Booking a holiday online through a provider such as Expedia has a number of benefits, according to a researcher at Which? Holiday.
Kate Shipp of the independent consumer body suggested that online holiday booking sites are beneficial for consumers who are keen to compare prices on a number of vacation options at once.
In addition, she said that while travel agents sometimes provide a limited selection of holidays to choose from, online holiday planners often allow users to tailor their travels to suit their specific needs.
"And it's also about being able to compare things quickly on price and choice," she said, adding that booking a holiday online can be done "without having to leave your desk or your office".
A September 2007 survey released by Travelmole indicated that a special report investigating travel technology has predicted that the number of travel agents in the UK would fall from 5,000 to 2,000 in the next five years, which could be attributed in part to the growing popularity of online travel websites.
