UK parents are facing a significant financial squeeze ahead of the new school term, with the annual cost of school uniforms surging by almost 30% in just one year, according to new research from money-saving site MyVoucherCodes.

The nationwide study reveals that the average yearly spend has climbed to £141.15 in 2026, up from £108.59 in 2025. The £32.56 increase per child will further strain family finances.

And the spending doesn’t end when the school gates open in September. More than half of parents (57.9%) say they will have to spend even more on uniforms over the rest of the year, anticipating an average additional expenditure of £129.09 to cover replacements, growth spurts, and seasonal changes.

Strict school policies are driving these costs, with 73% of parents still forced to buy expensive branded uniforms despite government guidance. When it comes to individual items, coats and shoes are hitting pockets the hardest.

To combat the rising prices, parents are actively looking for ways to cut costs. Is H&M Membership Free? Core and Plus Levels Explained

H&M membership is completely free to join, and there's no paid version. It's a digital loyalty scheme that replaced the old H&M Club, and it works both online and in UK stores through your account or the H&M app. You need to be at least 16, and your membership only works in the country you signed up in, so points earned on a shopping trip abroad won't count.

There are two levels. Everyone starts on Core, and once you earn 300 points within a membership year you're automatically bumped up to Plus, which is also free. More on what Plus actually adds further down.

How H&M Points Work: The 2025 Devaluation

You earn 1 point for every £1 you spend, online or in store, as long as you're signed in or scan your member ID at the till. Gift card purchases don't earn points.

Here's the bit most articles still get wrong. Since 1 October 2025, you need 150 points to unlock a £3 bonus voucher. It used to be 100 points. That's a real cut: the scheme went from giving you roughly 3% back to 2% back, a change H&M framed as evolving the programme but which simply means you spend £50 more for the same reward. Plenty of voucher and loyalty guides online still quote the old 100-point rate, so if you've been wondering why your voucher is taking longer to arrive, that's why.

You can also earn points without spending:

• 20 points for completing your profile
• 20 points for dropping a bag of unwanted clothes into H&M's Garment Collecting service, which also gets you a £5 voucher to use on a £25+ spend
• 3 points for bringing your own bag in store
• 50 points for every friend you refer who places a first order

Calculating the Real Financial Value of H&M Rewards

This is the maths the sign-up page won't do for you. At 1 point per £1 and £3 back per 150 points, the points side of the scheme returns 2p for every £1 you spend.

Spend £150 a year at H&M and you'll earn one £3 voucher. Spend £300 and you'll get £6 back and hit Plus status. A serious H&M shopper putting £600 a year through the till collects £12 in vouchers. Useful, but hardly life changing.

The real value sits in the fixed perks, not the points. The 10% welcome offer on your first order (a minimum spend applies) is worth £5 on a £50 basket, more than a casual shopper earns in points all year. The 25% birthday discount on one item can beat that again if you save it for a coat rather than a T-shirt. Members also get free standard delivery on orders over £40, which saves the usual £3.99 fee, and H&M waives its £1.99 postal return charge for members too. If you order and return regularly, those delivery and returns savings will quietly outstrip your points earnings.

So the honest summary: join for the welcome offer, the birthday discount and the delivery perks. Treat the points as a small bonus, not a reason to shop.

How to Join the H&M Loyalty Scheme & Get Free Points

Signing up takes about a minute on H&M's membership page or in the H&M app. You just need an email address and your date of birth. Two things worth doing straight away: complete your profile for the easy 20 points, and add your birthday so the 25% birthday reward actually triggers.

If you shop in store, download the app. Your member ID lives there, and points are only added when it's scanned at the till. Forgot to scan? Take your receipt back to the same store with your member ID showing and staff can add the points manually.

H&M Plus Status: 300-Point Requirements & Benefits

Earn 300 points within a membership year and you're upgraded to Plus automatically, at no cost. The headline benefits are a 15% off welcome-to-Plus offer, free standard delivery with no minimum spend, early access to selected drops and collections, and invites to Plus-only experiences and offers.

Once you reach Plus, you keep the status for the rest of the current membership year plus the entire following year, so one good shopping year buys you two years of perks. The 15% Plus welcome offer is the one to plan around: saved for a £100 basket, it's worth £15, which is more than the vouchers from the 300 points that earned you the tier in the first place.

H&M Reward Rules: Expiry Dates, Return Policies, and Tills

This is where the scheme claws back what it gives, so it's worth knowing the rules cold.

Points expire after 12 months. Sitting on 140 points and planning to shop "at some point"? If the clock runs out, they vanish.

Vouchers expire after 6 months and take around 30 days to land after you cross the 150-point line, because H&M waits for the returns window to close first. Check the My Account page so a voucher doesn't quietly die in there.

Returns can wipe out your voucher. The £3 is spread evenly across every item in the order. Return something and you're refunded what you paid after the discount, and the voucher isn't reissued. If you're using a voucher, put it towards things you're sure you'll keep.

The in-store timer is real. Activating a voucher in the app starts a 15-minute countdown, so don't tap it while you're still queuing at the fitting rooms.

Mostly, yes, and this is where the membership starts earning its keep. Member bonus vouchers are applied from your account rather than the promo code box, so you can often use one alongside a separate offer at checkout. Any unused points and vouchers are deleted with it, so spend them first. If it's the emails that are bothering you rather than the membership, unsubscribe in your profile settings instead and keep the perks.

Verdict: Is an H&M Membership Worth It?

Yes, but for different reasons than H&M advertises. The points scheme is now one of the weaker ones on the high street at 2% back, and the October 2025 change made it stingier without most members noticing. Join anyway, because the welcome offer, the 25% birthday discount, free delivery over £40 and free postal returns cost you nothing and will save a regular shopper £20 to £30 a year before a single point is counted.

