The problem is the order, because the difference between paying £150 for a term's books and paying almost nothing usually comes down to what you check before you spend, not where you shop.

So this guide works differently. It runs in the order that saves the most money, starting with the books you should never buy at all, and it judges every option on net cost, which is what you pay minus what you get back when you sell. A £40 book you resell for £28 is cheaper than a £15 book nobody wants. Once that clicks, the whole textbook problem changes shape.

How to get free textbooks through your university library

This is the step every "cheap textbooks" list skips, and it's worth more than all the discount codes put together.

Most UK universities now licence core texts as ebooks you already pay for through your fees. Open your module's online reading list (usually run on a system like Talis Aspire or Leganto, linked from your VLE) and look for two things. First, the tags: "essential" means you'll actually use it, while "recommended" and "further reading" are, more often than not, books you will never open. Second, the ebook link: if a title shows as available online through the library, a platform like Kortext or BibliU, or the library's databases, that's the textbook sorted for free. Two more free routes before you spend anything. Your library will hold physical copies of core texts, often in a short loan collection during term, and can usually get anything else through an inter-library loan. And your lecturer knows exactly which chapters the module actually uses, so ask. It's common for a £50 "essential" text to boil down to a handful of key chapters, and most university libraries can legally supply a scanned chapter on request under their copyright licence.

When is the best time to buy university textbooks?

Here's the pattern nobody mentions. Every September, thousands of freshers buy their full reading list in week one, second-hand prices jump with the demand, and by November the seminar room consensus is that half those books were never needed.

Waiting is the tactic. Go to your first week of lectures with nothing but the free options above, see which books you reach for repeatedly, then buy just those. You'll buy fewer books, and you'll buy them after the September rush rather than during it.

If you want to plan further ahead, the used market is at its friendliest in early summer, when finalists clear their shelves and listings pile up. Before comparing shops, change the question from "what does it cost?" to "what will it have cost me by the time I sell it on?". Here's an illustrative example for a £45 core text, using typical second-hand markdowns:

• New at full price: £45, sell it on for around £15 next summer. Net cost £30.
• Good used copy: £25, sell for the same £15. Net cost £10.
• Previous edition: £8, worth a couple of pounds after. Net cost £6.
• Borrowed or read via your uni's ebook licence: £0.

Same book, four prices. And there's a trick that makes this practical rather than theoretical: before buying any expensive book, check its resale value first. Students one year above you. The cheapest stock in the country is sitting in the flat upstairs. Check for a course or society Facebook group, SU book sale or department notice board, and if there isn't one, a message to your course rep asking last year's cohort usually shakes loose half a reading list. World of Books. eBay. Best for exact editions, because sellers list the ISBN and photos. Charity shops near campus. Shops within a mile of a university absorb graduate bookshelves every summer, so July to September is prime hunting. Oxfam's specialist book branches are the ones worth a detour.

How to get discounts on new university textbooks

Sometimes only new will do: a brand new edition, a workbook you'll write in, or a text you'll keep for your career. Even then, don't pay the cover price.

Buy direct from the academic publisher. This is the option most students never think of, and it's often the biggest percentage saving on new copies. Waterstones, with the right discount. Are textbook subscription platforms worth it? (Perlego, Kortext & OpenStax)

If your subject leans on standard first-year material, there may be a completely free, completely legal textbook covering it. OpenStax publishes peer-reviewed textbooks you can read online or download at no cost, and it's strongest in maths, sciences, economics, psychology and business. They won't match a UK module reading list line for line, but as a second explanation of a topic you're stuck on, free is unbeatable.

Perlego is the subscription option, a Netflix-style library of over a million academic and professional titles. It sells two plans, Essential and Complete, billed monthly, semesterly or yearly, with the longer plans meaningfully cheaper; check the current rates on Perlego's pricing page against your reading list before committing. The honest maths: a subscription beats buying only if several of your actual set texts are in its library, so search for them on the free trial before you pay anything.

You'll notice we haven't listed the pirate ebook sites that some student guides quietly point to. Setting aside that the downloads are often outdated scans with missing pages, they rip off the academics whose royalties fund the next edition, and university plagiarism software isn't the only thing that logs where your PDFs come from. With this many legal routes to a free or nearly free copy, it's a bad trade.

Can you use older editions of university textbooks?

Usually yes, and this is where some of the steepest discounts live, because the used market treats superseded editions as nearly worthless even when the content barely changed.

Do a two-minute check before buying one. Compare the contents pages of the old and new editions (publishers show these online), and ask your lecturer or check the module handbook to see whether the edition is specified for a reason. Chapter numbering sometimes shifts between editions, which matters when a seminar sheet says "read chapter 7".

When shouldn't you chance it? Anything where the content itself dates: law and tax, where legislation moves yearly, clinical subjects, and anything examined against the latest referencing or regulatory standards. One more trap in the bargain bins: international editions. They're legal to buy, and often dramatically cheaper, but page numbers and end-of-chapter questions can differ from the UK printing, which gets annoying the first time your tutor sets "questions 3 to 9 on page 214".

This is the step that turns everything above into a system, because selling well is what makes buying nearly free.

Timing first: sell in late August and September, when the next cohort is buying and prices peak. Selling in June, when every other finalist is flooding the market, is how you get offered pennies.

Where to sell depends on effort. So, which supermarket delivery is actually cheapest?

The honest answer depends on the size of your basket and how often you order. Iceland is a strong option for a £40-plus next-day shop because it currently offers free next-day delivery at that level. Morrisons stands out for smaller regular shops because its Delivery Pass covers eligible orders from £25 without the usual small-order charge. For flexible shoppers ordering once a week, a low-cost midweek pass from Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Ocado or Tesco may work out cheaper than paying for individual slots.

How to calculate your true grocery delivery cost

Most supermarket comparisons stop at the delivery fee. Ours uses six steps:

1. Start with the price of the groceries you would genuinely buy.
2. Apply any loyalty prices you can actually access.
3. Add the delivery slot charge.
4. Add any small-order or minimum-basket charge.
5. If you have a pass, divide its cost by the number of deliveries you expect to use.
6. Apply an eligible voucher code last.

The calculation is:

True delivered cost = grocery basket + slot fee + small-order fee + pass cost per order - genuine discounts

The word "genuine" matters. Spending £10 more to trigger a £5 saving has not saved you £5. It has cost you another £5, unless those extra items were already on next week's list.

We have also kept standard supermarket delivery separate from rapid services. An emergency bag of groceries arriving in an hour is useful, but it is not a fair comparison with a planned weekly shop.

UK supermarket delivery fees and minimum spend thresholds (2026)

These are headline national terms for standard online grocery orders. Some supermarkets show the exact delivery price only after you enter a postcode or choose a slot.

Tesco's official delivery charges show standard slots from £3 to £7 and Flexi Saver slots from £1.50. Its minimum-order guidance confirms the £5 charge below a £50 delivery basket.

Sainsbury's delivery guidance states a £25 minimum. Orders below £50 currently cost £7.50 for next-day delivery, while next-day slots above £50 range from £1 to £6.

Asda applies a £4 charge when a delivery basket is below £40, even if the customer has a pass. The exact standard slot fee depends on the delivery selected.

Morrisons accepts online orders from £25. Its standard slots start from £1.50, and orders between £25 and £40 normally pick up a £3 small-order charge unless an eligible Delivery Pass removes it.

Iceland has a £25 minimum online order and currently advertises free next-day delivery when you spend over £40. Charges for smaller baskets are confirmed during booking.

Waitrose has a £40 minimum basket and advertises standard delivery from £2.

Ocado's fees can depend on the address, basket and slot. Its pass prices are public, but the best pay-as-you-go answer needs a postcode and live checkout check.

Cheapest supermarket delivery for small orders (Under £40)

A smaller basket is where headline delivery prices become least helpful.

Imagine your groceries cost £32 before delivery:

• Tesco adds a £5 minimum-basket charge, plus the chosen slot.
• Sainsbury's accepts the order but charges £7.50 for next-day delivery.
• Asda adds a £4 minimum-basket charge, plus the selected delivery fee.
• Morrisons adds the normal slot and a £3 small-order charge without a pass.
• Iceland accepts the order, but charges are shown at checkout because it is below the free next-day threshold.
• Waitrose is not available because the basket is below £40.

There is no reliable winner until the live Morrisons and Iceland slot prices are visible. However, Morrisons becomes particularly interesting if you order regularly. Its Delivery Pass covers eligible shops from £25 and removes the normal small-order charge on a covered slot.

Do not pad a £32 basket to £40 or £50 with random snacks just to avoid a fee. First ask whether those extra products replace something you would buy next week. If not, paying a £3 or £4 charge could be the cheaper choice.

For a very small top-up, Click & Collect or a quick local shop can beat every home-delivery option. Factor in your own bus fare, fuel and time rather than pretending collection is completely free.

Cheapest supermarket delivery for shared houses and group orders

A shared house has one simple advantage: four smaller shopping lists can become one basket that clears the awkward thresholds.

Suppose four housemates each add £12 of genuinely shared food, cleaning products and toiletries. The £48 basket:

• clears the £40 Asda threshold
• avoids Morrisons' usual small-order charge
• qualifies for Iceland's free next-day delivery when the current over-£40 condition is met
• falls just short of Tesco's £50 threshold
• sits below the level at which Sainsbury's cheaper £1 to £6 next-day range begins
• clears Waitrose's £40 minimum

At that basket size, Iceland is the obvious delivery-fee benchmark. Still compare the grocery total elsewhere. Free delivery does not rescue a basket that costs £8 more.

Cheapest supermarket delivery for a weekly family shop (£50+)

Weekly shoppers are the people most likely to benefit from a pass, but only after comparing the grocery basket.

For a £50-plus shop, the shortlist changes:

• Tesco offers Flexi Saver slots from £1.50, depending on postcode, time and availability.
• Sainsbury's next-day delivery ranges from £1 to £6.
• Iceland's qualifying next-day delivery has no separate fee.
• Waitrose starts at £2 but has a £40 minimum.
• Morrisons starts from £1.50, although the available price depends on the slot.
• Asda and Ocado show the relevant charge when you book.

If the same basket is broadly similar in price at two supermarkets, the delivery charge can decide it. If the food total differs by £10, arguing over a £2 slot misses the expensive part.

Build a 15 to 20-item comparison basket from products you repeatedly buy. Include milk, bread, eggs, fruit, vegetables, protein, one frozen item, a cupboard staple, toiletries and a cleaning product. Keep brand, pack size and quality reasonably consistent.

A pass swaps unpredictable slot charges for a monthly, six-month or annual payment. It is useful only when the covered deliveries save more than the subscription costs.

Morrisons publishes its current Delivery Pass prices and £25 qualifying spend. Sainsbury's includes current pass prices in its delivery charges guide. Ocado lists Smart Pass monthly and annual prices, while Waitrose confirms its £40 minimum and subscription prices.

Passes can auto-renew and a pass does not guarantee that your favourite slot will be available. Check the renewal terms, covered days and basket threshold before joining.

Substitutions can change value

A substitution might be a welcome upgrade or a poor replacement. Check whether the supermarket charges the lower price, the substituted price or another amount, and reject anything you will not use.

Minimum spends encourage basket padding

Adding useful cupboard staples can make sense. Adding six desserts because the progress bar says "£4 to free delivery" is not a savings strategy, however heroic the desserts look.

Freshers week, also called welcome week, is the run of events before teaching starts: registration, welcome talks, campus tours, the freshers fair, society tasters and the social calendar the week is famous for. Dates vary by university, but most fall in mid to late September 2026, with a few running into early October. Plenty of universities stretch the programme over two weeks or stagger it for international arrivals.

