News > Supermarket price war on the horizon

Asda is the latest supermarket chain to cut prices on many of its most popular items as supermarkets compete for customers.
The retailer has cut the price of 12 of its most commonly purchased items, including potatoes, sausages and eggs to 50p.
Starting this morning and lasting until Sunday, bargain code hunters will be able to fill a shopping basket at Asda for £6.
The move comes after sales at discount food retailers Aldi and Lidl jumped by 21 and 13 per cent respectively as shoppers try to fight the credit crunch by capping spending.
Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Tesco have all cut the cost of popular food items in a bid to win back customers.
Jonathan Pritchard, supermarket analyst at City firm Oriel Securities, told the Telegraph: "This isn't just a marketing ploy. This is different; this is a real price war."
Asda has cut the price of 10,000 products since the price war began.
