Sales of baked beans have gone up by 11 per cent over the last two years, a new study by Mintel has found.
According to the research firm, Brits have spent around £295 million on beans during 2007, with 85 per cent buying a tin at least once.
Vivianne Ihekuweazu, senior consumer analyst at the firm, said the increasing popularity of healthy eating and cooking from scratch could have negatively affected sales of baked beans.
However, manufacturers have embraced these trends and introduced new varieties and more upmarket recipes, she said, including Cumberland sausage, fresh herb flavours and added Omega 3.
She added: "Baked beans are still a regular fixture at mealtimes across the UK."
In related news, Marks & Spencer is expected to confirm this week that it will sell brands such as Marmite and Heinz baked beans for the first time as part of new executive chairman Sir Stuart Rose's turnaround strategy for the retailer.