The week splits into three kinds of event, and knowing which is which saves both stress and money. There is admin you must do: registration, ID collection, setting up your university email and IT accounts. There is academic induction you should do: course welcome talks, library tours, meeting your personal tutor. And there is the social programme, which is entirely optional, however loudly it is marketed. Nothing on a wristband is compulsory. Every night out, society fee and event ticket is a choice, and choices can be planned.

Registration is the one event that is also a money event. Your first maintenance loan instalment is only released once your university confirms you have registered, so do it as early as your university allows, and check in advance which documents you need so you are not queueing twice. Passport or ID, your acceptance details and sometimes passport photos are the usual list, but your university's enrolment pages will state it exactly.

For new full-time students funded by Student Finance England, the 2026/27 maximum Maintenance Loans are £10,830 a year if you live away from home outside London, £14,135 in London and £9,118 if you live at home. They are normally paid in three instalments around the start of each term. Divide what is left by the number of weeks until that January payment, usually around fifteen. That number is your weekly budget for everything else: food, going out, transport, laundry, the lot.

Here is an illustrative example, and it is an example, not a promise about your numbers. A student on the full £10,830 away-from-home rate gets roughly £3,610 in September. If their halls rent for the term is £2,200, they have about £1,410 left, which across fifteen weeks is £94 a week. On a lower, means-tested loan with the same rent, the weekly number can drop under £50, which is exactly why so many students need part-time work or family top-ups, and why finding your number in week one rather than week eight matters so much.

Two habits make the number stick. First, the day the loan lands, move the term's rent into a separate space, a savings pot or second account, anywhere your card cannot reach it on a night out. Rent money that sits in your main balance gets spent, every year, by thousands of people who were sure it wouldn't be. Second, accept that freshers week itself will run over budget, because it always does, and plan for it deliberately: give the week its own one-off allowance from your leftover figure, enjoy it, and start the weekly number from the Monday teaching begins.

One thing not to lean on: the 0% student overdraft. It is the best borrowing you will ever be offered, which is exactly why it should be your emergency buffer rather than week-one spending money. An overdraft used in September is a debt you carry all year, and the interest-free part does not last forever after you graduate.

The ultimate Freshers Week financial checklist: 6 steps

Here is the spine of the whole thing. These six moves are all free or nearly free, they are all at their most generous in September, and the order matters because several of them unlock the next one.

1. Open your student bank account before you leave home. Joining offers are at their strongest for the new intake and you can usually only hold one student account, depending on the bank's rules, so compare before applying. More below, because it deserves its own section.
2. Claim the travel perk or buy the railcard. If your bank account comes with a free 16-25 Railcard, activate it immediately. If not, a 16-25 Railcard costs £35 a year and takes a third off most rail fares. Depending on the fare, it can pay for itself after one or two eligible journeys. Buy it before you book your Christmas train, not after.
3. Get verified on the discount platforms. Student Beans, UNiDAYS and TOTUM's digital tier are all free and each carries offers the others do not, so do all three with your new academic email the day you get it. This is the step that makes half the offers in the rest of this guide claimable at a till.
4. Start the Amazon Prime Student trial in mid September. The trial is six months free, then £4.49 a month or £47.49 a year, and the timing is the one lever you control. Start it around freshers week and the free window can cover autumn sale events, Black Friday, Christmas and the January sales, with no membership charge until spring. The most valuable freebies available to a UK student in 2026 are not at the freshers fair. They are attached to student bank accounts, and September is when the offers peak, because the banks know a student account often becomes a customer for decades. First, the conditions: most perks require you to pay money in, Santander's railcard offer, for instance, requires £500 paid in every four months, which your loan instalments will usually cover, but you need to know the rule exists.

Third, the perk you will actually use: £120 of Deliveroo credit is worth £0 to someone who cooks, and a railcard is worth £0 to someone studying in their home city. If you already opened an ordinary account at sixteen, switching is not the chore it sounds. The Current Account Switch Service can move your balance and payments across within seven working days. You apply for the student account like any new customer, normally with your university offer or enrolment details as proof of status. You can usually only hold one student account, but the exact rule depends on the bank, as MoneyHelper explains. How to register for student discounts: UNiDAYS, Student Beans and TOTUM

Nearly every student offer in this guide and beyond is claimed through one of three verification platforms, so set them all up the day your academic email goes live. It takes about five minutes each, and there is no need to pick just one, because offers are frequently exclusive to a single platform.

Student Beans is free and is where most of the current food offers live; you show the ID inside the app at tills, so download the app rather than relying on the website. UNiDAYS is free and covers a different set of brands, including the Apple Music student plan.

TOTUM now has a free digital membership, with a paid TOTUM+ tier at £14.99 a year that adds a physical card, an 18+ PASS proof-of-age card and an ISIC international student card; most students never need the paid tier, but the PASS card is genuinely useful if you would rather not carry your passport on nights out.

The only real cost of all three is marketing email, which each app lets you switch off in settings. Once verified, you will use these logins constantly, from the Greggs till to the checkout of half the retailers you buy from all year, so this is five minutes that keeps paying out until you graduate.

The fair is the best free hour of the week if you treat it as a supply run rather than a sales pitch. Bring an empty bag. The pens, tote bags, snacks, vouchers and occasionally genuinely useful stuff like phone chargers and water bottles are all there to be taken, and the local takeaway and taxi vouchers are worth more across a term than they look on the day.

The food offers are worth knowing cold before you arrive, because the famous ones have changed. Greggs still does a free sausage roll when you buy a cold sandwich deal and show your Student Beans ID in store, and the Greggs App gives anyone a free hot drink for signing up. KFC gives verified students a free Popcorn Chicken Snack Box on a £5 spend through a slightly fiddly QR route in its app. The McDonald's free cheeseburger with student ID, still promised by half the older guides online, is gone. And the birthday freebies from the big chains' apps mostly require you to be a member before your birthday month starts, so join the apps in September even if your birthday is in May.

The skips are just as important. Do not pay a society joining fee on day one for a hobby you have never tried; nearly every club runs free taster sessions in the first weeks, so try before you pay. Do not sign a gym contract during freshers week for the same reason, because your university sports centre and the taster timetable will tell you what you will actually use. And treat anyone at the fair selling a paid membership, card or subscription with the same question you should ask all week: what does this cost me by Christmas?

Are Freshers Week wristbands and event tickets worth the money?

The citywide freshers wristband is usually the biggest discretionary spend of the week, and it is sold hardest in the weeks before you arrive, when you know the least about what you will actually want to do.

Before buying one, run three checks. First, is it official? Your students' union will say which events are theirs; third-party wristbands sold on social media before term are a known trap and sometimes cover nothing your flat is actually going to. Second, count the events you would genuinely attend, price them individually on the venue's own listings, and compare. A wristband only saves money if you use most of it, and most people do not; a band covering ten nights is poor value to someone who will manage four. Third, remember you can almost always pay on the door or buy single tickets in the week itself, once you know which nights your new flatmates are actually going to. Two smaller money notes for the nights themselves. Pre-drinks in the kitchen is not just the cheaper option, it is where most of the friendships actually form; a supermarket run for mixers, snacks and a deck of cards costs less than one club entry and does more. And fancy dress, which will ambush you at least once, does not need to cost anything: charity shops near campus and whatever is already in your suitcase beat a £30 costume that gets worn for four hours.

Setting up a shared student house: Bills, groceries and insurance

If you are in catered halls with bills included, skip ahead. Everyone else has three jobs in week one, and they are worth real money across the year.

The bills. Photograph every meter on move-in day, including both registers if the electricity meter has two, and keep the photos; that one habit ends most billing disputes before they start. Find out who currently supplies the property, open your account from the tenancy start date, and agree the split before the first payment is due, not after. Be deliberate about whose names go on the accounts, because it changes who legally carries the debt: with one name on the account, that person is liable for the whole bill, and with everyone named, the supplier can chase any one of you for the lot. A standing order from each housemate to whoever manages each bill, set up in week one, prevents ninety percent of the arguments.

If your household is all full-time students, the property will not normally pay council tax, but you may still need to tell the local authority and complete its process. The first big shop. Neither requires effort beyond noticing, and together they routinely knock a meaningful slice off a weekly shop that a meal deal habit puts straight back on.

The stuff you brought. One boring five-minute job before the week gets loud: work out whether the laptop, phone and bike you have just moved into a building full of strangers are insured at all. Many halls include some cover and some family home policies stretch to a student's room, so you may need nothing. Assuming is not knowing, and finding out after a theft is the expensive way. Freshers week is peak free trial season, and the mistake is starting them all at once so they all end at once, usually in one crowded, expensive October. Run them in sequence instead and the free months stretch most of the way to summer.

Start with Prime Student in mid September, as covered above, because its six-month window is the longest and the calendar timing matters most; the first £4.49 charge on a freshers-week start would not land until March. Activate the Deliveroo Plus Silver membership that comes with eligible Prime memberships. It currently includes free delivery on eligible restaurant orders over £15 and shop orders over £25, although service fees and other charges may still apply. Then stagger the one-month trials through the autumn, one per month, each with a cancellation reminder set the day you start it. The prices waiting at the end are the part the freebie lists skip, so here they are: Spotify Premium Student runs £5.99 a month after its free month, less than half the standard rate. Apple Music's student plan is also £5.99 and quietly includes Apple TV+ at no extra cost, which nudges it ahead on pure value if you are not welded to your playlists. YouTube Premium's student rate is currently £7.99 after the trial. Audible gives you 30 days free, then £5.99 a month on the Standard plan.

None of these is a bad price, which is exactly why the reminder matters: the danger is not the subscription, it is the subscription you forgot you had. Cancellation rules differ. Amazon usually shows whether Prime benefits will continue until the trial end date when you cancel. Spotify says cancelling during a zero-price trial moves the account back to its free service immediately. Check the cancellation screen before confirming and use Spotify's official cancellation guidance if you are unsure. A calendar reminder is safer than assuming every trial works the same way.

Your ac.uk email address is itself one of the most valuable things you acquire in freshers week, and most students never use half of what it opens. Students at eligible institutions can get the web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint through Microsoft 365 Education, and many universities separately license the full desktop apps, so check your IT portal before paying.

Notion for Education offers eligible students its Plus plan, while Figma has an education plan for verified students. If you will touch code, the GitHub Student Developer Pack bundles development tools and learning resources, and you do not need to study computer science to check whether you qualify.

Some UK library authorities also include online learning services with a library card. Availability varies, so start with your university and local library websites. Claim these the day you enrol. Unlike the fair freebies, they do not run out, but every month you go without them is a month you might have paid for something your status already covers.

How to save money on university reading lists and textbooks

Every September, thousands of freshers buy their entire reading list in the first week, second-hand prices spike with the demand, and by November half those books have never been opened. The reading list is a syllabus, not a shopping list.

Start with the tags on your module's online reading list. "Essential" normally means you will use it, while "recommended" and "further reading" may only support a particular topic or assignment. Then check the free routes before spending anything: your university library may license a core text as an ebook, hold short-loan physical copies or provide a digitised extract legally through the library. Ask your lecturer which edition and chapters the module actually uses before buying.

For the books you do end up buying, think in net cost, which is what you pay minus what you get back when you sell. A £25 used copy of a current edition that resells for £15 next summer costs you £10, while a £15 book nobody wants costs the full £15. Buy second-hand after the September rush, check an ISBN valuation before committing to anything expensive and keep the highlighter off the pages so the resale half of the maths survives.

Everything above, in the order to do it:

• Before you leave home: open the student bank account and start any switch. Apply for student finance if you somehow have not. Book the cheapest route to your city with a railcard if you already hold one.
• Move-in day: photograph the meters. Photograph your room and inventory. Find the fuse box before you need it in the dark.
• Day one or two: register with the university so your loan releases. Set up your academic email, then verify on Student Beans, UNiDAYS and TOTUM. Claim the uni email software freebies while you are at it.
• Mid week: freshers fair with an empty bag. Free society tasters, no joining fees yet. Council tax exemption submitted for shared houses.

