A satellite navigation system that helps drivers avoid traffic jams by providing them with information on the road ahead has been developed, researchers have revealed.
The Congestion Avoidance Dynamic Routing Engine (Cadre), which could be on sale within 18 months, would see drivers receive information on road conditions from other motorists and feed data to a satellite, the Telegraph reports.
According to the government-backed team of researchers, subscribers will be able to receive live information while on the road via a mobile internet GPRS system to a screen, such as a mobile phone or access information on how long a journey will take from a website.
Organisations behind the Cadre project include Portsmouth University, Hampshire County Council and Transport Research Laboratory.
"The system will be able to tell you the best time to leave home," said Patrick Beullens, a member of Portsmouth University's mathematics department.
"We can also help you make your journey as short as possible by minimizing delays, he added.
The system, which has been tested on more than 2,100 journeys around Hampshire, was sponsored by the South East of England Development Agency, as part of the government's Innovation Platform in Intelligent Transport Systems, Cellular News reports.
