Shopping makes you slimmer

Women hunting for bargains on the high street burn off an average of 12,000 calories a year, according to new research by a shopping centre in Warrington.

More than two-thirds of the 2,000 women surveyed by the Golden Square shopping centre claimed that an energetic shopping spree can have the same effect as going to the gym.

According to the new research, women walk an average of more than two miles every time they go shopping, clocking up 121 miles every year.

Ian Cox, marketing manager of Golden Square shopping centre, said: "Not only is shopping fun but there is now proof that it really is good for you."

"Most women love shopping and you can now get fit and shed the pounds while doing something you really enjoy," he added.

Surprisingly men get less benefit from shopping and burn off an average of just 8,928 calories every year.