The McDonald's free cheeseburger died quietly, the Krispy Kreme student doughnut got downgraded to a discount, and at least one article ranking for this search is still promoting a pizza offer that expired last October. So we did the boring bit for you: every offer below was checked on 28 July 2026, either on the brand's own site or on the live offer page you'd actually claim it from. For each one we'll tell you what you get, what it asks of you in return, and what it costs when the free part ends, because a freebie that quietly turns into a £12.99 subscription isn't really free.

One honest note before the list. The best freebies on this page are not the sausage rolls. They're the sign-up perks further down that are worth £100 or more, and almost no freebie list leads with them because doughnuts get more clicks. We've kept the doughnuts in, but don't leave without reading the bank account section.

A bit of housekeeping too: some brands check you're actually a student before handing anything over, usually through a free verification app or a SheerID check at signup. Where an offer needs one, we say so in the entry, and it takes a couple of minutes with your uni email (worth turning the marketing emails off while you're in the settings). This section is shorter than it was five years ago, because the big chains have been trimming their student offers. Here's what survived, checked in the last week of July 2026.

Greggs: a free sausage roll with a sandwich deal. Buy a cold Sandwich Deal (a cold sandwich plus a drink) and show your Student Beans ID at the till for a free sausage roll or vegan sausage roll. In store only, at participating shops, and not on click and collect or Just Eat. On top of that, anyone who downloads the Greggs App gets a free regular hot or iced drink just for signing up, a free sweet treat on their birthday, and a stamp system where nine purchases in a category earn a free tenth. KFC: a free Popcorn Chicken Snack Box. Spend £5 or more and it's yours. The claiming route is slightly odd: you enter your Student Beans ID into the KFC app, which generates a QR code to scan. Two minutes of faff, free chicken. Worth pairing with whatever KFC vouchers are running that week.

Krispy Kreme: the workaround. The famous free student doughnut is gone, and the actual student offer is now 12% off. But Krispy Kreme Rewards, which anyone can join with no student ID, gives you a free doughnut for signing up, a free Original Glazed on your birthday, and points on whatever you buy afterwards. Same doughnut, different door.

Birthday freebies generally. Greggs, Krispy Kreme and Subway all run birthday rewards through their apps, but most need you to be a member before the birthday month starts.

Not free but worth knowing: Domino's currently runs buy one get one free for verified students, which on a shared order beats most "free item" offers for actual value.

Best student subscription free trials (and their renewal costs)

Free trials are where freebie lists get you into trouble, because the list tells you what's free and not what happens next. So for each of these: the trial, the price after, and the escape route.

A useful rule first. With Amazon Prime and Spotify you keep your benefits until the end of the period even if you cancel on day one, so you can cancel immediately and enjoy the whole trial with no risk. Not every service works that way, so check before trying that trick elsewhere. And whatever you start, put the end date in your phone calendar the day you sign up, because every trial below hands over card details, and the end date is the whole game.

Amazon Prime Student: 6 months free. The longest mainstream trial there is, then £4.49 a month or £47.49 a year, which works out at £3.96 a month against regular Prime's £8.99. Two things stale articles get wrong: it's £4.49, not £4.99, and you don't have to be a student, because anyone in the UK aged 18 to 24 qualifies, verifying with a driving licence or passport instead of a uni email. You get Prime Video (with ads, unless you pay £2.99 extra like everyone else), the Amazon Music tier, ODEON tickets at two for £10 Monday to Thursday, National Express discounts and 10% off thousands of textbooks. The trial converts to the paid plan automatically at month seven, and it's worth checking the latest Amazon discount codes before you buy anything with that free delivery. Deliveroo Plus: 12 months free with Prime. Link your Prime or Prime Student account and you get a year of Deliveroo Plus Silver at no extra cost, which normally runs £3.49 a month, so the perk is worth £41.88 on its own. That buys free delivery on orders over £15, and it doesn't auto-renew into a paid plan when the year ends, which makes it one of the safest freebies here. Spotify Premium Student: 1 month free, then £5.99. Less than half the £12.99 individual price. You need to be 18 or over and enrolled at an accredited higher education institution, you verify through SheerID, re-verify each year, and can hold the student rate for up to four years. When it ends it rolls onto the full price, so diarise your graduation.

Apple Music student plan: 1 month free, then £5.99. Claimed through UNiDAYS, and it quietly includes Apple TV+ at no extra cost, which nudges it ahead of Spotify on pure value if you're not tied to your playlists. Current Apple Music offers are worth a look before you commit either way.

Audible: 30 days free. Then £5.99 a month for the Standard plan or £8.99 for Premium Plus, which adds a monthly audiobook credit you keep even if you leave. There's no permanent student price, but Prime members are periodically offered extended trials of up to three months around big sale events, and Audible discount codes turn up regularly.

YouTube Premium student: 1 month free, then £7.99. Verified through SheerID like Spotify, re-verified annually, capped at four years. Against the £12.99 standard price it's one of the better student rates, if you're someone who watches enough YouTube to resent the ads. If you only want the music side, YouTube Music Premium has its own student plan at £5.49.

The mistake to avoid: starting all of these in freshers week. Run them one at a time and that's nearly a year of free music, telly and audiobooks. Burn them together and it's one crowded October.

Microsoft 365, free. Any valid uni email gets you the web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook free through Microsoft's education programme, with Copilot Chat included, and it lasts as long as you're enrolled. Before you pay for anything, check your uni's IT portal, because many universities separately license the full desktop apps for every enrolled student and never make much noise about it.

The GitHub Student Developer Pack, absurdly underclaimed. Free for verified students, the Student Developer Pack bundles over 50 paid tools: GitHub Pro, JetBrains IDEs, cloud credits, a free domain and more. It's aimed at developers but you don't need to be studying computer science to qualify, and if you ever touch code it's the single most valuable software freebie on this page.

Notion and Figma, free student plans. Notion gives students its Plus plan free with a uni email, which means unlimited blocks and 30 days of version history rather than the capped free tier, though Notion AI isn't included. Figma's education plan covers verified students too, including FigJam. Between them, that's your notes system and your design tool sorted for the length of your degree.

LinkedIn Learning, free through your library. Many UK library authorities give members free access to LinkedIn Learning's full course catalogue with just a library card. It varies by council, so search your local library's website. A library card is free, which makes this a freebie wrapped in a freebie.

The Times for £9.99 a year. Not free, but we're including it because at 92% off through Student Beans it's close enough, and the freebies hiding inside it are real: the current deal bundles three months of Perlego, the online textbook library, plus Times+ perks like two-for-one Everyman cinema tickets on Wednesdays. It runs at that price for three years, for new subscribers aged 18 or over in higher education. Check the current Times student subscription deal before signing up.

The everyday ones. National museums and galleries are free for everyone in the UK, no student ID involved, with student discounts on the paid exhibitions on top. And free condoms are available to young people through local C-Card schemes run by councils and the NHS, typically up to age 24, with the age range varying by area.

Student bank account freebies: Free railcards and cash bonuses

Here's the part most freebie lists bury or skip: the highest-value free things a UK student can claim in 2026 come with student bank accounts, and they're worth more than every doughnut on this page combined.

• Santander's Edge Student account comes with a free four-year 16-25 Railcard, currently worth £115, since a 16-25 Railcard normally costs £35 a year (or £80 for three) and takes a third off most rail fares, with a £12 minimum fare on weekday mornings. Mature students can get the railcard at any age with a uni endorsement. If you'll ever take a train home, this is the big one. There's also a prize draw running until 16 October 2026 where every eligible entrant wins at least £20. The full conditions are on Santander's student account page, including paying in £500 every four months.
• NatWest refreshed its offer in July 2026: £100 cash plus a free four-year tastecard, which covers restaurant deals, cinema discounts and 25% off barista drinks through its Coffee Club. The catch: you can't have taken a NatWest student incentive since July 2022, and the interest-free overdraft starts at £2,000 in year one.
• Nationwide offers £100 cash plus £120 of Just Eat vouchers, paid as £10 a month for a year.
• Lloyds offers £100 cash plus up to £120 in Deliveroo vouchers, with a tuition fee prize draw on top. And if you'd rather earn than be given, TSB pays 5% interest on balances up to £500.

You can only hold one student account, so pick the perk you'll actually use rather than the biggest headline number, and check each bank's eligibility rules and pay-in conditions before switching, because they change every academic year. A free railcard also stacks nicely with the other student travel discounts running at any given time.

Discontinued UK student freebies (and current alternatives)

Half the frustration with this topic is turning up at a till with an offer that died in 2023. These are the ones still doing the rounds that we can confirm are gone or changed, as of 28 July 2026.

• McDonald's free cheeseburger, McFlurry or Mayo Chicken with student ID. Discontinued. The current sign-up perk is 1,000 bonus points for joining MyMcDonald's Rewards, which anyone gets. The latest McDonald's offers are app deals, not student ones.
• Krispy Kreme's free student doughnut. Now 12% off, with the free doughnut moved into the open-to-everyone Rewards scheme, as above.
• Subway's free sub and Pizza Express's free dough balls. Both gone. Subway students get rewards points and a birthday cookie; the dough balls were an O2 Priority perk from another era.
• "Free Canva Pro for students." Never true for universities. Canva's education plan is for school pupils and teachers, not higher education. Uni students get the standard free tier unless their university pays for Campus access.
• "Students get free NHS eye tests." In England this only covers 16 to 18 year olds in full-time education, so a typical 19-year-old undergraduate pays. The full eligibility list is on the NHS free eye tests page. Scotland is the exception, where NHS-funded eye exams are available to everyone.
• "Free Uber One for students." It's 50% off, currently £2.49 a month through UNiDAYS. Decent, not free.
• The £30 Railcard. A 16-25 Railcard is £35 a year now, or £80 for three years, which makes the free four-year version above worth even more.

If you spot any of these advertised as live elsewhere, the article you're reading hasn't been checked in a while.

When to claim what: a quick calendar

Freebies have seasons, and the order you claim them in changes what they're worth.

September: open the student bank account first, while the switching offers are at their strongest for the new intake, and grab your railcard through it. Freshers fairs are peak physical freebie season, so go with an empty bag.

Mid September: start the Prime Student trial. Six months from freshers week covers Prime Day in October, Black Friday, Christmas and the January sales, all inside the free window, with your first charge not landing until spring.

Through the year: run your streaming and music trials one per month rather than all at once, and join the birthday reward apps at least a few weeks before your birthday month.

Any time: the uni email unlocks (Microsoft 365, GitHub, Notion, Figma) don't expire until you graduate, so claim them the day you enrol and they're working for you all degree.

Prime Student costs £4.49 a month in the UK, or £47.49 for the year, once your six month free trial ends. That is exactly half the price of regular Prime, and for most students who order online at least once a month, the delivery savings alone cover the fee. But "most" is doing some work in that sentence, so rather than hand you another list of benefits, we have worked out the exact point where the membership pays for itself, who should skip it, and how to switch over if you are already paying full price for Prime.

Two things worth knowing before we start. First, you no longer need to be a student to get this discount. Since Amazon widened the scheme, anyone in the UK aged 18 to 24 qualifies, degree or not, and plenty of older guides still get this wrong. Second, all prices in this guide were checked on 28 July 2026.

And before you pay for any membership, it is worth a quick look at the latest Amazon discount codes, because the Prime Student trial itself is usually listed there alongside money off the things you would use the delivery for.

How much does Amazon Prime Student cost in the UK?

Here is the full pricing picture for 2026:

• Free trial: 6 months (regular Prime only gives you 30 days)
• After the trial: £4.49 a month, or £47.49 a year
• Regular Prime: £8.99 a month, or £95 a year

The annual plan works out at £3.96 a month, so if you know you will use it all year, paying upfront saves you about £6.39 against paying monthly. On a student budget that is a takeaway, so it is not nothing, but the monthly plan is the safer pick if you might cancel over summer. You can cancel either plan whenever you like.

