High-definition televisions could soon supersede the current 1080p resolution, according to Toshiba.
The electronics firm announced at the IFA 2008 technology fare in Berlin it was ready to start producing HD-TVs with far higher resolutions.
Executive vice president of Toshiba Europe Alan Johnson said the company was ready to offer 4,000 x 2,000 and 8,000 x 4,000 pixel displays as soon as consumer demand was sufficient.
Mr Johnson also said while Sony's Blu-ray technology was successful it was already being surpassed by developments in solid-state storage, which were slowly making optical storage obsolete.
He pointed to the fact that a single 32GB flash memory card the type of memory often used in digital cameras could be used to store up to six HD films.
Despite Toshiba's prophecy, Panasonic announced it will start selling Blu-ray DVD recorders in Europe.
Its new DVD burners will be unleashed on the French first as they already have access to several free HD broadcasts.
