More information about South Lakes Wild Animal Park

The park was generally an idea mostly created and developed solely by David Gill. During the construction back in 1993-1994, David was an animal nutritionist with no connections to zoo's whatsoever, but only a desire to see education and conservation that would bring reality of a close, wild experience into the public awareness in order to assist worldwide conservation issues. David built the park with his own bare hands and to this day he still designs and builds all the facilities around the zoo, of course now with the help of the large staff.

Brief timeline of park

  • 1993: The construction started
  • 1994: On 28th May 1994 the park opened to the public, but it was only a fraction of the experience it is today. Still, it held the visitors in wonder at the freedom that the animals were given in a completely natural environment. Guanacos, Ducks, Raccoons, Wallabies, Coatis, Pheasants, Parrots, and Antelopes held the stage.
  • 1995: Visitors (around 55,000 of them) entered the park and were presented with the Antelope and Lemur facilities with lemurs becoming a feature of this unique park.
  • 1996: Some 101,000 of visitors witnessed the arrival of the first Tiger ever to arrive at South Lakes, Toba. This Sumatran Tiger took up residence on 1st April. Then in December followed two Amur Tigers, Nina and Egor arrived in their brand new home. Fund raising already started for Tiger conservation in the wild and it they are proud to say that it was truly the "year of the tiger" at South Lakes Wild Animal Park.
  • 2005: The arrival of Mandrills, Penguins and Pygmy Hippos, plus the all new "Giraffe Walk", enabling all visitors to really get close on to the Giraffes, Baboons and Rhinos in their summer area. A Cheetah walk and a new picnic area was also completed in order to make major improvements. Visitor numbers were around 30,000 up on 2004.
