Christmas Day sees 3.57m hit online sales - 27/12/2007
Christmas Day saw 3.57 million eager shoppers go online to bag bargains, according to new figures.
Although many high street stores begin their sales today, the Mirror reported that consumers were more ready than ever before to grab the best discounts on the internet.
James Roper of the Interactive Media in Retail Group said internet purchases fill a gap that high street retailers cannot.
"The desire to shop doesn't go away and the web fills a niche when stores close.
"The peak spending time was likely to be after the Queen's speech, principally between 20:00 GMT and 22:00 GMT."
Stores starting their internet sales included Argos, Marks & Spencer, Comet and Dixons - providing lots of choice for those who wanted to grab a bargain.
Meanwhile, Kevin Hawkins, director general of the British Retail Consortium, said on Boxing Day that the next few days would see a lot of shops discounting unsold seasonal stock.