Where it isn't worth the effort is as a reason to shop. Spending an extra £50 to "finish off" a voucher earns you £1 of value, which is how loyalty schemes are designed to work in the retailer's favour, not yours. Sign up, take the freebies, stack a code on top, and let the points be a pleasant surprise rather than a plan. Elevate your fashion by building the ultimate capsule wardrobe. If you’re new to the concept, it’s essentially about creating a minimalist collection of clothing that can be worn together for most occasions.

Wearing a capsule wardrobe means you’ll be spending less money on buying new clothing, and spending more time on curating different outfits with the same pieces. Think jeans, tailored trousers, white t-shirts, knit jumpers, and accessories.

Capsule wardrobes are made based on your budget. Pinterest is a great place to start for inspiration.

Have a clear out

There’s never a bad time to have a clear-out. I try to do them every couple of months, and I find them not only super refreshing (perfect for a Spring reset!) but helpful for breathing new life into old items of clothing I’d long forgotten I had.

Set aside some time for a real sort-out. Go through your wardrobe and drawers and be critical. Anything you haven’t worn in the last season, get rid.

The perk of this is that if you opt to sell your clothing on a secondhand clothing app, you’ll have some spare money to put towards new pieces.

Make a digital wardrobe

One of my friends just did this, and it took some serious dedication, but honestly – now I want to do it too. Go through all of your clothing and photograph each item. Upload these to a free platform like Canva. Have one slide per clothing category (i.e. midi dresses, knitwear, boots, etc).

By the end of it, you’ll have a clear snapshot of everything you currently own. That way, when you look at new items you’re looking to buy, you can check 1) if you own anything that could be worn with it, and 2) whether you own anything too similar.

Set a limit

If, like me, you’ve got into the habit of spontaneously purchasing clothing only to never wear it, this tip is for you. Set yourself a limit for how much you’re allowed to spend on clothing per month.

Doing this encourages you to think more wisely before you spend. I found that when I did this, I took more time to look into my seasonal analysis (to find out what colours complemented my skin and hair tone), as well as my body shape and style, too.

Seasonal colour analysis

This has absolutely transformed my wardrobe and is one of my best tips when it comes to fashion. I’m sure you’ve seen the TikTok girlies getting their colour analysis done – but what if I told you that you could do it at home?

I uploaded a photo of myself in daylight to a hex-code website to give me the colour codes for my hair, eyes and skin. I then gave these codes to ChatGPT and asked it to give me a colour analysis.

I’m an autumn (shocker), which means I suit earthy tones and gold jewellery (not silver, like I’d worn most of my life!). After having this information, I made sure to buy clothing with this in mind, and my wardrobe is now full of garments I love and that look really good.

When the Ugg Tazmans went viral a few years back, I, like many others, was desperate to jump on the fashion trend for the winter. But unfortunately, we don’t all have £125 to drop on a pair of aesthetic slippers.

That's why it's handy knowing how to create a stylish wardrobe on a realistic budget. I did what I always do when I want to buy a luxury item - I looked for a dupe. Using a combination of TikTok and my own research, it didn’t take long before I found a few options – most were similar in style, but probably couldn’t pass as the real thing.

That was, until I stumbled upon the Ego Tazmin Aztecs, which were almost identical, and under £30.

If you’re anything like me and are easily influenced by the latest trends, then purchasing dupes can be a real saving grace for your bank account. In the past, I’ve compared a Stanley Cup dupe with the real thing and even tried a Longchamp tote bag dupe from Amazon, too.

The thing I’ve found with buying a more affordable dupe first is that if you don’t like it, or don’t use it, you’ve only spent a small amount of money on it (as opposed to £125). But if you love it, you know that it’s probably worth saving up for the real thing when your dupe needs replacing.

I’ve had my Ugg Tazman dupes for a few years now, and every time autumn comes around, I’m excited to wear them again. It’s taken me a while to properly break them in, and they’re definitely a little more stiff than the OGs.

The platform can make them tricky to walk in, though I think the same goes for the real Ugg Tazmans too, so it’s just a matter of practice. Next time, I’d consider getting the ones without the platform instead.

Low-income and struggling families can apply for a government grant of up to £200 to help pay towards school uniforms. To be eligible for this grant, families must be receiving benefits such as Universal Credit, free school meals and Child Tax Credits. MoneySavingExpert put together a full list of benefits families need to claim to be eligible for the grant and free school meals.

As well as school uniforms, the grant can be used to help pay towards sports kits, classroom essentials (pens, pencils and school bags), IT equipment (for when schools can't loan out equipment) and more. Gov.wales has compiled a list together for where the grant can help.

Some local councils require additional requirements to be eligible for the school uniform grant, including your child having to be in a specific year group or moving from primary school to secondary school.

The grant is running from 1 July 2025 until 31 May 2026, with some councils having a shorter deadline, like Tower Hamlets, which closes grant applications on 30 September 2025.

Not all councils are offering the same amount to families. Scotland offers a minimum of £120 (but the final amount may vary), and you can apply for the grant through My.gov.scot. Wales offers up to £200 per child to help with school uniform purchases, and you can apply for the grant via Gov.wales and navigate to your local council.

In Northern Ireland, you could have claimed up to £93.60 per child, but the deadline to apply was 25 July 2025.

The amount you can get from councils across England varies from £25 per child to £170 per child. Not every council in England is offering the grant, so it's worth checking with your local council.

The site, MoneySavingExpert, has put together a list of all the councils across England that are offering the grant.

More than four (44%) in 10 parents of children of school age splurge the most on shoes, while 16% shell out more on blazers, and 11% splash the cash the most on stationery.

In a sign of savvy shopping habits, the survey also revealed that 42% of parents now opt for second-hand clothes to help ease the financial burden.

A further 38% of parents admit they have bought plain clothing and attach the school logo separately, saving an impressive £44.43 on average over the course of the year.

When it comes to timings, the research shows that 12% of parents start back-to-school shopping in the first week of the summer holidays, while 14% wait until week three, and a very organised 13% start as early as April.

