Some £8 billion is set to be spent at UK retailers during the eight-day period leading up to and including the Easter weekend.
New figures from the British Retail Consortium indicate that sales of Easter favourites such as hot cross buns could total £20 million in the six weeks leading up to Easter, while around £280 million is to be spent on Easter eggs in supermarkets this year - an increase of nine per cent when compared with 2007.
However, Mike Watson, senior manager of retailer services at data provider Neilsen, claimed that it is difficult to assess how strong Easter sales will be, as consumer spending has been squeezed due to the credit crunch and the holiday falls early this year.
Meanwhile, Fool.co.uk announced its top picks for Easter eggs this year, naming the Continental Egg with Viennese Truffles from Thorntons as the top favourite.
However, the Sao Tome Dark Chocolate Egg from Marks & Spencer was the "clear winner" in terms of value for money, the website claimed.
