An unusual African fruit with six times the vitamin C of an orange is heading for British supermarkets.
The fruit of the Baobab tree, which also has twice as much calcium as milk, has been approved for import by the European Union.
Known locally as the upside-down tree, the Baobab is a common plant in Africa and its fruit is harvested from wild plants.
Billy Smith, marketing manager for Afriplex, told Food Ingredients First: "Baobab fruit pulp is a new exciting ingredient for the nutriceutical industry which can be used in various applications including health bars, smoothies and health drinks."
The fruit which looks like a marrow filled with blocks of feta cheese, is high in anti-oxidants and natural fibre and is an excellent source of iron.
Many foodstuffs are banned from import into the EU, including the Kava Kava plant - a relative of the humble pepper - and calabash chalk.