• Host or Join Uniform Swaps – Team up with other parents to trade gently-used uniforms and save money for everyone involved.
• Buy Second-Hand – Platforms like Vinted, Facebook Marketplace, and local uniform exchanges can be goldmines for high-quality pre-loved uniform items.
• Buy Plain, Add Logos – Purchase plain supermarket clothing and attach school logos yourself. Many parents report saving over £40 per child with this method.
• Shop Out of Peak Season – Start early to beat price hikes and low stock in August. Consider shopping during sales earlier in the year.

MoneySavingExpert.com has recently revealed a list containing 30 big-name retailers that have been misleading customers about what's legally allowed for their online returns. This has, in turn, made it seem that customers have less time to return the item than is stated under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

MSE has found that stores such as HMV, New Look, Boden, CEX and more state that they only accept returns (whether on sale items or regular-priced items) within 14 days of purchase. This is not true, and consumers have a legal right to return any item within 28 days from the date they receive the item, not from the date of purchase.

Customers have a legal right to notify a company within the first 14 days that they wish to return an item and then another 14 days to actually return the item, resulting in a total of 28 days.

When speaking on the topic, Martin Lewis said, "It's important for people to know that as a legal minimum… while you can only return goods bought in-store if they're faulty… buy something online and you have a no-fault right of return, provided it is not perishable or personalised. You have up to 14 days after delivery in which to tell the retailer you're sending an item back, and 14 days after you tell them to return it."

As a result of these findings, Martin Lewis promised that they will be, "forwarding our findings to Trading Standards and contacting each store to make sure it is aware of its breach and to ask how and when it'll correct them".

Since the 10th of July 2025, 14 stores have promised to fix this discrepancy on their respective websites. This list includes Caffe Nero, Early Learning Centre, ForbiddenPlant, Gruum, Guinness, HMV, Hotpod Yoga, Hush, New Look, Monsoon, PerfectDraft, Robert Dyas, Ryman and Selfridges. Hopefully, we see more stores follow suit in the future.

With thousands of "limited-time" offers flooding Amazon every Prime Day, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement and FOMO of it all. And just as easy to end up buying something that's not actually a bargain. But there's good news: With a bit of know-how, you can quickly spot which deals are the real thing and which ones are just clever marketing

Here's how to become a savvy Prime Day shopper in 2025, no regretful purchases, no fake discounts.

Check the Price History (It Only Takes a Minute)

One of the oldest tricks in the book is hiking a product's price a few weeks before Prime Day, then "slashing" it back to normal and calling it a deal, hoping that all customers will see is the big percentage off sign.

What to do: Before you buy, use a free price-tracking tool like CamelCamelCamel or PriceSpy. Just copy the Amazon link, paste it into the tool, and check the price graph. If you see the "deal" price has been normal for months or even higher in the last week, you know you're not really saving.

Pro Tip: Add the browser extension so you can see the price history chart directly on Amazon, with zero effort.

Watch for "Was/Now" Illusions

If a deal says "was £199, Now £99, don't trust it blindly. In the UK, retailers are meant to use the most recent regular price as the "was" price. But not everyone plays fair.

What to do: Scan the small print, or better yet, do a quick Google search for the same product. If it's selling for £99 at three other retailers, that "£100 off" isn't exclusive to Prime Day, it's just the going rate.

Compare Against Other Retailers

Prime Day isn't the only big sale around. Argos, Currys, John Lewis, Very, Ninja and even supermarkets run their own July discounts to compete.

What to do: Before you buy, pop the item into PriceSpy or Google Shopping to see if another retailer has quietly undercut Amazon. You'd be surprised how often this happens, especially on tech and homeware.

Beware of Lightning Deals Hype

"Only 3 left!" "Ends in 10 minutes!" The pressure is real, but don't panic. Buy. These are called "calls to action" and are tried-and-true methods by marketers, sellers, and writers everywhere, including myself.

What to do: Add the product to your wishlist or basket, and take a breath. Amazon's lightning deals often come back around, or the same product is available from another seller for less, minus the countdown clock.

Real Talk: If you're not sure you want it, it's probably not a must-have deal.

Check the Reviews - Especially the Recent Ones

Some brands pump up their products with reviews that are months (or years) old, before quietly downgrading the quality. Or worse, third-party sellers relist items that have nothing to do with the original product.

What to do: Scroll to the most recent reviews. Are people saying the product has changed, or that the deal wasn't as promised? Watch for verified purchase badges, and avoid items with loads of 5-star reviews posted very recently.

There are also websites such as thereviewindex, which aims to provide trusted and objective reviews for Amazon URLs you enter into the box, because some review sites have questionable reliability.

Don't Fall for "Exclusive" Prime Day Labels

Amazon LOVES to badge deals as "Prime Exclusive." But sometimes, those items are actually available to anyone, or the same "exclusive" price has been around for weeks. Some notable examples include Ninja, Shark and Anker.

What to do: If you're curious, try viewing the deal in an incognito tab (not logged into Prime). Sometimes you'll see it's not as exclusive or personalised as it looks. And again, compare elsewhere!

Double Check Amazon's Own Brand Value

Yes, Amazon Basics, Fire, and Echo products often have real discounts on Prime Day. But don't assume every Amazon brand deal is the best out there.

What to do: Still check the price history, and make sure you're getting the newest model, not an old version being cleared out.

Prime Day is a great time to grab real bargains, but only if you're clear-eyed and a bit sceptical. A genuine deal will stand up to a little digging. Trust your gut, do a quick check, and you'll come out of Prime day with only the wins and no buyer's remorse.

If you like a good bargain, there’s a fair chance you’ve already stumbled upon Temu. It’s a rapidly growing marketplace where you can browse everything from fashion and homeware to tech gadgets, often at surprisingly low prices. But with so many cheap products and deals, is Temu legit? Is it worth your trust? More importantly, is it safe to order from? In this article, we answer Temu and whether you can shop there without issues.

