A collaboration between Apple and Nike will soon see the popular Nike + iPod device expanded to function directly with gym equipment such as treadmills, it has emerged.
Nike + technology currently works with iPod players such as the iPod nano to allow runners to track their workouts using their media player.
According to Trevor Edwards, vice-president of global brand and category management at the sporting equipment firm, the new Nike + development will "revolutionise the gym cardio experience".
Users will soon be able to plug their iPod into cardio equipment at participating gyms - including Virgin Active health clubs - where they can track their workout and upload their progress to their account at the Nike + website.
Greg Joswiak, vice-president of worldwide product marketing for iPod with Apple, claimed the iPod has become "an essential part of millions of people's workouts".
Recently, Apple announced a new 2GB version of the iPod shuffle music player, while the price of the original 1GB model has been reduced.
