US PS3 sales top 1.2m in holiday shopping season - 07/01/2008

Over 1.2 million people in North America have shelled out for the PlayStation3 in the holiday shopping window, it has been reported.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) reported a strong performance for the whole PlayStation brand during the holiday season with PS3 purchases joined with ongoing sales of the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable consoles.

Jack Tretton, president and chief executive officer of SCEA, said: "The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008."

"We are particularly pleased to have sold through 1.2 million units of PS3 during the holiday selling season."

He added that the success of the PS3 - released in the UK on March 23rd 2007 - has established the dominance of the Blu-ray disc system in the market for high definition films and games.

The PlayStation 3 is part of the seventh generation of consoles in gaming history and is competing against the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and Nintendo's Wii machines.
