Shopping psychologists have been drafted in to help with a £4 million redesign of a duty-free airport shop.
The new Biza store, which replaces Newcastle's Alpha Airport, took 12 months to re-fit and managing director of Alpha Retail UK Reg Curtis is confident it will bring high street glamour to the duty-free airport shopping, reports the Journal.
Biza covers 10,000 square feet and employs 62 people – and Mr Curtis is already talking of expansion as the business grows.
He told the Journal: "People will spend on luxury products before going on holiday.
"We want to get hold of that mindset and tempt and excite shoppers."
He added: "The credit crunch has to concern us but we've seen no sign whatsoever of it in airports."
In related news, Australian airline Quantas has reneged on its pledge to stop selling duty-free cigarettes on its flights after a former executive at British American Tobacco joined Quantas' board, according to ABC News.