Who are Temu?

Temu is a fast-growing online marketplace run by the Chinese e-commerce company PDD Holdings, founded by entrepreneur Colin Huang. It specialises in heavily discounted consumer items, most of which are shipped directly from the makers in China and has become popular worldwide for its low price products.

My Experience with Temu

I am a homeowner and a lover of a good deal, so I was pretty early on the Temu bandwagon, and so far, my experience has been good. I buy from Temu monthly and have never had any issues outside of the odd product being low quality, but Temu refunded me, and all was well. So far, I've bought everything from photos and frames to mugs, blankets, pillowcases, a bathroom cabinet and even a small metal shed. However, I have noticed that sellers tend to exaggerate their deals and set the prices high, then discount them 80% to the regular price to make it look like a better deal. The products are usually still a decent deal, but it's a tactic people should be aware of.

Who owns Temu?

Temu was founded by entrepreneur Colin Huang and is owned by PDD Holdings, a legitimate company in Shanghai, China, own Temu.

Is Temu a safe site?

Yes, Temu protects its website with standard security methods. It uses HTTPS on every page and applies TLS and SSL encryption when handling transactions. This offers the same level of security that you would find with popular brands like eBay or Amazon. 

Are Temu products safe?

Yes, generally, though the quality of the items varies widely. It's best to check reviews beforehand to avoid lower-quality products. However, a Channel 4 documentary called “The Truth About Temu: Dispatches” discovered that some Temu products contained dangerous amounts of chemicals like lead and cadmium. In response, Temu said it would continue to enhance consumer protection and quickly take down any product listings under review. 

Does Temu steal your information?

Temu does not steal your information. Instead, Temu’s privacy policy states that they collect your personal information, such as your name, email address and purchase history. It may be shared with advertisers, service providers, and business partners outside the company. This is a widespread online practice as most stores, news outlets, and websites share data with 3rd parties. In my experience, one of the best ways to minimise your online footprint is to use Incogni. This subscription service automatically requests the deletion of your personal information stored by information brokers online, making your personal information safer. There is also no concrete evidence whatsoever that Temu has sold data to the Chinese government.

On the topic of emails, many people have accused Temu of sending out too many unwanted messages, something I can attest to. Reviews on Trustpilot mention that after making a purchase, there are many unwanted emails. I avoided this issue by unsubscribing from all marketing, and so far, I’ve not received any more emails.

Why is Temu so cheap?

Temu sells products directly from manufacturers in China to customers worldwide, eliminating any middlemen. This business model lets Temu sell many products at extremely low prices. This is known as dropshipping and is an increasingly popular method of selling online. TikTok Shop, AliExpress, Wish, and Shein also use it.

Another way Temu is cheaper is that it primarily sells unknown and unbranded items instead of known brands. Only a few tech companies, like Lenovo and Xiaomi, actually sell products on the site. A brand on the Temu website is verified if its listings show a blue checkmark.

Is Temu a scam?

 The official Temu app and website are not scams. However, due to their popularity worldwide, many scammers have pretended to be Temu through phishing emails. In general, when shopping on the internet, it is worth learning how to spot Phishing emails, scam texts, and websites for your safety. 

Are Temu coupons legit?

Their on-site/app coupons do work, and they offer them often enough to get savings. However, some prices are inflated by individual buyers to make the deal seem better, so take prices with a pinch of salt. This sales method is common, and Amazon is known for doing the same thing. 

Temu Reviews

However, despite my positive experiences, you should consider other customer reviews. Temu has mainly received mixed responses to reviews, with most complaints about delivery times and product quality.

As of January 2025, Temu has received a 2.5 on Trustpilot with 30,605 reviews.

On Reviews.io, as of January 2025, they have a considerably lower score, which should be considered. However, it should be noted many of these negative reviews are about delivery times, and Temu has several local warehouses in the UK which speed up delivery for selected products. 

Can I delete my Temu account?

Yes, if for any reason you wish to delete your Temu account, you can, and its relatively easy to do so via Temu’s account deletion page. Your account will take up to 7 days to be removed entirely from the Temu database. 

So, is Temu legit and safe to order from? Yes, it is; they have secure payments and use the same 3rd party data sharing methods as most other companies and I've used Temu many times. However, you may run into some delivery issues and some products may be a lower quality than you expected.

More than half of people who like to shop on Black Friday will be looking for Christmas presents at the annual money-saving shopping event this year.

Our recent survey revealed that when fans of the ever-growing discount day were asked what they spend the most on in the Black Friday deals, 56% of them said Christmas gifts.

Almost half (48%) of shoppers said electrical goods were on their shopping list, and an equal amount said they like to buy clothes and/or shoes. Beauty items were the next popular item, with 27% of shoppers saying they like to purchase beauty products.

The same survey revealed that a quarter (25%) of Brits will spend less on Christmas gifts this year than last year, and 15% said Christmas will be financially challenging.

As the cost of living crisis continues, 17% of people in the UK said they would be using discount days and websites to help pay for gifts and meals this year, and 14% said they’d be using credit cards to shop for Black Friday items. 

The survey also revealed that a quarter of Black Friday shoppers will spend up to £100 on the discount day, 24% will spend between £101- £200, 23% will spend between £201-£400 and 13% will spend more than £400.

These results show how Black Friday deals, plus money-saving vouchers and discounts are key for keeping costs down when buying Christmas gifts. It’s no surprise so many people wait for special discount and deal days such as Black Friday in the annual calendar to get some great savings on Christmas presents, especially with a quarter of shoppers planning to spend less this Christmas than in 2023.

