Many Brits are expected to take a European holiday over Easter this year, as the holiday falls earlier than usual, it has emerged.
According to new figures released by Marks & Spencer Money, UK residents have spent around £18 billion in euros abroad - the highest number since the euro coins and notes were launched in 2002.
Fraser Millar, manager of travel money at Marks & Spencer, claimed the euro is the UK's "favourite form of holiday cash" and accounts for around 58 per cent of all currency sales made in the UK.
"With the recent wintry weather at home and an early start on the spring/summer season, 2008 could be another record year for the euro," he added.
Countries currently using the euro currency include Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, Greece and Austria, among others.
Euro notes come in denominations of five, ten, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 and differ in colour and size.
