if you post your kids letters to Santa, to Royal Mail, they will send a free reply. It's a lovely card and great keepsake and very exciting for the kids. Royal Mail do say they'll try to reply to all letters, but as long as you post early enough, i do not know of anyone that hasn't received a reply, though i'm sure people on here will let me know they haven't received theirs! My kids always have. Get your letters sent end of Nov/beginning of Dec to ensure a reply.