But not everyone is aware that there are even more savings to be had on top of the Black Friday deals when it comes to using vouchers. The key to making the most of the major discount shopping day is to be as prepared as possible. Here’s top seven tips to get ahead:

• Use an online wish list and start saving items in there now so that they are ready to be placed straight in your trolley as soon as they go on sale.
• Make sure you’re signed up to your favourite store/brand’s newsletter as you’ll get a heads up on the types of deals and discounts happening on the day.
• Plan ahead and check prices right now if you know what you want. There are free online tools such a PriceRunner that can give you a good headstart. It’s worthwhile doing this for all of the items you fancy purchasing and check them against sale prices to make sure you’ve found the best deal on the day

For the last 10 years, Black Friday has become ingrained in British culture as a way of saving money on consumer goods, and the buzz around the upcoming annual event shows no sign of slowing down as a whopping 80% of people are set to splash the cash on Black Friday this year.

A recent study undertaken by voucher deals website MyVoucherCodes reveals that eight out of ten people will be buying goods on this year’s Black Friday, which falls on November 29th.

69% of customers will be splurging on family and relatives, while 65% of people plan to self-indulge and treat themselves to something nice on the infamous shopping day. 

46% of people will buy for their partner, 31% plan to spoil their friends and 15% want to treat their pets. 10% of people will be purchasing Secret Santa gifts.

The survey also reveals that the average spend per shopper on Black Friday is a whopping £184.6.

More than half of those buying on the day (56%) will use the opportunity to grab some discounted Christmas presents, 48% will buy electrical goods and 48% will spend their hard-earned cash on clothes and shoes. Holidays are the least popular purchase on Black Friday, with just 12% of consumers opting for a discounted getaway.

More than a quarter of those shopping on the day (26%) say they will be searching for deals and voucher codes online to help them save even more of their hard-earned cash.

Shopping expert Sarah Jane Outten from MyVoucherCodes said, “More and more people are becoming aware that you can save yourself a significant amount of money by buying products on Black Friday. A lot of shoppers are unaware that you can add another deal on top of the Black Friday sale price with vouchers and coupons.”

MyVoucherCodes has shared some top shopping tips so you can make the most out of your Black Friday purchasing:

• Check the price history of a product. A lot of shoppers aren’t aware there are tools out there such as CamelCamelCamel, PriceRunner or Keepa for Amazon which show you the price points of a product since it was first launched. You’ll be able to establish if the Black Friday price is a genuine discount.  
• Don’t pay attention to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as it can be confusing. Lots of manufacturers have been found to inflate prices around Black Friday. It’s always a good idea to check the price history first. 
• Create a wishlist and set a budget. Refrain from panic buying and impulse purchases that might not save you money.  
• Use discount voucher codes and offers. Look for additional discount codes and exclusive offers that can save you even more money than the generic Black Friday deals. 
• Use a credit card or PayPal for an extra layer of security when buying online. This can give you valuable peace of mind.
• Mega cheap deals are everywhere on Black Friday, but be cautious about deals on brands you’re not overly familiar with. Research the electronic goodies you have your eye on, as they may need to be more reliable or have the same warranty conditions as more established brands. 
• Tech products, such as smartphones, TVs and tablets are generally updated on a one-year cycle. So be aware that on Black Friday, you’re likely getting a heavily discounted older model

I’ve spent the last few years shifting my shopping habits, I wanted to own less and spend less. I was encouraged to do so because of the rise in fast fashion. Owning many cheap clothes, that lack quality and longevity isn’t for me. I quickly realised that owning low-quality clothing and repairing existing clothes was the way forward. And it seems I’m not alone in this way of thinking, as Second Hand September demonstrates. 

What is Second Hand September?

For the 30 days of September, participants pledge to stop buying new clothes. During this month, if you want to buy clothing, buy only second-hand. You can also use the make-do-and-mend mentality, but whatever you do, stay away from buying new. The movement was started by Oxfam in 2019 and has become increasingly popular with thrifters, bloggers, and social media influencers.  

Why Participate in Second Hand September?

There are several advantages to taking part. Obviously, you will save a lot of money but what else? 

• The mass production of fashion is one of the world's biggest polluters. By taking part, you stand against fast fashion. Join the slow fashion movement. 
• When you buy pre-loved items it increases the demand to make more, therefore taking the pressure off resources. Less water, materials and energy are used. 
• Buying second-hand clothes prevents them from going to landfills. 
• It allows you to increase quantity and increase quality. Investing in quality second-hand clothes will power up your wardrobe. You may even be able to invest in some designer outfits. 
• It supports charities, like Oxfam, which make real changes to real people's lives, especially those who are victims of climate change. 
• Get your creative juices flowing! This is the perfect time to upcycle clothes you may already have. Upcycling clothes is the new fashion, and who wants to look the same as everyone else? Let your individuality shine. 

Tips for Shopping in Second Hand September

Getting started is easy and fun. And you don’t need to stop after 30 days, either. This could be the future of clothes shopping for you and your family.  

• Head to your nearest high street and have a rummage around the charity shops. You can find some real hidden gems on those rails, yes it takes time, but it’s worth it. Take a friend and make a day of it. Not only are you supporting your local high street you are supporting a charity too. 
• Car boot sales are one of the cheapest ways to buy second-hand. I find them a great source for children's clothing. Most people want to make space at home, so they sell items for just a few quid. 
• Kilo sales are becoming increasingly popular, especially with students. Look out for your nearest one. It’s the ultimate pre-loved pic’n’mix, instead of filling your bag with sweets and weighing them, you fill it with second-hand clothes!
• Online is now a great place to pick up affordable and fashionable second-hand clothes. Apps such as Vinted, Depop, eBay, Thrift+, and even the ASOS marketplace offer thousands of second-hand goodies. And don’t forget to visit charity shops online, too. Oxfam (which started Second Hand September), Cancer Research, and The British Heart Foundation are packed with bargains. 
• Arrange a clothes-swapping event with friends and family. You don’t need to part with any money to take part in Second Hand September if you swap garments. You might not love that Fila T-shirt you bought in 1996 anymore but you’re 15-year-old nephew will love it!