One thing the price does not include: ad free Prime Video. Like every Prime member in the UK, you will see adverts unless you pay an extra £2.99 a month, which is worth factoring in if streaming is your main reason for signing up.

Amazon Prime Student eligibility requirements

There are now two separate routes in, and this is where a lot of the advice online is out of date. Several big guides still say the age route covers 18 to 22 year olds. It was widened, and Amazon's current terms say 18 to 24.

Route one: you're a student. You qualify at any age if you are enrolled at a higher education institution in the UK or Republic of Ireland. The easiest way to verify is your academic email address, and Amazon sends a confirmation link to it. No .ac.uk address? There is an alternative route where you provide proof of enrolment instead, so distance learners and students at institutions with odd email setups are not locked out. You keep the discount for up to four years or until you stop being a student, whichever comes first.

Route two: you're 18 to 24. No course required. You verify your age by uploading a driving licence or passport, and you keep the discounted rate until you turn 25.

If you move between the two, for example you join at 18 through the age route and then start a degree at 21, there is a combined cap of six years of discounted membership. You can check your eligibility and start the trial on Amazon's Prime Student page.

Prime Student benefits vs. standard Amazon Prime

The core membership is the same Prime everyone else pays £95 a year for: unlimited One Day and Same Day Delivery on millions of items, Prime Video (with ads, as above), Amazon Music's Prime tier with 100 million songs in shuffle mode, Prime Gaming, Prime Reading, unlimited photo storage, and early access to Prime Day and Black Friday deals.

On top of that, students and 18 to 24 year olds get a set of extras that full price members do not:

• A year of Deliveroo Plus Silver free, which normally costs £3.49 a month and gets you free delivery on food orders over £15. It does not auto renew into a paid plan when the year ends, and you can activate it through Deliveroo's Amazon Prime page. Pair it with the current Deliveroo discount codes and takeaway night gets a lot cheaper.
• Two ODEON tickets for £10, Monday to Thursday, on standard 2D screenings, with recliner seats at two for £15. The full terms are on ODEON's Prime offer page.
• 10% off thousands of textbooks, plus 10% off selected products from brands like adidas, Levi's, Vans and Puma.
• National Express discounts for getting home without a car.
• Amazon Music Unlimited's student plan at £5.99 a month, about half the standard rate, if shuffle mode annoys you.

A couple of things are not in the box. Audible is a separate subscription, not a Prime perk, so budget for that if audiobooks get you through the commute (there are usually Audible discount codes knocking around, including extended free trials). And during the six month trial specifically, you cannot share benefits through Amazon Household and you only get a single Twitch channel subscription rather than one a month. Both unlock once you convert to the paid plan.

The break-even point: When does Prime Student pay for itself?

This is the question nobody ranking for this search answers with numbers, so here they are.

The delivery maths. Without Prime, Amazon only gives you free standard delivery on orders over £35. Under that, standard delivery costs up to £5.99, and One Day or Premium Delivery costs £3.99 per delivery on books and media and £4.99 on everything else. Prime Student is £4.49 a month.

So the break even point is one order a month. A single sub £35 order with next day delivery costs more as a non member than the entire monthly membership. On the annual plan, ten next day deliveries across the whole year covers the £47.49. If you are in halls and ordering the way most first years do, phone case, extension lead, laundry bag, the thing you forgot for tomorrow's seminar, you will clear that without noticing. The perks maths. Now stack the extras. The Deliveroo Plus Silver year is worth £41.88 at its normal price, which on its own nearly cancels the £47.49 annual fee. Four cinema trips with a mate on the ODEON offer saves roughly £30 against typical ticket prices. A second year buying £200 of textbooks saves another £20 with the 10% discount. Use even two of those three and the membership has paid for itself before you count a single delivery.

The honest version. Both calculations assume you would have spent that money anyway. If the membership nudges you into ordering things you would otherwise have skipped, the maths flips, and Amazon knows it. Treat the break even numbers as a test of your existing habits, not a target.

Is Prime Student worth it? 4 user verdicts

The halls first year who orders weekly. Worth it, easily. You will beat the one order a month break even in the first fortnight of term, and the Deliveroo perk lands on top. Take the annual plan.

The streamer who barely shops. Borderline, but probably worth it. £4.49 for Prime Video and the Music tier undercuts almost any standalone streaming subscription, and even adding the £2.99 ad free upgrade keeps you at £7.48. Just be honest about whether shuffle mode music and adverts will irritate you into paying for upgrades that change the sums.

The final year in a campus town who orders a few times a term. Skip the paid plan. Use the free trial strategically (more below), then batch your orders over £35 for free standard delivery like everyone did before Prime existed.

The 23 year old who is not a student. You qualify through the age route, so run the same delivery test: one Amazon order a month with paid delivery and the membership washes its face. If you shop less than that, the six month trial is still free money, just set the cancellation reminder.

How to switch from standard Amazon Prime to Prime Student

Already paying £8.99 a month because you signed up before uni, or a parent set the account up? You can move to the student rate without creating a new account, and this is one of the most searched questions about Prime Student, so here is the process in full:

1. Log in to your existing Amazon account. Do not make a new one, or you will lose your order history and any existing benefits.
2. Go to the Prime Student sign up page and complete the form.
3. Verify the usual way: click the link Amazon sends to your academic email, provide proof of enrolment, or upload your driving licence or passport if you are going through the 18 to 24 route.

On the money side, Amazon's help pages state that existing Prime members who sign up for Prime Student "receive a refund for the remaining months of their current Amazon Prime membership". In practice that matters most for annual members, who get the unused full months back rather than losing them. If you pay monthly, the switch simply takes over from your current plan.

One thing Amazon does not spell out anywhere in its terms: whether existing members still get the six month free trial when they switch. Some guides assume you do, but we could not find it confirmed in writing, so treat the refund and the half price rate as the guaranteed part, and the trial as a bonus if it appears at checkout.

How to maximize your 6-month Prime Student free trial

The trial starts when you sign up, not when term does, so timing it is the one lever you control. Sign up in mid September, around freshers week, and the free six months covers Amazon's October Prime Day event, Black Friday, Christmas, the January sales and most of spring term. Your first £4.49 charge would not land until March. Sign up in June instead and you burn half the trial on the summer holidays.

Two housekeeping notes. The trial converts to the paid plan automatically at month seven, so set a phone reminder for month five to decide properly. And if you cancel, you can keep using the benefits until the trial period ends anyway.

What happens to Prime Student when you graduate or turn 25?

The discount does not quietly become a warning letter, it becomes a full price membership. When you graduate, hit the four year student limit or turn 25, your membership automatically renews as regular Prime at £8.99 a month or £95 a year unless you cancel first.

Worth clearing up a persistent myth here: some older articles mention a discounted year after graduation. That is based on how the scheme used to work in the US, and there is nothing like it in Amazon's current UK terms. The half price rate is the whole deal, and when your eligibility ends, so does the discount. Put your graduation month in your calendar with a note to decide whether full price Prime earns its keep, because that is a different calculation, and one where the answer is skip it more often than you would think.

Moving to university has a strange way of turning one bedroom into several thousand pounds' worth of stuff.

There is the laptop you need for your course, the phone you need for everything, headphones, clothes, a bike, books and perhaps a games console that is absolutely there for educational purposes.

If it all disappeared after a burglary, fire or flood, could you afford to replace it?

That is the real question behind student contents insurance. It is not compulsory, and buying a policy should not be your first move. You could already have some cover through your halls or a parent's home insurance. The sensible approach is to find the gaps first, then pay only for the protection you actually need.

The short answer: check your accommodation cover, check any family policy and list what you own before buying anything. If your important belongings are not fully protected in the places you use them, a separate student contents policy or gadget policy may be worth considering.

What is student contents insurance?

Student contents insurance protects belongings you take to university against events listed in the policy. These might include theft, fire, flooding or escape of water.

It is different from buildings insurance. Your landlord or accommodation provider is normally responsible for insuring the building, while contents cover is about the things you own. MoneyHelper confirms that renters generally only need to consider contents insurance, rather than buildings cover.

A policy might protect:

• laptops, tablets and phones
• clothes, shoes and bags
• books and course equipment
• headphones, speakers and games consoles
• sports equipment and musical instruments
• bikes, if cycle cover is included
• belongings temporarily taken outside your accommodation, if personal possessions cover is included

The word "might" matters. Insurance protects you against the events and situations written into the policy, not every possible way an item can go missing or get damaged.

Do students need contents insurance?

There is no legal requirement to buy student contents insurance. MoneyHelper describes contents insurance as optional, although going without it means paying the full replacement cost yourself if something happens.

You are more likely to benefit from cover if:

• replacing your laptop, phone or course equipment would wipe out your savings
• you live in a busy shared house with lots of visitors
• your bedroom or accommodation is not covered elsewhere
• you regularly take expensive items to lectures, the library, work or nights out
• you own a bike, instrument or single item worth more than a policy's normal limit

You may not need a separate policy if your halls already provide suitable cover or a parent's policy protects everything you need. Do not rely on a vague "you should be covered". Ask for the policy wording and check the limits, locations and exclusions.

Our rule is simple: insure the loss that would properly hurt, not every cracked mug and missing charger.

Take the five-minute Student Cover Gap Test

Most guides begin by explaining how to buy insurance. We think the better starting point is checking whether you need to buy it at all.

Step 1: Check your halls or accommodation

Ask your accommodation team:

1. Is contents insurance included in my rent?
2. What is the total cover limit?
3. Is there a limit for one item, such as a laptop?
4. Are belongings covered in shared kitchens and lounges?
5. Does theft require forced entry?
6. Are my phone and laptop covered away from the building?
7. Is accidental damage included?

Do not stop when someone says "insurance is included". A basic halls policy may protect items inside a locked bedroom but leave gaps for a phone stolen in town, a laptop damaged by a drink or belongings left in a communal kitchen.

Step 2: Check a parent or guardian's policy

Some home insurance policies extend cover to children studying away from home. It is never safe to assume this applies.

Ask the insurer:

• Does the policy cover a student living away during term time?
• Must the student return home during university holidays?
• Does it cover halls, a private flat and a shared house?
• What are the total and single-item limits?
• Are items covered outside the accommodation?
• Would a university claim affect the parent's claims history, excess or future price?

Get the answer in writing or find the exact clause in the policy documents.

Step 3: Check your gadgets separately

Your phone, laptop or tablet might already have cover through a packaged bank account, a separate gadget policy or another service. Check the excess, theft rules and whether accidental loss is included.

Step 4: Test the situations that actually matter

Use this table to find where the promises stop.

Any important "No" is a genuine cover gap. Any important "Not sure" needs an answer before you buy.

Step 5: Decide whether the remaining risk is affordable

If the uncovered items could be replaced from your emergency savings without causing a problem, you might choose to self-insure and keep the premium.

If replacing them would mean debt, missing coursework or being unable to travel to university, suitable cover becomes much more useful.

What does student contents insurance usually cover?

Every policy is different, but contents insurance commonly protects personal possessions against named risks such as theft, fire, flood and escape of water. Citizens Advice explains that contents insurance can cover loss, theft or damage to personal possessions, with some policies also protecting items taken outside the home.

Here are the parts worth understanding.

Theft from your accommodation

Check how the insurer defines theft. Some policies require signs of forced or violent entry. That could leave you exposed if somebody walks through an unlocked door or a housemate lets a visitor inside.

This matters in halls and shared houses, where more people have access to the building. Look specifically for the phrases "forced entry", "walk-in theft", "communal areas" and "room-only cover".

Fire, flood and escape of water

Cover may pay to repair or replace belongings damaged by an insured event such as a fire, flood or leaking pipe.

