I collaborated with Dr. Alan Kwan, who has a PhD in Computational Genomics from Washington University, to hypothesize what we may look like in the future. The following is written by him…

While the future remains unknowable (for now), Nickolay Lamm produced one set of possible changes to the human face in one possible timeline where, 100,000 years in the future, through zygotic genome engineering technology, our future selves control human biology and human evolution the way we control electrons today. In this future, humankind has wrested control of the human form from natural evolution and are able to bend human biology to human needs. This future scenario and these figures are envisioned by Dr. Alan Kwan, PhD Computational Genomics from Washington University.

What we look like today.

As our understanding of the universe increases, I predict that the human head will trend larger to accommodate a larger brain. But instead of some orthogonal evolutionary path that ends up with the 210th century human a la Futurama’s Morbo the anchor-alien, the rule of viable human biology will still apply and so the entire head will trend larger, though with a bias for a greater cranium growth than facial growth; the human 20,000 years from now would look to us like someone today except we would notice the forehead is subtly too large.

By this point, communications lenses will have replaced devices such as Google Glass.

While evolution in space is only beginning to be explored today, I would hazard a guess that millennia of human space colonization of Earth-orbit and other solar system space colonies will also select for…

1. Larger eyes in response to the dimmer environment of colonies further from the Sun than Earth.

2. More pigmented skin to alleviate the damaging impact of much more harmful UV radiation outside of the Earth’s protective ozone.

3. Thicker eyelids or a more pronounced superciliary arch to alleviate the effects low or no gravity that disrupt and disorient the eyesight of today’s astronauts on the ISS.

By this point in time, communications lenses (commlens) in contacts and miniature bone-conduction devices implanted above the ear will work in tandem. Bone-conduction devices, with embedded nanochips, will communicate with some external device for communications and entertainment.

This human face will be heavily biased towards features that humans find fundamentally appealing: strong, regal lines, straight nose, intense eyes, and placement of facial features that adhere to the golden ratio and left/right perfect symmetry. Functional bias will be incorporated into the vanity driven constraints above. Eyes would seem unnervingly large to us and have “eye shine” from the tapetum lucidum. Sideways blink of the reintroduced plica semilunaris to further protect from cosmic ray effects would be particularly startling.

To set things off I’ve submitted my entry above. I’m a huge fan of Aztec prints – so it was love at first site for me and this figure hugging midi skirt from New Look. Centering the overall look round the skirt, I styled a look for a summer evening out with friends. For me, the best thing about this skirt (aside from its purse friendly price) is its versatility, pair with a crisp white shirt and you’ll be set for a head turning office look. The statement necklace and denim jacket are bang on trend for this season and can be used to update almost any summer ensemble. Better still this entire look comes in at a thrifty £97.58!

Get Creative…

This is your chance to show off the very best of your frugal styling skills. We’ll be looking for entries to be as creative as possible. So whether you’re drawing inspiration from a specific trend like monochrome or oriental prints, or building your dream festival outfit – feel free to let your sartorial imagination run free. Just make sure you stick to the £100 limit!

After we’ve selected our Top 5 favourite entries we will be showcasing these amazing looks on our blog and across our social channels. We’re hoping to inspire as many people as possible to think frugal with their summer shopping and this is your chance to get involved.

We will start collecting entries on the 3rd June 2013. We will announce our favourite 5 and Top 3 cash prize winners on 8th July.

In their newest collection for Evans, ’Swan SS13 Holiday’, design duo Clements Ribeiro have teamed up with a fabulous ensemble of curvy fashion bloggers for a kitsch and quirky summer line set to bring plus size style into the fashion foreground. Inspired both by the bloggers themselves and the designer’s travels to New York, this uber trendy capsule collection features quirky graphic prints and bold silhouettes not customarily seen among plus size designs.

In promoting the collection, Clements Ribeiro have joined forces with plus size blogosphere glitterati – Georgina Hornes, Bethany Rutter and Callie Thrope, accompanied by their US counterparts Marie Denee and Nicolette Mason – in a playful, retro inspired campaign emulating the spirit of the collection itself.

Commenting on the collection, Inacio Ribeiro said: ‘After three collections in which we tried to create smart capsule wardrobes, including some serious eveningwear, we decided to come in with a surprise turn by creating a holiday range that is playful and easy. The shapes are very casual and straightforward, and the prints are full of wit. It is infused with the urban energy the bloggers inspired us with, but it is also ready for a week of fun in Rio.’ Key pieces include sporty day wear staples and head turning animal motifs. For an instant sizzling holiday style update, check out of pick of very best of the collection.

