Catalogue retailer Argos has claimed that sales of Singer and Brother sewing machines have soared by 50 per cent between 2006 and 2007, which could signify the comeback of DIY fashion, it has emerged.
The Telegraph reported that the popularity of sewing machines could also be due in part to an increased awareness of environmental and social issues, according to Argos, while a spokesman from high street retailer Woolworths stated "the death of the high street tailor" may be another reason for the resurgence of sewing.
"We think it's down to more home economics classes being taught in schools [and] the increasing popularity of fancy dress parties," said the spokesman.
Sewing machine sales at Woolworths have increased by 258 per cent between 2006 and 2007.
According to the Independent, the cheapest sewing machine available from Argos costs £69.99. Richard Webster, sewing machines buyer at the store, added that a sewing machine can offer a "modern take" on the make-and-do mindset of older generations.