Do not assume every type of water damage is treated the same. Gradual damage, poor maintenance or damp may be excluded. The cause of the damage matters just as much as the damaged item.

Accidental damage

Standard contents insurance does not always include accidental damage. It might be an optional extra.

That is the section likely to matter when a drink reaches your laptop before you do. The Financial Ombudsman Service notes that insurers may reject an accidental-damage claim if the policy did not include that protection or the event does not meet the policy definition.

Cover away from your accommodation

Basic room cover may stop at the front door. Personal possessions or away-from-home cover can protect listed belongings while you are at lectures, on public transport or elsewhere in the UK. Some policies offer wider or worldwide protection.

Check the geographical limit, trip length, exclusions and whether unattended items are covered.

Bike cover and Sold Secure locks

Bike cover often comes with stricter security conditions than the rest of your belongings. A policy may require the bike to be locked through its frame to an immovable object whenever it is left away from your accommodation. It may also restrict cover in communal bike stores, overnight or at certain locations.

Many policies describe the required lock using a Sold Secure rating. Sold Secure rates pedal-cycle locks Diamond, Gold, Silver and Bronze, with Diamond as its highest security grade. The grade your insurer requires may depend on the value of the bike, so do not assume that any lock carrying the Sold Secure name is enough.

Check the policy schedule for the exact grade, locking method and bike-value limit. Then confirm that the specific lock model appears in the official Sold Secure bicycle database. Keep the receipt and take a clear photo of the lock, key number and bike serial number in case you need to claim.

Tenants' liability

Tenants' liability is not the same as protecting your own belongings. It can cover accidental damage to fixtures, fittings or furniture belonging to the landlord, subject to the policy terms.

It could matter if you damage a supplied desk, carpet or sofa. Check the limit and excess rather than assuming it protects every part of the property.

New-for-old replacement

Many contents policies replace an accepted item with a new equivalent, but this is not universal. Some may pay only its current value. Citizens Advice recommends checking whether a policy offers new-for-old or current-value cover.

This changes how much cover you need. A four-year-old laptop may not be worth much second-hand, but replacing it with a suitable new model could cost far more.

What might student contents insurance not cover?

This is where a cheap policy can become expensive.

Common restrictions can include:

• theft when doors or windows were left unlocked
• theft without evidence of forced entry
• belongings left in communal spaces
• phones, laptops or bikes used away from the accommodation
• accidental damage without the relevant add-on
• loss or unexplained disappearance
• items worth more than the single-item limit
• bicycles that were not secured using the required lock, Sold Secure grade or locking method
• belongings left unattended in a vehicle
• damage caused gradually through wear, damp or poor maintenance
• a room left empty for longer than the policy allows

There is also the excess. This is the amount you contribute to a successful claim. If a £180 item is damaged and the excess is £150, the claim may be worth very little.

The Financial Ombudsman Service says most home policies require the customer to pay an excess. Compare it with the value of the items you are most likely to claim for, not just with another policy's premium.

How much student contents cover do you need?

Do not guess based on the three most expensive things you own. A wardrobe, shoes, bedding, kitchen items and course equipment can add up quietly.

Go room by room and estimate what it would cost to replace each item today with a reasonable equivalent. Use new prices if the policy offers new-for-old cover.

The ten-minute replacement-cost audit

Add the replacement cost of:

1. laptop, monitor, tablet and course technology
2. phone, smartwatch, headphones and chargers
3. clothes, coats, shoes and bags
4. books, specialist equipment and materials
5. games console, controllers, TV and speakers
6. bike and cycling equipment
7. musical instruments or sports equipment
8. bedding, towels and room accessories
9. kitchen appliances or utensils you own
10. anything valuable stored elsewhere in the accommodation

Then identify the most expensive individual item. Your policy needs both a suitable total limit and a single-item limit high enough for that item, or it must be specified separately.

Specified versus unspecified items

An unspecified item sits within the policy's general contents cover without being named individually. It is still subject to the single-item limit and any separate limit for valuables, gadgets or items taken away from home.

A specified item is declared to the insurer and listed separately on the policy schedule with its description and insured value. MoneyHelper says an expensive item normally needs to be listed if its value exceeds the policy's single-item limit.

For example, if your MacBook would cost £1,500 to replace but the policy has a £1,000 single-item limit, ask the insurer to add it as a specified item for its full replacement value. If you leave it unspecified, a claim could be capped at £1,000 or treated differently under the policy terms. Also confirm whether specifying it covers use away from the accommodation and accidental damage, as those protections may still be separate.

Keep receipts, serial numbers and clear photos. You do not need to document every sock, but proof of ownership makes life much easier if you claim.

Student contents insurance for halls, shared houses and home

Where you live changes what you should check.

University halls

Start by checking what is included with the room. Cover supplied through halls can be useful, but the default limit or protection away from the building may not match what you own.

Pay particular attention to shared kitchens, common rooms, bikes and high-value gadgets.

Private student halls

Private halls may also include a basic policy. Do the same Cover Gap Test and check whether the insurer needs you to activate, register or upgrade the cover.

A shared student house

A policy designed for a normal family home may not accept an unrelated house share. Tell the insurer exactly who lives there and how the tenancy works.

Room-only cover can protect your belongings without tying your claims history to every housemate. A joint policy might look cheaper, but check whose items are covered and what happens when somebody moves out.

Security conditions matter here. MoneyHelper says many insurers require a lock on the bedroom door for individual cover in a shared house. If your room does not have one, ask the landlord before buying a policy that requires it.

Living at home

Your belongings may already sit within the household contents policy, but check whether expensive course equipment, items used away from home and accidental damage are covered.

A separate gadget policy can make more sense if your phone or laptop is the only weak spot.

Student contents insurance or gadget insurance?

These policies overlap, but they solve different problems.

Do not pay twice for the same risk. Check whether your contents policy already covers your phone and laptop away from home before adding a second policy.

The cheapest quote is only useful if it covers the claim you are worried about.

Compare these in the same order:

1. The situations covered, including theft rules and accidental damage
2. The total contents limit
3. The single-item limit
4. Cover in communal areas
5. Protection away from the accommodation
6. Bike limits, Sold Secure grade and locking requirements
7. The excess for each claim type
8. The unoccupied-room limit
9. Monthly versus annual payment costs
10. Cancellation fees and what happens when the tenancy ends

Answer every application question honestly. A cheaper quote based on the wrong type of accommodation, an undeclared house share or inaccurate security details is no bargain.

How to find cheap student contents insurance

Cheap cover comes from removing duplication and unnecessary extras, not simply choosing the smallest monthly number.

Try these first:

• Check for halls cover before buying another policy.
• Ask whether a parent's policy already includes student belongings.
• Insure only the gaps that would be expensive to handle yourself.
• Increase the excess only if you could comfortably pay it tomorrow.
• Pay annually if it is cheaper and you can afford the upfront cost.
• Remove extras you do not need, but keep protection for your realistic risks.
• Compare the full price after interest, fees and promotions.
• Review cover when you move address or buy an expensive item.

What to do if something is stolen or damaged

Act quickly, but do not throw away damaged items before the insurer tells you what it needs.

1. Make the property safe and prevent further loss if you can.
2. Report theft, burglary or criminal damage to the police and keep the crime reference number.
3. Contact the insurer as soon as possible.
4. Photograph the damage and keep receipts, serial numbers and other proof of ownership.
5. Write down what happened while it is fresh.
6. Follow the insurer's instructions before arranging repairs or replacements.

West Midlands Police advises students to keep valuables out of sight, lock doors and windows, register technology and report suspicious activity. Those habits can prevent a loss and help you meet the security conditions in your policy.

If a claim or complaint is not handled fairly, follow the insurer's complaints process first. You may then be able to take an eligible complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

We used current figures from Ofgem, Water UK and TV Licensing, plus the student bills companies' own websites, to build a transparent 2026 budget. That means you can see what a shared house may cost to run, what each housemate might pay and whether a student bills package is worth the extra money.

The short version is this: arranging the bills yourselves will usually cost less if your house uses a normal amount of energy. A package can still be worth paying for if you want fixed payments, less admin or uncapped energy, but the public prices are not directly comparable with normal pay-for-what-you-use tariffs.

The useful question is not simply, "Which option is cheapest?" It is, "How much are we paying someone else to take the admin and energy-price risk away?"

How much are student bills per month in 2026?

Using a medium Ofgem energy profile, the 2026-27 average water bill and a £30 monthly broadband allowance, a shared house in England or Wales should use about £222 a month as a starting budget. That is before any TV Licence or optional extras.

Split equally, that comes to roughly:

• £111 each in a two-person house
• £74 each in a three-person house
• £55 each in a four-person house
• £44 each in a five-person house
• £37 each in a six-person house

Those are planning figures, not quotes. The house itself matters as much as the number of people in it. A draughty five-bedroom terrace with an old boiler can use far more energy than a modern flat, and an electric-only property needs a different calculation.

The figures also exclude contents insurance, streaming subscriptions, mobile bills and council tax. Full-time student-only households do not normally have to pay council tax, but the household must tell or apply to its local council.

Why Ofgem gives both £1,862 and £1,663 for the same price-cap period

This is the bit most student bills guides miss.

Ofgem announced that the energy price cap rose by 13% from 1 July 2026. Its main comparison uses the previous "typical household" consumption figures and produces an annual headline of £1,862.

Ofgem also changed its Typical Domestic Consumption Values from 1 July because household energy use has fallen. Under the revised medium-use figures of 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas, the same July unit rates produce a benchmark annual bill of about £1,663.

Both figures are official. They are not rival tariffs and the lower number does not mean energy became cheaper. It assumes the household uses less energy.

For budgeting, the Ofgem unit rates and standing charges matter more than the headline:

These are Great Britain averages for a standard variable tariff paid by Direct Debit and include VAT. Your rates vary by region, meter and payment type. Northern Ireland has a separate energy market and is not covered by Ofgem's price cap.

Most importantly, the price cap does not cap your total bill. It limits what a supplier can charge per unit and in standing charges on default tariffs. Use more energy and you pay more.

Our 2026 student utility bills calculation

We have shown every assumption so you can replace it with a real quote or your property's previous annual usage.

For energy, we applied Ofgem's July 2026 average rates to its revised low, medium and high annual consumption profiles. We then added:

• £639 a year for water and sewerage, the Water UK national average for England and Wales in 2026-27
• £360 a year for broadband, a transparent £30 monthly planning allowance based on Save the Student's current four-person estimate
• no TV Licence in the core figure, because many student houses do not need one

These figures assume a gas-heated property with single-rate electricity, paid by Direct Debit in England or Wales. They do not include a TV Licence.

Do not copy this energy figure into an electric-only property or one using Economy 7. Electric heating and hot water can move much more of the household's energy use onto the electricity bill, while a dual-rate tariff charges different prices at different times. Use the property's previous annual kWh figures and its actual day and night rates wherever possible.

If your household needs one colour TV Licence, add £180 a year, or £15 a month for the household. One licence can cover a joint tenancy or viewing in one shared area. If housemates have separate tenancy agreements and watch in their own rooms, more than one licence may be needed.

In Scotland, water and sewerage are generally collected with council tax and any council tax discount also applies to those charges. A household made up entirely of full-time students can be exempt, but should confirm its position with the local council. The £639 water assumption should therefore not be copied into a Scottish budget.

Average student bills for two to six housemates

The table below shows what each person would pay if the relevant household total were divided equally. It is a splitting table, not a claim that a six-person house will use the same energy as a two-person house.

The per-person cost falls as fixed or partly fixed costs are shared, but energy use will normally rise as more people shower, cook and run devices. Ofgem does not publish a special student-house profile, so a large household should treat the high-use figure as a starting point, not a ceiling.

If you can get the previous tenants' annual kWh figures, use those instead. That will beat any national estimate.

What bills do students need to pay?

