It's a lost cause I'm afraid - people said it last year, and the year before, and the year before that - but they still whizzed to the top of the charts over the festive period.
It's funny though - the piece you've quoted about The Darkness being predicted to be beaten by the Pop Idol winner. The Darkness were beaten that year, but by Gary Jules and that Mad World song.
I completely agree and considering in another thread about christmas songs I said I have been unimpressed with the majority of offerings at christmas this decade, I do place X Factor as a contributory cause of that. I wouldn't mind so much if they actually had a christmas themed song but quite honestly, the last few have just been typical ballads that could have been released at any time of the year.
