Those looking for special offers when booking a holiday may want to spare a thought for todays newlyweds who spend an average of £1,614 on their honeymoon.
The research from esure found that since the turn of the century Brits have forked out more than in the 1980s, when the average couple paid £547 for their post-wedding getaway.
However, three-quarters of those questioned said they felt under pressure for a honeymoon to be "the holiday of a lifetime".
In addition, nine in ten believe that this type of trip has become more extravagant and lavish than ever before.
"The honeymoon is seen as a much bigger deal, as it offers the chance to have a dream holiday before couples can truly settle down to married life," commented Mike Pickard, head of esure travel insurance.
According to online information site Wikipedia, the meaning of the word "honeymoon" has various meanings when translated into other languages.
In Spain it is known as la luna de miel (the moon of honey), while in Arabic is referred to as shahr el assal (honey month).
