News > Deformed iPods are 'very rare'

Apple has issued a statement reassuring users that cases of iPod nano becoming hot enough to scorch paper and cause burns were extremely rare.
The company, which also makes the iPhone and iPhone 3G, said that faulty batteries in its early models were responsible for the "failure and deformation of the iPod nano".
But Apple highlighted that the fault occurred in less than 0.001 per cent of its first-generation mp3 players and that no one had been seriously hurt as a result of a melt-down.
Earlier this week, Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry issued a statement saying: "Users need to be careful about overheating of the machines."
"Our ministry told Apple to improve its technological development and probe the cause of the incidents," it added.
The ministry has notified Apple of 14 incidents two of which resulted in users receiving minor burns.
Apple sold nearly two million mp3 players in Japan in 2005-06.
