Sales of Diablo Chilli from Marks & Spencer doubled in the run-up to Valentine's Day, the Daily Mirror reported today.
The newspaper claimed that sweethearts may have been turning up the heat in the kitchen earlier this month, as a number of spicy food products have proved popular in February.
In addition, Marks & Spencer's Korma Paste and Chicken Tikka Masala Paste increased by 120 per cent.
A spokesman from the store told the newspaper that these figures may suggest that "staying in is the new going out" for UK couples.
Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer is currently advertising a number of gift suggestions for Mother's Day, including nightwear, slippers, bouquets of flowers, food and wine baskets, beauty products and jewellery.
Consumers need to place their orders for flowers by 17:00 GMT on Thursday for gifts to arrive in time for March 2nd.
In addition, orders made through the Marks & Spencer website totalling more than £30 may be eligible for free delivery.
