News > Tesco introduces the lemon melon
Published: 29/07/2008 | Categories: 'Food and Drink'

A variety of melon that tastes like a lemon is to go on sale at Tesco stores across the country.
Shopping voucher holders may be tempted by the fruit, which is a cross between the sour Indian White melon and the Wild Japanese melon.
The lemon melon, as the fruit has been named, contains a 700 to 800 milligram level of citric acid per 100 grams - almost twice that of a standard melon.
Paul Cunningham, a melon buyer for Tesco, said: "We believe that they come become the culinary hit of the summer once people have tasted them.
"The lemon melon causes a great reaction when people first try them because the last thing you expect from a smooth textured melon is a tangy aftertaste."
According to thinkspain.com, the lemon melon, which is priced at £1.99, was grown in Murcia.
Independent retail analyst TNS values the UK melon market at £125 million a year.
