Britons think their internet connection is more important than exercise and religion, according to new research.
A YouGov survey into the perceived importance of the world-wide web found that almost half of Britons would feel "stressed or confused" if they were stopped from accessing their internet connection.
Some 87 per cent of web users polled by the research group claimed the internet was their sole source of information.
Commenting on the study, psychologist Dr David Lewis said: "The proliferation of broadband has meant for the first time in history we have entered a culture of instant answers - a galaxy of information is just a mouse click away and we have become addicted to the web."
He added that when people are unable to get online they suffer from 'discomgoogolation' which resulted in increasing brain activity and blood pressure.
In June 93.2 per cent of internet connections in the UK were broadband, according to the Office of National Statistics.
