Ever since 4th May 1896, the Daily Mail has been copied and cursed, praised and plagiarised. Eventually it has been ceremoniously incinerated and ceremonially honoured – with most recently as a Newspaper of the Year in 2012. Earliest campaigns included a drive to install telephones in police stations and another one to equip fire brigades with brand new rescue and emergency equipment. When back in 1909 motor taxis were depriving London's hansom cab drivers of a living, the Mail was there to raise cash in order to help their families and of course organize instruction in motor driving for even more than 500 drivers. From the very beginning, the Mail has helped setting the social, and technological agenda of the nation. In the very first issue it predicted, with the striking foresight, the place that the motor car, then much derided, would occupy within a few years. It seized on every possible advance in communication. Even more so, the direct telegraphic contact has been established between its London and New York offices within one year of launch. From 1905 the paper was printed in Paris, France. Articles were telegraphed all the way from London and typeset in identical style, so that the Daily Mail could soon be on Continental breakfast tables at the same time as in Britain – 10 hours earlier than all the other British papers, which naturally had to be shipped all the way across the Channel. Radio broadcasts of all major events were organized over even the greater distance and the latest equipment was eventually installed at the Mail's offices in order to enable it to be first with the news and pictures. Later on the tradition continued and in 1962 the Mail carried the very first news column transmitted through the brand new communications satellite Telstar.