Have you ever wondered how much it would cost to turn your car into one that doesn’t look out of place in the Fast and Furious franchise?

$70,845 (£46,969)

To create this infographic we consulted with John from Epic Tuning, who gave us a list of items that would be included in a typical Fast and Furious like tuner car. This infographic isn’t meant to be an exact science because some of the items may not fit all cars. Furthermore, for each part, there is typically a large price range. So, the price of each part (and the list itself) was made to give people a general idea of what’s included in a Fast and Furious tuner car and not something to be followed exactly.

According to John “A tuner car can be any car to which you make performance or aesthetic improvements so that it becomes your own statement, but it usually refers to relatively inexpensive import or domestic cars that are already fun, good handling, and quick, but have potential to be REALLY fun and fast with some good performance tweaking. With the right knowledge (and enough money) a tuner car can be built to keep up with, or be even faster than some super expensive exotics for a tenth of their prices.”

As the price of the average weekly shop continues to rise, it seems ironic just how determined supermarkets are at showing us they’re the cheapest. From price promises to price matching, is it any wonder we’re itching to run off into the arms of the humble independent grocer?

But although we’d love to leave everyone to fight it out between themselves, most people are far too caught up in price wars of their own to be able to dismiss the supermarket giant. If your grocery bill is getting bigger as the weeks go by, it might be high time to demonstrate a bit of supermarket shopping savvy. From planning and preparation to good old fashioned self-control, here are our top tips for slashing your weekly shop!

Separate the Shopping Budget

If you’re used to paying for your shopping with a debit card, it can be easy to lose sight of how much you’re spending. An alternative tactic is to decide on a shopping budget and stick to it no matter what. Even better, draw it out in cash and keep it aside – that way if you manage to come under budget some weeks, you’ll be able to get into a cycle of topping it up instead of drawing out the same amount each time. If you’re really sad, you can even start a competition with yourself to try and beat how much you save every week. Sorry, not sad, we meant awesome…

Tell BOGOF to Bog Off!

Although it might seem like supermarket shelves are filled with bargain offers, it’s not always the case. More often than not, 3 for 2 and BOGOF deals are actually used as a rather sneaky ploy to get you to spend money on things you don’t need. We’re all guilty of falling for it – chucking in an extra packet of tomatoes because they’re on offer – but by the time you actually come to eat said tomatoes: they’ve gone soggy! You’ve lost, the supermarket’s won, and the tomatoes have suffered a fate worse than anyone. The solution? Steer clear of unnecessary bulk buys, and only go for them when they are guaranteed to last.

Shop Online

If you’ve yet to join the online shopping brigade, frankly you’ve been missing out. You might have to pay for delivery, but if you drive to the supermarket then it’ll only be the price you usually shell out in petrol. But best of all, you’ll be able to avoid the temptation those pesky aisles magically create; simply choose exactly what you need without the danger of impulse buys or getting stuck behind incredibly slow trolley drivers! You can also do it from the comfort of your own sofa, in your pyjamas, whilst watching Mad Men. (But only if you want to, of course)

Downgrade

If you’re cupboards are filled with branded or ‘finest’ produce, why not try downgrading to supermarket own or even value brands? You might want to stick with the luxury items for things like bread or meat – but when it comes to stuff like table sauces, canned goods, cereal and toiletries, scaling down won’t necessarily mean a massive step down in quality. Try slipping in a few test items to your kids or partner, if they don’t notice the difference, you can enjoy smugly telling them about your money saving victory.

Plan Ahead

This is one tip which is so unbelievably difficult to get around to doing, but the one which reaps the most moolah. It’s pretty damn simple: sit down and write out the meals you’ll eat throughout the entirety of the week and the specific ingredients you’ll need. Not surprisingly you’ll find that instead of overestimating the amount, you will only buy the items you’re guaranteed to use! On a side note, this tip is also pretty fantastic if you’re an indecisive sort or in fact on any kind of diet – instead of sticking your head in the fridge and resorting to a takeaway, you’ll be able to come home and know exactly what you’re having for dinner. Your mum would be so proud.

We don’t know about you, but in recent months we’ve become e-book converts. While there’s nothing better sitting in your favourite armchair, sipping on a hot cuppa and flicking through an old-fashioned book, when it comes to portability and downright simplicity, you can’t beat an E-Reader.

