Some £34.4 billion is spent every year by Brits on holidays abroad, new research has discovered.
With the popularity of online travel agents and budget airlines, it is now more convenient for many to make a last-minute booking or grab a bargain trip at any time of year.
Alliance & Leicester (A&L) Personal Loans revealed the results of a survey that found £34.4 billion was spent annually on holidays and £23.3 billion was shelled out while on the actual getaway.
The most money spent per visit was in Australia, where the average length of stay is 45 days and people pay £2,030 per person while there.
However, while long-haul destinations may appear more expensive, it was found that the highest amount spent per person per day was Iceland, at £118.
Richard Al-Dabbagh, manager of personal loans at A&L, said although costs for family holidays can be "substantial", they should be a time of enjoyment.
Would-be holidaymakers may find searching for special offers online could help them save money when jetting off for a break.
