iPhone 3G packaged in potato

The latest 3G iPhone will be available in the UK on July 11th and will be packaged in an environmentally-friendly potato starch tray.

Apple has placed an order with a Dutch company that produces PaperFoam packaging, which is used for holding Motorola phones, according to the Register.

The packaging is 100 per cent recyclable with paper and has significantly less CO2 emissions than equivalent plastic packaging.

Hans Arentsen told the tech-news provider that Apple had placed an order for "millions of PaperFoam packages" for its new iPhone.

The company, which was founded in 1998, first offered potato starch CD and DVD cases before making custom designed potato packaging for mobile phones, computer components and mp3 players.

Apple's iPhone 3G will go on sale July 11th in the UK, and will be available in an 8GB and 16GB version.

The new phone will come in either in black or white and will run for five or six hours while browsing the web, according to PC World.