To the uninitiated, E-Readers allow you to store thousands of books onto a single electronic device that replicates the look, feel and readability of actual paper. Thanks to special ‘E-ink’ technology, E-readers offer a more comfortable reading experience than PCs and tablets, too – so you’ll never have to worry about developing eye strain. Thanks to their diminutive proportions, E-Readers can even be carried around in your bag or pocket – so it’s easy to flip between books during the morning commute.

In recent years, tablet PCs have made a modest dent into the E-Reader market – particularly the Apple iPad and Kindle Fire HD. Of course, as you’ll no doubt have witnessed on buses, trains and planes, this is very much a two horse race between the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook.

Look for a budget E-Reader, but not sure which one to go for? Check out our handy guide below…

Which has the better display?

While newer models, including the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite and Nook GlowLight, add back-lit screens to the party, the original E-Readers are more than up to the job. Both the Amazon Kindle (£69) and Nook Simple Touch (£29) feature 6″ E-Ink Pearl displays, and both are crisp and readable even in dim lighting conditions. It’s the Nook’s touchscreen that impresses us the most, though. Browsing through your virtual library can be frustrating on the Kindle’s 4-directional pad, but it’s an absolute doddle on the Nook.

Winner: Nook Simple Touch

Which has better battery life?

There’s nothing worse than switching on a device, only to discover that it’s run out of juice. Fortunately, both the Amazon Kindle and Nook boast spectacular longevity in the battery department. While the Kindle can last an entire month without a charge, it’s the Nook that truly blows us away, with a whopping battery life of two months.

Winner: Nook Simple Touch

Which has the best storage?

Both the Amazon Kindle and the Nook feature an internal memory of 2GB. While that might not sound like a lot, particularly if you’re used to computers and iPods with hundreds of gigabytes to play with, you won’t be short of space on an E-Reader. Both devices can store over 1000 books, with the Kindle claiming to hold around 1400 at full capacity. Amazon also offers free cloud storage for its content on Kindle, while the Nook’s storage can be increased with an SD card.

Winner: Draw

Who has the Better E-bookstore?

Given the similarities between the hardware, you’ll be happy to hear both Kindle and Nook’s E-Bookstores are evenly matched too. Both claim more than one million books to download, most priced under £9.99, as well as a huge collection of newspapers and magazines. Amazon’s Kindle Exclusives and Lending Library are inspired, but there’s very little difference between the offerings, and most bestsellers and indie books are present and available for download.

Winner: Amazon

Who has the best app?

If you’re planning to read your content on another device, such as a smartphone or tablet, you’ll want an app that lets you read with minimal fuss. Both E-Readers have specially designed apps for iPhone and Android smartphones – as well as desktops, iPad, Android and Windows 8 tablets. While both are highly capable, allowing you to dip into your favourite book right where you left off. It’s Amazon’s app – which allows you to look up definitions – that truly wins us over.

Winner: Kindle

Verdict

If you’re looking for a cheap, reliable E-Reader, both the Kindle and Nook are ideal. Given the similarities between each device, it’s really a matter of personal choice. Priced at just £29, the Nook is perhaps better suited to American consumers who are used to buying books from Barnes & Noble. Still, with its impressive price and large array of books, it comes highly recommended. However, if you want the convenience of buying with Amazon (along with your regular shopping), we’d certainly recommend the Kindle. Although more expensive at £69, it’s a great entry-level device, and is sure to keep you entertained.

Voucher codes and discounts are now driving a fifth of all restaurant spending, valued at approximately £1.3bn per year, according to industry research. A new weekly campaign inspired by these figures by a leading discount site has led to some restaurants seeing 30,000 more visits.

Given the fact that almost half, 47%, of consumers use voucher codes to search for restaurant discounts according to an independent report, the UK’s leading discount code website has launched Foody Friday, an ongoing campaign and mobile application restaurant booking facility dedicated to serving consumer demand and increasing footfall for UK restaurants.

According to research by foodservice market trends service Horizons, 22% of consumers will choose a restaurant based solely on the value of an available offer.

The UK’s leading discount code website www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, used by millions each month, noticed a year-on-year increase in site users searching for and taking advantage of online and printable restaurant vouchers; prompting wider industry analysis and commissioned independent research by market researchers Colman/Parkes to investigate the trend.