The usual student utility bills are:

Gas and electricity

You are responsible from the start of the tenancy, even if you have not contacted the existing supplier yet. Take opening meter readings immediately. You can compare tariffs and payment types, but check unit rates, standing charges, exit fees and the contract end date rather than assuming a fixed deal or the default tariff must be cheapest.

Gas heating versus electric heating

With gas central heating, a boiler normally uses gas for the radiators and hot water, while electricity powers lights, appliances and the boiler controls. An electric-only property also puts heating and hot water onto the electricity bill. It could use storage heaters, an immersion heater, direct electric panels or a heat pump, and each system uses electricity differently.

At the July 2026 Ofgem averages, electricity costs more per kWh than gas, but unit rates alone do not tell you the final heating cost. Insulation, controls and heating efficiency matter too. Before signing a tenancy, ask what heats the rooms and water, check the property's EPC and request the previous tenants' annual gas and electricity use. Do not budget an all-electric home using our gas-heated example.

Economy 7 and dual-rate electricity tariffs

Economy 7 charges a cheaper electricity rate during a seven-hour off-peak period and a more expensive rate at other times. It is most likely to suit a property with storage heaters or an immersion heater that charges overnight. If most electricity is used during the day, a single-rate tariff may work out cheaper.

The off-peak window is usually overnight, but its hours depend on the supplier, tariff and location, and may move when the clocks change. The property also needs a dual-rate meter or compatible smart meter that records peak and off-peak use separately. Photograph and submit both readings on move-in day, and ask the supplier which is day and night if the displays only say Rate 1 and Rate 2.

When comparing an Economy 7 tariff, check:

• the peak and off-peak unit rates
• the exact off-peak hours
• the daily standing charge
• how much electricity the property used on each register last year
• whether the storage heaters and hot-water timer are set to charge off-peak
• whether a new supplier can support the meter and heating setup

Some older electric-heating homes have a Radio Teleswitch Service meter. Ofgem says the RTS signal is being switched off in phases. If the meter or a nearby box is labelled RTS, Radio Teleswitch or Dynamically Teleswitched, contact the supplier for a suitable replacement so the heating and hot water are not disrupted.

Water and sewerage

In England and Wales, the regional supplier is fixed, so you cannot switch. Check whether water is already included in your rent and whether the property is metered. The £639 figure is a national household average, not the price every house pays.

Broadband

Compare the total contract cost, not just the opening monthly price. Check speed, setup fees, annual rises and whether the minimum term runs beyond your tenancy. TV Licence

A colour licence costs £180 from 1 April 2026. You need one to watch or record live TV on any channel or service, or to use BBC iPlayer. You do not need one only to watch on-demand services such as Netflix or Disney+, on-demand programmes on services such as Channel 4 or Prime Video, or ordinary YouTube videos.

Council tax

A household made up only of qualifying full-time students is normally exempt, but do not assume the council already knows. Tell the council and provide any evidence it requests. Mixed student and non-student households can be treated differently.

Contents insurance

This is optional and is not included in our cost model. Check whether a parent's policy already covers belongings away from home before buying another policy.

Student bills package comparison

A student bills package combines some or all of your utilities into one payment. The provider sets up or manages the supplier accounts and usually collects a separate payment from each housemate.

The catch is that most providers only reveal the real price after you enter the address, tenancy dates, number of housemates and chosen services. That makes a league table of headline prices look more certain than the evidence allows.

Here is what the providers publicly state as of 28 July 2026:

Separate Direct Debits are useful, but do not treat the phrase "everyone pays their own share" as a complete explanation of liability. Read the provider's current contract to see what happens if someone does not join, misses a payment or leaves the tenancy.

What is the cheapest student bills package?

There is no defensible UK-wide winner without getting address-specific quotes.

Epic is the only provider in this shortlist currently showing a usable headline price for a full energy, water and broadband package: its Essentials package starts from £20 per person, per week. That makes Epic the most transparent public starting point in this comparison, not automatically the cheapest final quote.

To find the cheapest package for your house:

1. Choose exactly the same services with each provider.
2. Use the same address, housemate count and tenancy dates.
3. Compare the full-tenancy total, not only the weekly number.
4. Check whether energy is metered, capped or genuinely uncapped.
5. Check fees and what happens if a housemate leaves.

The simplest comparison formula is:

Package price per person per week x number of housemates x tenancy weeks

Compare that total with realistic DIY energy use, the water bill and an actual broadband quote.

Are student bills packages cheaper than arranging bills yourself?

Usually not in a normally heated house, but it depends on the quote and how much energy you use.

Here is a worked example for a five-person house. We use the high Ofgem consumption profile, Water UK's average and the £30 monthly broadband allowance. That gives a DIY household total of about £3,332 a year, or £666 per person. It works out at approximately £12.82 per person, per week.

Epic's Essentials headline starts from £20 per person, per week. Annualised over 52 weeks, that is £1,040 each.

In that example, the package costs about 56% more.

That is not proof that every package will be 56% more expensive. The Epic figure is a "from" price, the real quote may differ and the package includes unlimited energy. DIY customers pay for every extra kWh, while an uncapped provider takes on that usage risk. The package is therefore closer to utilities plus admin plus a form of price certainty.

If your house is efficient and careful, DIY is likely to look better. If it is freezing, poorly insulated and occupied all day, the gap may narrow. Get the actual quote and run both numbers.

Bills included or paying separately: which is better?

Choose DIY if keeping the cost down matters most. You keep control of the suppliers, can switch when it suits the household and avoid a management premium. It works best when the group is organised and can keep a bills buffer for winter.

Choose a package if predictability matters most. One fixed payment and uncapped energy can be valuable if the household would rather pay more than argue about heating or face a large catch-up bill.

Choose a package cautiously if housemate payment risk is the main reason. Separate collections can reduce the monthly chasing, but only the provider's contract can tell you whether one person's non-payment can affect everyone else.

If a landlord offers bills-included rent, do the same calculation. Multiply the weekly bills supplement by the number of tenants and tenancy weeks, then compare it with your own household estimate. Also read the fair-usage and overuse clauses.

How to split student bills fairly

If you arrange the bills yourselves, agree the system before the first payment is due.

One person can manage each account while everyone transfers a monthly contribution by standing order. A free bill-splitting app can keep a running record when different people manage different services.

Understand the legal side before choosing account names. Citizens Advice explains that:

• if only one person's name is on a utility account, that person is legally responsible for the whole bill
• if the account is in everyone's names, the supplier can pursue any named person for outstanding debt, even if that person has already paid their agreed share

Adding names therefore spreads exposure; it does not neatly divide the debt into equal legal shares.

A simple written house agreement will not override the supplier's contract, but it can record how you have agreed to split payments and what happens if someone leaves.

Be careful with joint bank accounts too. Opening one creates a financial association between the account holders. Experian says lenders may consider an associate's credit history when deciding whether to approve future borrowing. Sharing an address alone does not create that link.

How to reduce student bills in 2026

Start with evidence, not estimates

Photograph the gas, electricity and water meters on move-in day and submit the readings. If the electricity meter has more than one register, record every reading and ask the supplier to confirm which is peak and off-peak. Keep the photos. Ask the landlord or previous tenants for annual kWh usage if it is available.

Compare energy tariffs properly

Compare unit rates, standing charges, payment type, exit fees and the full remaining tenancy period. A fixed tariff buys certainty, but it can be above or below future price-cap rates. For Economy 7 or another time-of-use tariff, compare both rates and estimate how much electricity the household will genuinely use off-peak. Citizens Advice recommends checking that a new supplier and tariff will work with a time-of-use meter. Match broadband to the tenancy

A cheap 18 or 24-month contract can cost more overall if the household leaves after 12 months. Include setup fees and scheduled price rises in the calculation.

Only buy a TV Licence if the household needs one

Live TV and BBC iPlayer require a licence. On-demand Netflix, Disney+ and similar services do not. Check your tenancy arrangement because one licence may not cover every separately rented room.

Student bills moving-in checklist

1. Photograph every opening meter reading, including both registers on a dual-rate meter, and submit them to the supplier.
2. Find the current gas and electricity supplier, confirm the meter and tariff type, and open the new account from the tenancy start date.
3. Check the tenancy agreement for any utilities already included in the rent.
4. Tell the local council that the household is made up of students and complete its exemption process.
5. Order broadband early and make sure the minimum term suits the tenancy.
6. Get like-for-like package quotes and compare their full-tenancy totals with the DIY estimate.
7. Decide whose names will be on each account after checking the supplier's liability terms.
8. Set up standing orders or separate payments before the first bill arrives.
9. Check whether the household needs a TV Licence and whether one licence covers the tenancy.
10. Review the energy tariff when Ofgem publishes the next price-cap rates.

Sort those ten and the scariest thing left in the house should be the washing-up rota.

When and where is the FIFA World Cup 2026?

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will begin on Thursday, 11 June 2026, with the opening match in Mexico City, where Mexico will face South Africa. The tournament will then run until Sunday, 19 July 2026, which is when the final takes place in New York/New Jersey.

Unlike previous World Cups, the 2026 tournament will host 48 teams and be spread across three host countries: the USA, Canada and Mexico. That makes it a very different trip for travelling fans, especially those flying from the UK. Instead of planning around one country or a small group of nearby cities, fans will need to think carefully about which host cities they want to visit, how far apart matches are, and how much internal travel could add to the total cost.

The tournament will also be bigger than ever, with 104 matches taking place across 16 host cities. That means more fixtures to choose from, but also more decisions to make about flights, hotels, tickets, and spending money. A fan staying in one city for a single match, for example, could have a very different budget from someone trying to follow England through the group stage or travel between knockout games.

For that reason, it is worth treating the 2026 World Cup as a full travel plan rather than just a football ticket purchase. Before booking, fans should look to compare host cities, check flight routes, research hotel availability, understand ticket sales and build in everyday costs such as food, local transport, mobile data and travel insurance.

Which cities are hosting World Cup 2026 matches?

The United States, Canada, and Mexico will share hosting duties during the World Cup this year. In the US, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle will welcome fans and teams from around the world, whilst matches in Canada will take place in Toronto and Vancouver. Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey complete the list of host cities in Mexico.

To address issues such as fan budgets, player welfare and logistical pressures, FIFA have divided the 16 cities into three regional ‘clusters’ - Western, Central and Eastern. As a result, most teams will play all three of their group stage matches within one of these sections, though this set-up will end once the knockout rounds begin.

After the round of 16, the United States will host all remaining matches from the quarterfinals onward. This includes the semifinals in Atlanta and Dallas, culminating with the final in New York/New Jersey.

Not only is Canada hosting the Men’s World Cup for the first time, but six US cities are also making their debuts. Atlanta, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, Philadelphia, and Seattle are all first-time hosts, even though the US previously held the tournament back in 1994.

What is the World Cup 2026 Match Schedule?

The FIFA World Cup 2026 runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026, with matches taking place across the USA, Canada and Mexico. It will be the biggest World Cup so far, with 48 countries, 12 groups of four and 104 matches.

The bigger format is the reason a new Round of 32 has been added. In previous tournaments, 32 teams took part, and the knockout stage started with the last 16. For 2026, more countries are involved, so more teams will qualify from the group stage. The top two teams from each group, plus the best third-placed teams, will move into a new 32-team knockout round before the last 16.

This change means more nations get the chance to play at the World Cup, including countries that may have previously struggled to qualify under the old 32-team format. It also means fans get more matches, more storylines and a longer tournament, with the group stage ending on 27 June before the knockout rounds begin.

England Group L fixtures and UK kick-off times

England have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama. Their group-stage matches will be played across Dallas, Boston and New York/New Jersey.

What stadiums are being used in the 2026 World Cup?

104 matches will be played across 16 stadiums this summer, as the United States, Mexico and Canada host the largest ever World Cup tournament. Most venues will host anywhere from six to nine matches each, instead of the three to four games in previous editions.

