Britain remains the world's second biggest gadget buyer despite the current downturn in the economy, according to new research.
Figures released by Euromonitor showed that Britons spent £24 million last year on new gadgets.
The figure is £57 million less than America, which spent £81 billion on gadgets.
Great Britain was ahead of both Germany and Russia, which spent £15 billion and £13 billion on hi-tech lifestyle devices respectively.
Britons also spent £34 billion on alcohol and tobacco in 2007.
New research carried out by youngpoll.com found that the average schoolboy carries £400 worth of gadgets including mp3 players, mobile phones and hand-held computer consoles with a selection of games.
Girls carry less than boys, and kit themselves out with an average of £345 worth of clothes, jewellery and gadgets.
The amount of equipment carried around by schoolchildren 25-years-ago was valued at £3.10, according to the Daily Mail.
