Shoppers turn out in their thousands for Boxing Day sales - 28/12/2007

Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to shops across the UK on Boxing Day this year to pick up some excellent retail bargains.

Discounts on items ranging from furniture to clothing and electrical items were on offer at discounts of up to 75 per cent and bargain hunters took to high streets and shopping centres in search of a good deals.

Car parks at stores and shopping complexes were packed with vehicles and people queued outside shops on London's Oxford Street from 04:30 GMT in order to be the first in to look at the post-Christmas sales.

The Times reports that Selfridges welcomed 8,000 shoppers through its doors in the first hour of trade alone, while 27,500 people entered the Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham in the hour after opening.

British Retail Consortium boss Kevin Hawkins claims that many retailers will be offering big discounts to shoppers during the January 2008 sales and more discounting could follow during the first half of the year as increased competition for customers pushes prices down.

Analysts are now predicting that this year's sales surge will beat all previous Boxing Day records with deep price cuts on many items to lure in consumers. Figures from the Retail Footfall Index indicate that shopping traffic rose by a quarter this Boxing Day, compared with 2006.
