Sainsbury's are selling thin-skinned cucumbers, reports the Daily Mail.
According to the newspaper, the fruit - known widely as a vegetable - has been cultivated for about 3,000 years in western Asia and was probably introduced to Europe by the Romans.
The variety does not have to be peeled and will therefore be perfect for cucumber sandwich lovers.
It is apparently crispier than the conventional cucumber and has a slightly sweeter flavour.
Sainsbury's spokesperson Carla Ashmore said: "The skin is thinner, making it perfect for quick and easy preparation of sandwiches and salads alike."
The fruit, dubbed a c-thru- cumber, is currently being sold in the supermarket in packs of two for £1.19. Normal cucumbers sell at around 75p each, claimed the newspaper.
According to the Food and Agricultural Organisation, China produced about 60 per cent of the global output of cucumbers and gherkins in 2005, followed by Turkey, Russia and Iran.