A great tip to help you save some cash on your holiday shop is to shop the summer sales. If you time your purchases right, summer clothing and accessories including swimwear, are typically discounted during late summer as retailers make space for new seasonal stock.

Whether you need specialist gear to play a certain sport, or just love hitting the gym to stay fit, the right sportswear helps us feel good when working out. But quality activewear can often come with a hefty price tag. In this guide, we’ll look at the popular features of sportswear and share tips on how shoppers can save money. 

What are shoppers looking for in their sportswear?

Our recent survey shows that price is the top priority for shoppers when buying sportswear. Respondents voted price as more influential in their decision than the style, its impact on performance, or any additional features. 

More than half (54%) of consumers said that price is ultimately most important to them, making it clear that cost remains a major consideration for most shoppers.[1] Around one-fifth (22%) of shoppers prioritise the aesthetics and style of sportswear when buying it, while just 15% said that the impact on their performance is top of their list.

Since price is the most important factor for shoppers, we asked which features would convince them to spend a little extra on their sportswear. The majority stated that the most desirable feature would be breathable fabric – nearly two-thirds (65%) of consumers said this would encourage them to splash a little extra cash.

This was closely followed by sweat-wicking fabric, something that 41% said they would pay more for. Sweat or moisture-wicking fabrics use special materials that are non-absorbent. So, when you sweat, the fabric dries out more quickly rather than soaking into your sportswear – something that’s great for those looking to stay dry during workouts.

Many also love pockets, but they can be difficult to find on seamless gym wear. In fact, 40% said they would pay extra for the convenience of having pockets in their sportswear, something particularly handy for outdoor runners. More than a third (37%) would also splash out for sportswear with extra support, and one-quarter (26%) think sustainable fabric is worth the additional cost.

Other factors include seamless sportswear (17%) and reflective or high-visibility fabric (16%). 

How much can be saved on sportswear?

Our research shows that shoppers who used voucher codes saved a whopping £383,525.50 on sports items in just one year.[2] With over 30,000 transactions shoppers saved around £12 per purchase. While that might not seem like a huge amount, it equates to a massive 21% average savings per shop!

Now, let’s break it down a little further to see what consumers were spending on. Shoppers who used voucher codes in the sports, fitness and outdoors categories saved a huge £84,528.12, averaging just over £6 saved on each purchase. This includes items like gym equipment, outdoor gear, and fitness technology.

At the same time, shoppers saved more than three times that amount on sports clothing! In just one year, consumers saved a massive £298,997.38 using voucher codes. Even with only a few more transactions – close to 18,000 compared to nearly 14,000 – they managed to save over £16.50 per shop. This adds up to a huge saving overall of 23% on average, showing that there are plenty of savings to be made on sportswear by taking advantage of discounts and offers. 

Sportswear features for men vs. women

When it comes to shopping for sportswear, everyone has their own set of must-have features that fit their needs. This is true for men and women, too. We took a closer look at the most popular features for men and women and how they differ from one another.

Some features appeal to both genders equally. For example, breathable fabric was something that almost two-thirds (64%) of both men and women told us that they would pay more for.[1] Sweat-wicking fabric was another popular feature that appealed to both, as 42% and 39% of men and women, respectively, said they would spend extra for this. Similarly, 16% of men and 15% of women would pay more for high visibility or reflective activewear, showing that this is important to both genders, too.

On the other hand, some features are far more appealing to women than men. Extra support is one of these, with almost half (48%) of women saying they would pay more for this, compared to just a quarter of men. Pockets are another feature that women will invest in, at 47%, compared to only one-third (32%) of men. 

Sustainable fabric and seamless materials also matter more to women. In fact, 30% of women would pay extra for sustainable sportswear, while just 22% of men would do the same. 19% of women wanted seamless fabric even if it costs more, compared to just 14% of men.

When choosing what they would splash out on, men were more interested in smart technology. One-quarter of men said they would pay extra for this, while just 12% of women felt the same way. Men also placed slightly more importance on the performance of their sportswear, with 16% ranking this as their top preference, compared to just 13% of women. However, the majority of both genders agreed that price was the most important, followed by the aesthetics and style of the clothing.

I've made it my mission to find out how to elevate every outfit with affordable accessories, and in this article, I’ve compiled my top tips on how you can cut costs on jewellery without compromising on quality. From shopping strategically, to considering more affordable alternatives, you’ll learn everything you need to know for the next moment worth celebrating.

Where to spend

Timeless pieces

Timeless pieces are those which you know will be worn constantly. A good tip is to opt for items that lean into the minimalist style rather than statement pieces because these tend to be easier to wear most days.

Items that are to be worn everyday need to be tarnish-resistant. So, if you’re looking at an item that will be worn frequently, the cost-per-wear justifies spending that little bit more.

I’ve got one pair of gold pearl earrings that I’ve worn every day for the last couple of years, and they’re still good as new because I chose a more luxury brand.

Everyday outfit staples

Look for staples that will elevate everyday outfits. Think small gold hoops or a dainty silver chain. Consider whether they will work with both jeans and a nice top and a beautiful dress.

If the answer is yes, then it’s probably a good idea to spend a bit more so those pieces will stand the test of time. I’ve gone through far too many rings that tarnished quickly. Now, I look for slightly more expensive pieces that make any outfit automatically feel put together.

Solid metal

Solid metal pieces as opposed to plated are known for their longevity and quality finish. They’re a fantastic luxury item to prioritise for those pieces that will be worn constantly - whether that’s in the shower or during exercise classes.

What’s particularly handy with solid metal is that it can be polished, cleaned, and even resized to look good as new. That means even if pieces are looking a little worse for wear, it doesn’t take much to give them a new lease of life.

Lab-grown diamonds

Diamonds are the ultimate way to mark a special moment, but it’s a big investment, so you’ll want to make sure it’s the right one. Picking a lab-grown diamond means you’ll still get the look and feel of a diamond, without the hefty bill.