Even though the 2026 World Cup is the largest ever in terms of participating teams, it does not hold the record for the most venues ever used in a single tournament. It places third, behind South Korea and Japan in 2002 and Spain in 1982.

Despite that, because most venues are either NFL stadiums or major pre-existing grounds in Mexico and Canada, the average capacity will be among the highest in tournament history, with 68,500 fans expected per game.

Know the Venue - Stadium Identity Guide

Whether you’ve secured tickets already or are planning to purchase them last-minute, it’s important to understand FIFA’s ‘Clean Venue’ policy, which prohibits the use of corporate-sponsored names in all stadiums during the tournament to safeguard multi-million-dollar official partnerships. Instead, most of the venues will be rebranded with neutral, geographic names for the duration.

As such, iconic stadiums like MetLife Stadium will simply be known as the New York New Jersey Stadium, and have all branding stripped back and corporate signage covered up. For some travelling fans, this could be confusing, as many of the new names might not match up to navigation apps or GPS systems, and locals might not be aware that such changes have taken place.

Here’s our breakdown of all the stadium name changes:

Interestingly, whilst 15 of the 16 stadiums have undergone corporate identity wipes, Vancouver’s BC Place has remained largely the same. This is because ‘BC’ stands for ‘British Columbia’, making the name civic and geographical rather than commercial. FIFA have added ‘Vancouver’ to the end of the venue name to ensure uniformity across the tournament.

Stadium names aren’t the only changes. Significant infrastructure upgrades have taken place, with playing surfaces changed, pitch sizes altered, and mass capacities increased. Because FIFA don’t allow artificial turf pitches, eight of the 16 stadiums have had to completely change their playing surfaces and, in many cases, increase the width of their stadium floors, as football pitches are much wider than NFL pitches.

How much does it cost to go to the World Cup 2026?

The cost of attending this year’s World Cup depends heavily on your travel style, specifically your flight selection, lodging quality and overall trip duration. When booked in advance, a trip to watch England at the tournament, for example, could have cost anywhere from £1,200 to north of £20,000. For those booking late, prices will be significantly higher due to supply-and-demand inflation.

Three-Tier Overview

We’ve looked at three different scenarios: a one-game trip, a medium-length trip (for the group-stage matches only), and a full trip covering every single England match up to the final.

Taking data and prices from Skyscanner, it’s clear to see that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all event to plan for. Those who booked early, for example, stand to save a lot more than those who have left it until the last minute, highlighting the price of hesitation.

According to FootballGroundGuide, a single-game trip, when booked in advance, could have cost anywhere between £1,245 and £1,723. However, if you were to try to book today, you could end up spending more than £3,750 due to premium prices and the scarcity of match tickets.

A group-stage tour for all three England matches, which would take around 12-14 days to complete, could have been arranged for as little as £3,435 if planned and booked in advance. The paradox here is that a pre-planned trip to watch all three group-stage matches could have cost roughly as much as a last-minute dash to catch one game.

If you’re looking to enjoy the full 5-week tournament experience and attend every game all the way to the final, you’ll be looking at spending at least £13,000. Return flights and lodgings aside, the web of internal domestic flights and FIFA’s steep ticketing structure certainly push this length of trip to the top end of the financial spectrum. Indeed, according to Goal.com, a single ticket for the World Cup final could cost anywhere between £1,510 and £5,860, depending on fluctuation and dynamic pricing.

Regardless of whether you choose to go for one game or for the full tournament experience, there are several essentials you’ll need to make sure you organise before you leave. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, all UK citizens will need to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) through the US Customs and Border Protection website. Without an approved ESTA, you will not gain entry to the United States.

Alongside an ESTA, travellers should take out comprehensive travel insurance and consider other extras such as eSIMs, portable power banks and spare cash for tipping.

How much are World Cup 2026 tickets and how can fans buy safely?

Tickets for this year’s edition of the World Cup aren’t cheap, whichever way you look at it. There are four different categories for tickets: Category 1 is for prime seating, Category 2 is for corners and lower zones, Category 3 is for upper bowls, and Category 4 - which is the cheapest - is strictly reserved for host-country residents and official national supporter clubs.

When booked through official national supporters' clubs, such as the England Supporters' Travel Club (ESTC), fans could secure Category 4 tickets for around £45-£47 for group-stage matches.

In contrast, general public Category 3 tickets, which are the next-cheapest baseline available to the average fan, were listed at around £104 at face value, and are now commanding considerably more on the resale market.

As FIFA has implemented dynamic pricing into their ticketing model for the first time, rates are expected to fluctuate in line with demand. This becomes clear as the tournament progresses to the knockout stages, with prices set to increase even more. By the time the semi-finals arrive, Category 3 tickets will start from around £735 each, whilst premium Category 1 seating could fetch over £2,400.

For the final in New York, prices for Category 1 seats could go for as much as £6,489, with the cheapest (outside of the official supporters clubs) starting from over £1,600. Prices are correct at the time of writing.

Fan Fact: Dynamic Pricing is a system put in place to automatically alter ticket costs as demand and match importance rise throughout the tournament. Category 4 official supporters, however, are protected with locked-in, fixed rates.

Buying Tickets Safely

Navigating today’s market is increasingly challenging with ticket fraud at an all-time high. To avoid the risk of being scammed or having your ticket cancelled by FIFA, it is highly recommended to purchase World Cup tickets exclusively through official channels.

There are four main routes fans should consider: The Official FIFA Ticketing Portal, FIFA’s Resale Marketplace, On Location (FIFA’s official hospitality provider) and vetted Supporters’ Clubs. Here’s a breakdown:

Through the official FIFA Ticketing Portal, fans can pick up tickets on a first-come, first-served basis, and this system remains active throughout the entire tournament. This portal is also the home of the only authorised resale marketplace, where fans can legally sell and purchase tickets.

Fan Fact: FIFA World Cup tickets are digital only, meaning paper printouts or screenshots will not be accepted. If you sell a ticket through the official resale marketplace, the original barcode will be cancelled by FIFA, and they’ll issue a brand new digital ticket to the buyer.

On Location is the official hospitality provider for FIFA, offering ticket-inclusive premium packages that include everything from shared lounges to luxury suites. Available via FIFA's official website and authorised sales agents, these options represent the higher end of the price scale for fans trying to attend a match.

As mentioned above, members of official supporters' clubs, such as the ESTC, can obtain tickets via the club's official channels. This often represents the cheapest way to secure a ticket, and fans who earned enough 'caps' to qualify had the chance to get Category 4 tickets for around £45 - £47.

If you’re hunting for lower prices, chances are you’ll come across lots of tickets listed on secondary marketplaces. Whilst many of these platforms are perfectly legit, they are not official partners for the tournament and therefore cannot guarantee entry. Even if the tickets themselves are genuine, FIFA may still view the transaction as an unauthorised transfer and void the barcode inside the official app. The key here is to avoid risks and keep an eye out for fraudulent activity and possible scams.

Indeed, Lloyds Bank and the UK Home Office recently published data showing that there was a 36% rise year-on-year in football ticket scams, making sports fans the number one target for criminals. It also highlights that the average loss per victim is £215, and that 68% of these purchase scams come from social media and WhatsApp.

What are the travel requirements for attending the World Cup 2026 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico?

Unlike at the last two World Cups in Russia and Qatar, there is no unified immigration system for this tournament, meaning securing a match ticket does not automatically serve as a temporary visa. As such, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the regional clusters that your team will be playing in and which countries you’ll be visiting.

Because the UK is part of the U.S Visa Waiver Programme, tourists do not need a full visa to enter the United States. They do, however, require an approved ESTA, and these must be applied for online at least 72 hours before your scheduled flight. ESTAs currently cost around £30.00 when applied for through the official U.S Customs and Border Protection website, and are valid for two years from the issue date.

In contrast, entry into Canada is both simpler and cheaper. They use a digital screening system called an eTA - costing just £3.70 - which is strictly required for those entering the country by air. UK citizens choosing to drive from the U.S into Canada, however, will not require one, and can simply show their passport at the border instead.

Taking data from Booking.com and Skyscanner for June and July 2026, the cheapest host cities appear to be Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Houston. Flights range from £550 - £750 each, whilst accommodation could cost anywhere from £700 to well over £1,000 total for a seven-night stay. With food, daily travel and other experiences thrown in, fans should expect to spend from £1,040 to over £1,625 each.

Mid-Tier

Host cities Atlanta, Dallas, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Toronto make up the ‘mid-tier’ bracket, with flights from the UK starting at around £600 each. Fans can expect to book accommodation during the tournament for £1,120 - £1,820 for seven nights total, although matchday price spikes of 20% - 30% are possible. In total, a mid-tier trip will likely cost between £1,560 and £2,425 each.

Priciest Tier

Premium destinations among the host cities include New York, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, Boston and San Francisco. Peak summer demand almost certainly guarantees premium pricing, with flights potentially costing more than £1,100 per person. Hotels and short-term rentals will also see rising rates, reaching £3,850 or more total for a week’s stay.

In this tier, travellers are looking at spending anywhere between £2,295 and £4,215+ each (meaning a total combined budget of £4,590 to £8,430+ for two fans travelling together). The weaker exchange rate for UK tourists, combined with local taxes and tipping culture, makes daily spending nearly three times more expensive than it is in the cheapest tier.

Rail Pockets

Intercity rail travel in the US is quite limited, and shouldn't be relied on as a viable option when travelling between host cities. That being said, it does work in two pockets.

Amtrak runs corridors in the east and the west regions, connecting New York to Philadelphia and Boston, and Seattle to Vancouver, respectively. In fact, they have a dedicated World Cup page on their website to help fans plan their journey.

For journeys such as Miami to Atlanta or Dallas to Kansas City, however, train travel simply won’t be an option. Flying is your best bet in these scenarios, despite not necessarily being budget-friendly.

Despite being the most convenient, it's also the most expensive once you take into account peak summer fees and dynamic pricing. Ways to save in this instance are to stick to one airline and book multi-city tickets rather than stringing together random one-way tickets.

Budget Buses

Coach and bus travel represents the budget backup option for transport, but is certainly more suited when travelling within a cluster. For trips from New York to Philadelphia or Dallas to Houston, for example, FlixBus, MegaBus and Greyhound are all reputable options to consider.

Whilst bus tickets are much cheaper than flying, traffic during the summer can be unpredictable and coach journeys on match day itself should be avoided to remove any risk of being late for kick-off or missing the game entirely.

Car Hire Freedom

Some of the host stadiums are largely car-dependent, meaning car rental or ride-sharing is required. Having a car in cities such as Los Angeles, Miami and Dallas offers greater freedom on match day and throughout your stay.

There’s a golden rule when renting a car in the US that people often forget - you cannot drive a US rental car across the border into Mexico! Hire companies prohibit it and any insurance becomes completely invalid if you do decide to cross.

Door-to-Door Times

It’s often overlooked, but when planning your route it's important not to calculate your itinerary based on flight durations alone. A four-hour flight, for example, will always take much longer once you factor in traffic to and from the airport, security queues, baggage drops and boarding windows.

The Shock Cost of Staying Cool 

According to the findings, the vast majority of the nation saw their usual outgoings skyrocket during June’s heatwave. Brits scrambled to buy fans, paddling pools, and extra refreshments to beat the heat. 

• 52% of households admitted to spending extra money as a direct result of the June heatwave.
• Just over one fifth (21%) blew over £50 on heatwave essentials.
• Around 20% of hard-pressed Brits estimate they splashed out more than £100 just to stay cool.

'Heatwave Anxiety' Sweeps the Nation 

It isn't just our bank balances suffering; the unpredictable British weather is taking a massive toll on the nation's peace of mind.

A staggering 56% of UK adults confess they now suffer from anxiety at the thought of more frequent or severe heatwaves hitting the country. Within that group, 17% describe themselves as "very anxious" about future weather extremes, while 39% are "somewhat anxious."

