Microsoft has confirmed the latest version of its operating system will be called Windows 7.
The firm has decided against giving the new software an "aspirational" name as its aspirations lie with its current graphic user interface-led operating system Windows Vista.
Writing for the software giant's blog, corporate vice-president Mike Nash said it is the "seventh release of Windows, so therefore Windows 7 just makes sense".
However commentators have pointed out that the latest version of windows will not be the seventh.
The company has released seven versions already; Windows, Windows 2, Windows 3.0, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.
In related news, Bill Gates is no longer America's richest man after losing $2.5 billion (£1.25 billion) off his $55 billion fortune, reports the Register.
He has been replaced by Warren Buffett, who the website estimates is worth $58 billion.
