The government is to update age ratings on video games in light of new research.
Culture minister Margaret Hodge has announced a consultation on ways to improve video game classification following the release of a report by clinical psychologist Dr Tanya Byron.
While video games can provide opportunities for learning, development and enjoyment there is also a need to protect children from inappropriate material, her Safer Children in a Digital World study concluded.
The British Board of Film Classification and the Video Standards Council currently administer two parallel systems for rating video games in the UK.
Dr Byron suggested reforming the system so it is appropriate for the internet and carries a single set of recognisable symbols, voucher code holders may be interested to learn.
"The games market has simply outgrown the classification system, so today we are consulting on options that will make games classification useful and relevant again," Ms Hodge said.
According to a study by marketing group TNS, parents in the UK believe social gaming platforms, such as the Nintendo Wii, have a positive influence in their home and encourage children to do exercise.
