Photovoltaic tie unveiled

A new solar powered tie has been unveiled by American researchers as the quest for alternative energy sources for charging mobile phones and mp3 players continues.

Iowa State University researchers, who have been looking for a suitable use for their photovoltaic fabrics, have created the world's first solar-powered necktie, which also sports a hidden pouch for storing your mobile phone in while it is being charged.

A spokesperson for the team which came up with the design said that the inclusion of solar panels on the green neck accessory made it difficult to tie.

They said that during a typical tying, the wearer creates a small loop which the rest of the tie must pass through but "at this step in the process, the physical width of the solar panel forces the user to enlarge their tie loop to allow the solar panel to pass through".

Other memorable solar powered gadgets include the Helius solar powered backpack and the Power Purse.
