News > LED technology 'refined'

Advancing LED TV technology is on the cards for a number of television manufacturers, it has been reported.
LED technology, while nothing new, is reaching maturity and could provide viewers with higher quality blacks that are only possible on plasma screen televisions, reports HDTV.
A type of LCD TV, LED technology uses multiple backlights, as opposed to the traditional single backlight system, allowing parts of the screen to be turned off when they are not being used, according to the website.
"The advantage of this approach is that individual LED segments can be turned on or off for improved screen performance and ultimately better black levels," HDTV said.
Several manufacturers are working on RGB LED lighting, according to the technology news provider, which will offer televisions with colour dimming instead of black and white dimming.
In related news, cnet.com reports that Sony's KDL-52XBR6 LCD TV has the "crispest" blacks of any non-LED television.
