Samsung has unveiled plans for a new compact camera with interchangeable lenses.
Based on the firm's CMOS APS-C sensor, the company said the new device would have a lens mount allowing users to change the lens but that it would be easier to operate than a digital SLR device.
Executive vice-president of Samsung Techwin Byung Woo Lee said: "Our research has shown us that there is a big demand for a new type of camera product."
"One that has the sophistication and interchangeable lenses of a digital SLR, but is smaller and more user-friendly," he added.
Mr Lee claimed the device would be able to connect to televisions and PCs, would include a high quality LCD screen and electronic viewfinder.
Samsung is also set to release an eight-megapixel camera phone.
According to Samsung's vice-president Mark Mitchinson, the new i8510 mobile phone is a technological milestone and he claims the new device is a credible alternative to the digital camera, reports the Telegraph.
