Online retail sales in January 2008 were 75 per cent higher than they were last year, new research has revealed.
As reported by NMA.co.uk, industry body IMRG claimed that the jump in online shopping was due in part to the hot deals offered by post-Christmas sales.
The average person in the UK spent around £74 each online in the month of January, with total online sales reaching £4.5 billion - an increase from £2.6 billion in January 2007.
"Although we've seen growth over the last year and we anticipated growth in January, we weren't expecting that level", said David Smith, head of operations at IMRG.
He speculated that a number of factors likely contributed to the growth in consumer spending, including greater confidence in shopping online and a higher number of shoppers.
Sales of electrical items experienced a year-on-year growth of 38 per cent, while the clothing purchases increased by 32 per cent compared with last year's figures.
Today the Sydney Morning Herald reported that online shopping is also booming in Australia, with purchases made on eBay accounting for every five out of six purchases made on the internet in the country.
