More than half (52 per cent) of families will not be going on a two-week holiday this year, with more regular shorter breaks proving increasingly popular, according to the latest research.
Holiday Inn surveyed 5,000 people and found that the average family now takes four shorter breaks each year, relying on long weekends to diffuse the stress of working rather than a two-week summer break.
Almost a quarter (24 per cent) put this change down to cost, suggesting they cannot afford to pay for holidays that are longer than a few days, while one in five cannot take the time off work to go away for a longer period.
"Gone are the bad old days when people would save all year for their annual two-week summer holiday at the busiest and most expensive period - we're much too savvy nowadays," said Chris Hale, spokesman for Holiday Inn.
Almost three-quarters (72 per cent) suggested that they consider shorter breaks as a more affordable way of treating their family.
Earlier this month, Crowne Plaza Hotels revealed a survey of business traveller shad shown that having the space to think about loved ones while travelling can "promote domestic bliss".
