Shoreditch may soon be receiving free wi-fi internet technology as part of a new BT initiative.
The company intends to distribute 1,000 La Fonera+ wi-fi routers around the area, Absolute Gadget reports.
People who have signed up to the service will plug the routers into their own internet connections and will leave the networks without password protection so local businesses and homes can share their access with their neighbours.
In doing this, hosts of the service will be able to use wi-fi hotspots at other locations around the world using the FON system.
The news provider reports that the routers will be in operation by October and it is possible to sign up to receive one straight away.
In response to the news, a spokeswoman confirmed to broadband genie that the product will launch nationwide in the autumn.
Sony has joined with FON in Japan to link its Playstation portables to the free wi-fi network.
