Microsoft and Nintendo are set to boost the storage capacity of their flagship consoles, according to the Register.
Nintendo are "working on a solution" to the 512mb storage limit of their current flash-card offering and a report by Trusted Reviews suggests Microsoft will unveil a 60GB version of its Xbox 360 at next month's E3 festival.
The move comes as competition between Microsoft and Playstation heats up, with the PS3 outselling the Xbox 360 in Europe for the first time, according to a study by VGChartz.
Nintendo's director of marketing Laurent Fischer was forced to issue an apology this week after Edge magazine reported he had said "only geeks and otaku" were worried about the memory limitations of the Wii.
Mr Fischer said he used the term as a joke and did not intend to apply it to Nintendo customers.
William Gibson popularised the word "otaku" in his 1996 novel Idoru, in which he defined it as a 'pathological-techno-fetishist-with-social-deficit'.
