Following record sales of digital cameras in December, it is expected that 2008 will be a particularly strong year for digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras, according to a new report.
GfK Retail and Technology reported that in December 2007, a combined total of £142.1 million was spent on digital cameras in the UK.
This includes sales of 1.177 million digital compact cameras, representing an increase of 13.5 per cent compared to the previous year, as well as 54,300 digital SLR units, representing 22.7 per cent growth compared with December 2006.
According to the research firm, as the price of digital SLR cameras becomes more accessible, it is likely that more people will consider upgrading their camera in the coming year.
"This is a space to watch as 2008 unfolds with SLR being the focus for a lot of market activity with new launches and a further increase in new or upgrading users," the group claimed.
Last week, camera firm Sigma released a new version of digital SLR camera software for Apple's Mac computers entitled Sigma Photo Pro 3.1 for Mac.
