While parents have often complained that children spend too much time indoors playing computer games and not enough time exercising, new comments from an expert suggests that the Nintendo Wii could help motivate youngsters.
The console from Nintendo was released in the UK in December 2006 and uses aWii Remote utilising built-in accelerometers and infra-red detection for unique gameplay style.
Extolling the virtues of the system, a spokesperson for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said: "Physiotherapists support the idea of games consoles that encourage players to get up from the sofa and become more active.
"Playing virtual games like tennis or boxing will contribute to the 30 minutes of exercise you should aim for each day."
He added that it remains vital children engage in other activities and play outdoors, but noted that the Wii could help motivate young people who were not previously interested in sport.