Do your research and decide whether a cultured diamond or a simulant diamond is more suited to you. Lab-grown diamonds are not only better for your wallet, but they’re a more ethical and environmentally friendly alternative too.

Where to save

Statement pieces

When it comes to statement pieces, they’re typically worn less often. And can sometimes only be worn with certain types of outfits. As a result, your best bet is to opt for more affordable items.

I have some pieces that are adorable specifically for autumn, or even Christmas day. If you’re looking for something seasonal like I was, save your money - these pieces won’t get a ton of wear out of them, but they’re still nice to have in your collection.

Stacking items

Spend the money on your staples and save on your stacking pieces. More often than not, when you pair less expensive items with your more luxury pieces, they’ll look expensive even though they aren’t.

This is a great hack when it comes to building jewellery stacks - be it rings, bracelets, or necklaces, it’s super easy to transform your everyday outfits without spending a fortune.

Big brand names

Although big jewellery companies have beautiful pieces, they’ll likely run up a serious bill as they often have a higher markup on their products. This is something to watch out for, particularly around seasonal periods like Valentine’s Day.

Smart ways to spend better

Plated metal jewellery

When shopping for silver or gold jewellery, cut the cost in half by opting for silver-plated or gold-plated jewellery.

The main difference between solid-metal jewellery and plated-metal jewellery is the percentage of metal in the item. The smaller the percentage of silver or gold, the more affordable the jewellery.

Coloured gemstones

Generally, coloured gemstones tend to be less expensive than colourless gemstones. This is because the price of gemstones depends on the rarity, colour, clarity and cut.

According to Chroma Gems, coloured gemstones such as Amethyst, Peridot, Turquoise, and Opal, are typically less rare which makes them more affordable, but equally as beautiful.

Pre-owned

When shopping for jewellery, don’t forget to check out secondhand shops and online platforms like eBay, Vinted, and Depop. Although you won’t be purchasing from brand new, you never know what you might find in local charity shops.

You might find a few nicks or scratches, but you can easily make secondhand items feel brand new with a polishing cloth or soap and a toothbrush.

Rose gold

Generally, rose gold jewellery tends to be a more affordable option than gold jewellery. With its beautiful, warm, coppery shade, it’s certainly something that will be admired by many.

While rose gold is still typically more expensive than silver because the cost is determined by the amount of gold in the piece, it’s still a stunning alternative if you’re looking at gold.

It’s tempting to take part in fast fashion and near-constant clothing purchases, especially given the influence of social media and celebrities. However, it can be overwhelming to try and keep up, not to mention the negative impact of fast fashion on the environment. Switching to slow fashion and giving clothes a second life can not only save you money long-term but is far more eco-friendly. And who says it can’t be fashionable, too? 

So, how many consumers buy or sell second-hand? Is slow fashion popular enough? And what reasons do shoppers have for switching to buying pre-loved items? To find out, we surveyed 2,000 UK consumers, asking how they engage with slow fashion and why. We’ve also looked at the evolution of the sale value of secondhand goods in Britain and included our top DIY tips on how to upcycle your clothing. Keep reading to find out!

How many people are choosing slow fashion?

According to our survey, three in 10 (30%) UK shoppers buy clothes second-hand.[1] (Quite a significant amount!) A further 14% of consumers choose to engage with slow fashion by searching for sustainably made clothes to buy.

The increased demand has led to plenty of available secondhand clothing, with 29% of survey respondents stating they sell unwanted items on second-hand sites or online marketplaces. More impressively, just under two-thirds (62%) simply give away their unwanted items to charity shops.

Upcycling clothes isn’t as popular, with only 12% of respondents doing so. Perhaps because it can seem like a daunting project! (Don’t worry, we have tips on how to upcycle further down.) 

Around a fifth (22%) of respondents claim not to do any of the above, but this means there’s still room for slow fashion to grow in popularity.

Men vs women: How do their slow fashion habits compare?

It doesn’t come as a surprise to see that women engage with slow fashion habits more than men. While 41% of women buy clothes pre-owned, just a fifth (19%) of men claim to do the same. Similarly, when it comes to selling unwanted items on second-hand shop websites or online marketplaces, more than a third (37%) of women participate, compared to just 21% of men.

As for keeping the greater good in mind, women also take the lead, with 18% of female respondents searching for and buying clothes that are made sustainably, compared to just a tenth (10%) of men. Although half (51%) of men do give unwanted items to charity shops, it’s a staggering 72% of women who do the same. It’s no surprise charity shops are always full of female clothing!

As for upcycling clothes, women are slightly more confident than men. 16% of female respondents admit to giving it a shot, compared to just 8% of men.

Why are people buying second-hand?

With societal pressure to consume, and influencers constantly promoting fast fashion retailers, you might wonder, why are people choosing to buy pre-loved? 

Cost was the main motivator for more than a third (36%) of those who buy second-hand. They say it allows them to buy items for less and makes them more likely to find a bargain.

For 19%, the choice simply comes down to wanting to help the environment, as buying pre-owned goods is a lot more eco-friendly. In a similarly altruistic nature, 15% choose second-hand to help support charities by using their shops.

A tenth (10%) of respondents claim that their main reason for buying pre-owned clothing is to try and avoid fast fashion companies where possible, with the same amount being fueled by a desire to find unique items.

A small 5% choose second-hand clothing because they like to shop with and support local businesses, with another 5% stating they do so for other reasons.

Is second-hand shopping becoming more popular?

Yes! Second-hand shopping is growing in popularity. In fact,  the retail sales index for second-hand goods has been steadily increasing over the last decade in the UK.[2]

In 2013, the retail index for second-hand goods was at an average value of 76.9. Almost a decade later, in 2022, the same value is at a much higher 111.1! The value has been increasing year after year, dropping only during the years 2015 and 2020.

These figures suggest that more and more consumers are wanting to buy and sell pre-loved items. Increasing second-hand sales could also help break the stigma around buying pre-owned goods, further allowing the slow fashion market to flourish.