According to the research, 9.5 million people – or one in three adults with access to the internet – search for a restaurant voucher at least once a year. Those using voucher codes to save money when eating out account for 577,000 tables a week, or a fifth of all restaurant tables served. Based on industry average spend data, these consumers account for a fifth of all restaurant spending, or approximately £1.3bn every year.

Presented with such a large opportunity to reach discount-savvy users keen on eating out for the right price, MyVoucherCodes introduced Foody Friday, a cross channel marketing campaign to drive visits and restaurant bookings. Launched in late January 2013, the email, social media and mobile application campaign was shared with millions of voucher code users, targeted subscribers, followers and mobile app users with the top restaurant deals of the day.

Having already added restaurant booking functionality to its MyVoucherCodes mobile application in late 2012, the team hope this demonstrates its commitment to innovating and promotion to both consumers and the restaurant industry.

Since the email campaign went live, the Foody Friday messages have driven approximately 350,000 extra visits to the site, with popular restaurants seeing upwards of 30,000 additional views each Friday as a result.

The mobile restaurant booking solution will be undergoing improvement to ensure users’ table bookings at restaurants offering popular discounts.

Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes, had the following to say:

“Recession or no recession, Brits love their food and will take advantage of a great offer if presented with one, giving the voucher code industry – and us as the most popular site in the sector – a huge opportunity. As such, we felt it important to make a commitment to our restaurant partners as well as our moneysaving community, highlighting the best deals and giving consumers an easy way to take advantage of them.

“Given many of our popular restaurant partners are each seeing more than 30,000 unique visits per weekly push via email and social media, Foody Friday is clearly paying dividends for all involved and we’ll be looking at ways to innovate in a bid to ensure this continues. Our restaurant booking functionality has served us well so far, but it can and will continue to improve.”

If you haven’t tucked into a juicy, cheesy, belt-busting burger of late: you just haven’t been living my friend. In the biggest food trend to hit our shores for a while, it seems we’re all going gaga for Americana – Sunday roasts and apple crumble are out, smoked barbecue and sundaes are well and truly in.

Why the sudden popularity? Well it’s understandable when you think about it. With money and convenience being two of the biggest factors in what we choose to eat, restaurateurs have cottoned on to the low running costs and mass appeal of the decent diner.

Furthermore, harking back to the nostalgic image of the fifties American drive-through, this type of fare evokes a little more glitz and otherworldly glamour than your average British dinner. If you remember that feeling of excitement at being treated to a Maccy D’s as a child, visiting anyone of the following restaurants is likely to be just like that: but bigger and so much better….

You don’t have to cross the Atlantic to get your American foodie fix; here’s a selection of the best gourmet diners found right here in the UK…

Ed’s Easy Diner

With its old school jukebox and retro décor, Ed’s Easy Diner is one of those restaurants which aims to deliver an all-round experience a well as good food. The great news is: they don’t disappoint on either! Particularly adept at desserts and shakes, why not save yourself the extra calories and indulge in an order solely from the sweet menu? Park yourself in a red and white booth and enjoy.

Bodean’s

Forget ‘fast food’, Bodean’s are passionate about cooking theirs as slowly as possible. With inspiration and recipes taken directly from the owner’s home town of Kansas City, it’s all about meat smoked for hours on end until perfectly succulent and woody to taste. If you’ve never had ribs or pulled pork before, this is the place to try it.

Byron

All about the humble hamburger, Byron is passionate about the beautiful simplicity of the perfect patty and bun. There’s nothing fancy or fussy about the menu, the only toppings are based around the basics like cheese, onions and tomato, but frankly that’s what makes it so good. If you’re after a simple and satisfying classic, you won’t be able to beat a Byron.

The Diner

Now with multiple locations in London, The Diner does exactly what it says on the tin. The menu is American through and through – from breakfast staples like blueberry pancakes to main crowd pleasers like hot dogs, chilli cheese fries and malt shakes – it’s certainly not the place to go if you’re on any kind of diet. In fact, we’d put our money on you feeling like you won’t need to eat for a week afterwards!

GBK

One of the first chains to bring affordable and decent American dining to the UK, GBK is still going strong with its line of delicious gourmet meals. Well known for putting a spin on a classic, we’d recommend going out of your comfort zone and trying one of their unusual combos. Whether you decide on the horseradish topped Wellington or the fruity Kiwi, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

If you’re craving a slice of American pie, cut your bill in half with one of the money saving restaurant deals from MyVoucherCodes.
