News > Quad-core replacement unveiled by Intel

Intel has increased the amount of processing power offered in its high-end chips with the latest addition to its Xeon range.
Thought to be a future replacement for its quad-core range, the Xeon X7460, which will be available in September, boasts an increased amount of onboard cache and six-cores.
Intel's senior vice-president Pat Gelsinger said the new Xeon processor, which is aimed at server systems and uses the company's patented 45-nanometre Penryn technology, will boost performance significantly.
He said: "The big cache and six cores will give customers a nice bump in performance."
"We're quite excited about it," he added.
Rival chip manufacturer AMD is behind in the processing power stakes having only released its range of quad-core processors this July, according to industry experts.
But Jim McGregor, an analyst at In-Stat, said that although AMD is lagging behind Intel, the amount of software available that supports quad-core processing is limited and multi-core chips may not always prove value for money.
