Mobile phone company O2 started taking pre-orders for Apple's new iPhone today, but the website crashed minutes after the phones went on sale.
Existing customers wanting to upgrade from their old handset were told by text message that they could register for a new handset this morning.
But users were presented with an error message after filling out forms on O2's site apologising for the inconvenience and asking them to try again.
O2's website now has a message saying: "Due to huge demand for the iPhone 3G, it's currently out of sock online.
"Come back on July 10th for more information."
According to the Telegraph, Carphone Warehouse's ordering system has also crashed after a technical glitch, with the website informing customers that all models of the new iPhone are out of stock.
Carphone Warehouse told the paper that orders for the 3G version of the iPhone are ten times higher than for the original.
