News > Satnav makes driving less stressful

Drivers with a satnav in their car feel less stressed, more relaxed and safer, according to a new study.
Research by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and TNO, showed that nearly one in four drivers feel less stressed behind the wheel of their car with a satnav system on their dashboard.
70 per cent said a portable navigation device made them feel calmer and 66 per cent felt positively more relaxed.
More than half of the 1,036 people surveyed said that a satnav made it easier to keep their attention on the road.
Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom, one of the world's leading satnav manufacturers, said: "TomTom has always believed that our products provide drivers with added confidence on the road."
But satnav systems don't always reduce stress, according to the BBC.
In 2006 drivers going through Crackpot in North Yorkshire were being directed up a gravel path on the edge of a 100ft cliff by their mild-mannered map readers, the news site said.
And two local farmers were having to pull one car a week out of the gravel with their tractor.
