News > Consumers can expect 'big discounts'

Retailers are doing everything they can to keep prices down and encourage consumers to spend, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) says.
According to the trade association, shoppers can expect big discounts, through price cuts and promotions such as savings vouchers and money off codes.
BRC spokesperson Richard Dodd says: "Retailers are discounting heavily so there are a whole range of very high profile price cuts and promotions playing along, both in the food and drink sector and across the non-foods sector.
"There are a lot of bargains out there to be had for customers who actually have money to spend."
He adds that retailers know customers are short of spare money and are trying to tempt them in to buying larger items they might not otherwise buy.
According to the latest Distributive Trades Survey from the Confederation of British Industry, sales volumes in July fell particularly sharply.
Nearly two-thirds (61 per cent) of respondents reported that sales in the first half of July were lower than a year ago, while 25 per cent said sales had increased.
