Forget fancy gowns and bags, one of the biggest trends of this season has been knitwear - and fashion fans have been advised to get to the shops quick to get themselves a purl of a purchase before they sell out.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Hilary Alexander reports that designers took on knitwear in earnest this winter, with an emphasis on in-your-face overstatement rather than the traditional woolly jumper.
She made a special note of the bulky scarves and ponchos from Giles Deacon and the cloaks and collars from Jean Paul Gaultier, while Christopher Bailey designed knitted cashmere "warrior princess" jackets.
"Sadly, the designer knitwear bargains in the sales are few and far between," said Ms Alexander.
But she added that there are some bargains out there, and tipped the cardigan coat as a top purchase that will last through to the early summer.
Christopher Bailey joined Burberry in June 2001 and gave his first presentation at a Milan Palazzo before overseeing the opening of its flagship store on 57th Street New York.