Finally, pay with a credit card if you can; this way, there is a chance you will get your money back if your purchase was a scam.
• Close your windows - Leave windows, blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day. This is generally between 11 am and 4 pm.
• Unplug ‘phantom’ heat sources - Electrical devices that generate heat, even in standby mode. Some of the biggest culprits are game consoles, desktop computers and chargers.
• Swap the oven for the microwave - Using the oven in a heatwave is a bad idea. It will heat your kitchen fast. If you need to cook, use the microwave or airfryer. This saves money too.

One honest note before we start. Nearly two thirds of UK adults believe loyalty cards exist to make shoppers spend more, not to reward them, according to our survey of the loyalty cards shoppers actually use. They're half right. Loyalty schemes used to change slowly. Not any more.

In the space of about a year, some of the UK's biggest retailers rewrote how their cards work. M&S relaunched Sparks with a digital wallet. Lidl replaced Coupon Plus with Lidl Plus Points. Waitrose added Little Treats monthly spend rewards. Iceland’s Bonus Card became part of the app-first Bonus Club.

The practical upshot: if you're reading a guide written before spring 2026, some of its advice may now be wrong in ways that cost money, from chasing a Lidl bakery freebie that no longer exists to relying on a loyalty perk that has been replaced, paused or moved into an app.

Each entry below reflects the current mechanics, app offers and point values as they exist in 2026, checked against current scheme information rather than outdated assumptions.

Boots Advantage Card: best flat-rate cashback on the high street

The Boots Advantage Card still pays the highest simple flat rate on the high street: 3 points per £1, with each point worth 1p when spent at Boots. That works out at a straight 3% back on eligible spending, before any app offers, promotions or personalised deals.

No mainstream supermarket points scheme comes close to that headline rate on ordinary spend.

The 2026 change to know about is that Boots says Advantage Card members continue to collect 3 points per £1 from May 2026, with more personalised offers on brands they know and love. That means the card now rewards people who check the app before shopping, rather than just relying on the headline points rate.

The two long-standing catches remain. First, points can only be spent at Boots. Second, you cannot part-pay with points, so you need enough points to cover the full item you want to buy. If something costs £12, you need at least 1,200 points. You cannot use 800 points and pay the rest by card.

Morrisons More Card: best for member pricing

Morrisons rewards you differently from every other supermarket in this list: 5 points for every eligible product you buy, not for every pound you spend.

Each Morrisons More point is worth 0.1p, because 5,000 More Points can be converted into a £5 More Card Fiver. That means every eligible product in your basket earns half a penny back, regardless of its price. Fill a trolley with fifty cheaper everyday items and you'll earn more points than someone spending the same amount on ten premium products.

The base points are modest, but the real value sits in More Card Prices, the member-only prices on selected products. That's not just marketing spin either. The Competition and Markets Authority reviewed around 50,000 loyalty-priced grocery products and found that most offered genuine savings against the usual price, with average savings of 17% to 25% at the supermarkets it examined.

That matters because the More Card is not really about getting rich from points. It is about unlocking lower prices on the things you were already going to buy.

The simplest scheme on this list, and the one with the most satisfying payoff.

Spend £7 or more in a day directly with Nando's, whether eating in, collecting or ordering delivery through the Nando's website or app, and you earn one Chilli. Three Chillies gets you a Green Reward, six gets you an Orange Reward, and ten gets you a Red Reward.

In plain English, that means a starter or quarter chicken after three qualifying visits, a bigger main-style reward after six, and the top-tier reward after ten. For a couple who visit monthly, that's free food landing a few times a year for doing nothing differently.

The catch that trips most people up: orders through Deliveroo, Just Eat or Uber Eats do not count. You need to order directly with Nando's to collect Chillies. Rewards also expire after one year, so this is not a scheme to save up and forget about.

Sparks was rebuilt from the ground up on 15 April 2026, and it now works nothing like the scheme most older guides describe.

Instead of traditional points or prize draws, you activate personalised offers in the M&S app, spend against them, and money lands in a digital Sparks wallet to spend at M&S. In other words: pounds, not points.

That makes Sparks one of the most interesting loyalty schemes in the UK, but also one of the easiest to misunderstand. It does not behave like Boots, Tesco or Nectar. There is no simple “spend £1, get X points” rate. The value comes from activating the right offers before you shop.

Per activated offer, Sparks can pay a better rate than a normal supermarket points card. The trade-off is that it only pays on the specific spending covered by your offers. Ignore the app and you may earn nothing beyond occasional perks such as birthday treats or coffee stamps.

This is a scheme that rewards people who check their phone before shopping, not people who simply spend the most.

My Waitrose does not do points at all, which is exactly why it is underrated.

Instead you get instant perks: a free daily hot drink in store when you bring a reusable cup, personalised money-off vouchers, and Little Treats rewards for passing monthly spend thresholds. Waitrose says a Little Treat voucher appears when you spend £50 in a month, another at £100, and a third at £250.

Add it up and a regular shopper can claw back a genuinely useful amount without thinking about point values, voucher conversions or partner rewards. The free coffee alone can be worth more than the base points from some supermarket schemes if you use it often.

The quirk to know: personalised vouchers are based on your shopping history, so the scheme usually gets better after a few weeks of scanning. New members should not judge it on week one.

Lidl Plus: best supermarket points app

If you last looked at Lidl Plus before May 2026, forget what you know.

Coupon Plus is no longer available in the Lidl Plus app and has been replaced by Lidl Plus Points. In its place is Lidl Plus Points: 1 point per £1 spent, redeemable for selected rewards such as free products or money-off coupons.

That is a cleaner system, but it also means the value depends on how you redeem. Money off your shop is the benchmark to beat. Choosing free products only makes sense when the product's normal price gives you better value than the money-off option.

Alongside points, Lidl Plus still gives you weekly coupons, app-only prices, scratchcards and digital receipts. That mix matters because Lidl's biggest saving is still often the shelf price, not the loyalty scheme. The card is there to squeeze more from a shop that may already be cheap.

Caffè Nero's loyalty card is one of the most generous coffee schemes on the high street because it keeps things simple: collect stamps on handmade drinks and work towards a free drink.

The classic deal is the one regulars know well: you receive a stamp for each handmade drink, and when you collect nine stamps, your next handmade drink is free. The free drink can be especially valuable if you usually go for larger or pricier drinks rather than a basic espresso.

Compared with rival schemes where points expire quickly, free drinks are capped or rewards are harder to understand, Nero's stamp-card setup is refreshingly easy. The paper card still works for some customers, but the app tracks stamps automatically and is harder to lose.

The important small print is that not everything earns stamps. Food, bottled drinks and some non-handmade drinks may not count. If you are buying coffee regularly, though, the return is hard to beat.

Best for: anyone buying more than a couple of coffees a week.
Effective return: roughly every 10th qualifying drink free, or around 10% to 11% reward value depending on how you calculate it.

Club Vue: best cinema rewards scheme

Club Vue is the only cinema scheme in our top eight, and it has a simple free-ticket mechanic.

Club Vue lives in the Vue app and gives you one stamp for each screening you book through the app. Collect ten stamps and you unlock one free film ticket.

The key detail is that stamps are earned through app bookings for screenings, and the stamp book is visible in the Club Vue app. That means regular cinema-goers who already book through the app will benefit naturally, while anyone booking elsewhere should not assume they are earning stamps.

Beyond the stamps, Club Vue is useful because it sits inside the app where many Vue customers already book. If you go to the cinema monthly, the free-ticket cycle is easy to understand and easy to use.

Why Tesco Clubcard and Nectar are not in our top eight

This is the bit that needs saying clearly: Tesco Clubcard and Nectar are not bad schemes. In fact, they are two of the most-used loyalty cards in the UK.

In our YouGov survey, Tesco Clubcard was the most-used loyalty scheme among the people who held it, followed by Nectar. That makes sense. Clubcard Prices and Nectar Prices can be genuinely useful, and both schemes are attached to retailers where millions of people already shop.

So why are they not in the top eight here?

Because this ranking is not a popularity contest. It is about which schemes give the clearest, most useful return for specific types of shopper in 2026.

Tesco Clubcard and Nectar are still worth having if you already shop at Tesco or Sainsbury's. They are especially useful for member pricing. But on basic points value, they are not as strong as Boots. On restaurant rewards, they do not beat Nando's. On coffee, they do not beat Caffè Nero. On app-based supermarket points, Lidl Plus is currently more interesting. And on instant perks, Waitrose has a clearer non-points offer.

The short version: get Clubcard and Nectar if you shop there anyway. Just do not assume they are automatically the best loyalty cards in the UK because they are the biggest.

The loyalty cards Brits actually use most

Rankings are one thing. Behaviour is another.

When we asked 2,186 UK adults through YouGov in October 2025 which loyalty scheme they use most often, supermarkets dominated. which loyalty scheme they use most often, supermarkets dominated. Tesco Clubcard was the clear leader among Clubcard holders, followed by Nectar and Lidl Plus. Morrisons More and Asda Rewards also featured strongly, while the most-used scheme outside the supermarkets was the Boots Advantage Card.

That snapshot was taken before the latest wave of loyalty scheme changes, so it shows which cards shoppers were already using before several major schemes were rebuilt. With Sparks relaunched and Lidl Plus moving to points, it is worth reviewing whether the cards people carry are still the ones that give them the best value.

The same research found nearly two thirds of UK adults believe loyalty cards are there to make shoppers spend more rather than reward them. That scepticism is healthy, and it is why every scheme above is judged on what it returns on your normal spending, not on what it tempts you to add to the basket.

Are loyalty cards worth it, or just a trick to make you spend more?

Both, depending on how you use them.

On the genuine-savings question, the evidence is stronger than many people expect. The Competition and Markets Authority spent a year analysing around 50,000 loyalty-priced grocery products and found that 92% of loyalty prices offered genuine savings against the usual price. It also found very little evidence that supermarkets were inflating regular prices just to make member deals look better.

The CMA found average savings of 17% to 25% on loyalty-priced products at the five supermarkets it examined: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Co-op and Morrisons.

That does not mean every loyalty price is brilliant. The CMA also warned that a loyalty price is not always the cheapest price available anywhere. Aldi or Lidl may still be cheaper than a member price at another supermarket. A branded item with a loyalty discount may still cost more than a supermarket own-brand version.

That matches our advice exactly. Sign up for the free schemes where you already shop, scan every time, and never let points decide where your money goes. Loyalty cards reward loyalty. They do not magically make a shop cheap.

Which loyalty card should you get first?

If you only pick one, match it to where your money already goes.

Heavy Boots shoppers should start with the Advantage Card, because a flat 3% is the best baseline rate going. If your weekly shop is Morrisons, the More Card earns modest points but can unlock useful member pricing. If you shop at Lidl, Lidl Plus is worth having for points, coupons and app-only extras. If you shop at M&S, Sparks is worth it only if you will actually activate the offers.

If your loyalty spending is more coffee, chicken and cinema than weekly food shops, the smaller schemes can be better. Caffè Nero, Nando's and Club Vue all pay back a bigger share of small, repeated spending than many supermarket points cards.

There's no harm in holding several. Every card on this list is free, and the only scheme that costs you anything is the one that talks you into a basket you did not need.

With Plus Silver costing from just £3.49/month, by your second order, you'll have saved money on delivery fees alone. You just need to make sure you're hitting the minimum spend thresholds to be eligible for free delivery.

The Plus Gold subscription option costs from £4.99/month (prices checked 21/07/2026), meaning it's worth joining if you order 4 times or more per month.

However, if you live alone and you don't hit the minimum spend threshold for free delivery, you'll end up paying the subscription fees plus the delivery fees. Additionally, if you're an avid user of the likes of Just Eat and Uber Eats as well, it's not worth paying for Deliveroo Plus.
