Buying a more expensive purchase such as a laptop might be nerve-wracking for some who are not up-to-scratch on technical gadgets.
However, some simple tips could make the purchasing experience much easier and also help to give peace of mind when shelling out hundreds of pounds.
Terrie Chilvers of Computing Which? magazine said one of the main things to consider is what purpose the laptop will be used for and whether its use warrants the need for a widescreen display.
In addition, choosing a model with at least one gigabyte of random access memory is advised, although the more memory a computer has, "the better it will run", Ms Chilvers explained.
In terms of hard disk space, 80 gigabytes is a good starting point, although storing videos and music may necessitate more.
And a processor that is "up to the job" is also essential, Ms Chilvers added. A central processing unit of about 1.6 gigahertz would suit the average user, although a dual core processor is advisable.
Searching online for a suitable laptop could produce less costly results and potentially enable shoppers to take advantage of discount vouchers and money off codes.
