The opening ceremony marked the first time a public event has been held to launch the annual two-week campaign, which is organised by the Fairtrade Foundation and aims to promote greater awareness of fair trade products
A number of events are being held in support of the scheme, including an portrait exhibit of Fairtrade coffee farmers at the Whitworth art gallery in Manchester, Fairtrade breakfasts and coffee mornings in Worcestershire and Milton Keynes, while schools in Essex and Hertforshire intend to offer Fairtrade products in their menus in the coming weeks.
In addition, a display of new fair trade books - Fighting the Banana Wars and the Fairtrade Everyday Cookbook - will take place at the Windsor bookshop in Penarth.
Meanwhile, to celebrate the event, Fool.co.uk reports that Tesco stores across the country will offer hot deals of between 20 and 25 per cent off of selected Fairtrade products.
Discounted products will include a number of fruit and snack items, as well as Columbian roast coffee and organic hot chocolate mix.