How to upcycle clothing: Our DIY tips for a brand-new wardrobe

Fashion upcycling and DIY clothing are two of the most cost-effective ways to engage with slow fashion. 

But…what is upcycling? 

Put simply, upcycling means using discarded items and materials and transforming them into something new and usable. Essentially, it’s taking old clothes, giving them a bit of a DIY makeover, and enjoying them as a new fashionable wardrobe upgrade! 

The next question is…how do you upcycle? 

There is no ‘right’ way to upcycle. Work with what you have, keep it simple, and be creative! 

Here are some of our top tips:

Use beginner-friendly guides: The internet is full of DIY guides on how to upcycle clothes. These can provide you with plenty of ideas and inspiration, and sometimes they’ll even come with step-by-step instructions! YouTube videos and social media can also be great sources of tips and tricks for your upcycling journey.

Start with easier clothes: Some clothing items are easier to upcycle than others. Start simple and work your way to more difficult garments so you can grow your confidence and develop the necessary skills. We recommend you begin with an old T-shirt, a pair of jeans, dresses, shorts, or even button-down shirts.

Change an item’s shape with scissors: If you want a no-sewing solution to your upcycling project, why not try changing the item’s shape through a few cuts? For example, you could turn an old t-shirt into a fashionable new crop top, or a pair of ragged jeans into cute denim shorts. 

New colour, new life: Sometimes a splash of colour is all it takes to give your clothes a fresh look and a second life. You can easily use fabric dye to change an item’s appearance, just remember that it’s easier to switch to a darker colour rather than a lighter one! You could also draw on art with bleach, for an extra personal touch.

Add embellishments: You can merge two items into one, or add some embellishment details to your clothing through the application of lace, embroidery, or an appliqué. And if you don’t want to brave the sewing, you could always get some iron-on patches!

Our survey data has highlighted how Brits tend to approach the holiday hangover. Almost half of the nation struggles financially after the festive season and over a third (35%) admit to experiencing the January blues, grappling with post-festive melancholy amplified by financial constraints.

Those of us between the ages of 30 and 50 seem to be hit hardest by new year troubles, as 44% of respondents who said they suffer from the January blues belonged to this age group. Women are also more likely to experience these issues in the new year - 66% of those who stated that the January blues affects them were women.

Retail therapy is a popular respite among all the doom and gloom, with 17% of us using shopping as a way to combat the January blues. The science suggests that this works, too, as retail therapy can help to restore a sense of control and autonomy. This then releases dopamine - the brain hormone responsible for making you feel good.

Also, 17% fight the blues by taking a winter getaway, seeking some comfort in the form of a holiday escape. However, with money matters looming large, navigating January trips and sales can be a delicate balance between desire and caution.

Indulging in retail therapy during financial stress

Because of the financial pressure felt after the festive season, the January sales become a crucial time for savvy shoppers seeking deals without blowing their budgets. One of the ways you can enjoy these sales while protecting your wallet is through the use of voucher codes.

Last year, consumers saved a staggering £545,840 during January 2023 using this trick.[2] The majority of purchases (46%) were for fashion items. In fact, consumers saved a total of £171,640 during this period on fashion alone, so there are plenty of savings to be made for those looking to glam up without pushing the boat out.

What to Expect from the Winter Sales

From Boxing Day through to January, keep your eye out for discounts and deals in the fashion industry. 

With several brands and retailers offering savings of up to 80%, you’ll be able to ensure that your wardrobe is prepped, whatever the weather. Whether it’s cosy knits and fluffy coats, or snazzy swimwear and mini skirts, make the most of the winter sales to help save you some serious cash on seasonal clothing. 

We’ve all been there - that sinking feeling when we realise we’ve made a huge blunder in our Christmas shopping. But everyone makes mistakes, and festive fumbles are rarely the end of the world. They’re so common we thought we’d find out which ones Brits make the most during their holiday shopping, along with a few tips on how to avoid making them this year! 

The most common Christmas shopping slip-ups

They say that failing to prepare is preparing to fail, and it seems that’s very true when it comes to Christmas shopping. Over a quarter (29%) of those we surveyed said that they’re guilty of leaving their shopping until the last minute, making it the most common Christmas shopping mistake of all. Disorganisation is truly the enemy when it comes to the festive season.[1] 

Here are the top five Christmas shopping mistakes: 

Overpaying also seems to be a frequent misstep, with 26% saying they got an item that was available for less elsewhere. A similar amount of consumers (25%) made the fatal error of buying an item that won’t arrive in time. Meanwhile, 15% of shoppers forgot to buy a present for someone, resulting in an emergency trip to the shops after the big day.

Some consumers (12%) simply needed to have done a background check, as they admitted to getting someone an item they already own. The same percentage made the unfortunate gaffe of being a bit too clever, admitting that they’d lost a present because they’d forgotten where they hid it at home.

For others, the error wasn’t in the gift itself, but simply the presentation, as one in 10 confessed that they’d forgotten to buy wrapping paper for their presents on the big day - whoops! The least common mistake on our list was buying the same present as someone else, made by only 7% of respondents. Thankfully, coordination isn’t an issue many of us face around the holiday season.

Men Vs. Women: Who makes the most blunders?

What are the biggest differences between men and women when it comes to Christmas shopping? Overall, it seems that women are more likely to make a misstep over the holidays, as 73% of women in our survey admitted to making at least one error, compared to 66% of men.

It turns out that women are much more likely to overspend on their holiday shopping, with this being their most common mistake. In fact, 31% of women surveyed said they bought an item they could’ve gotten cheaper somewhere else. In contrast, just 20% of men gave the same answer.

Women are also more likely to forget where they hid something, as 17% said they’d misplaced a gift, in comparison to 7% of men. On the other hand, men’s biggest challenge is leaving it too late. Almost a third (32%) of men surveyed said they’ve left their shopping to the last minute, while just 27% of women said the same thing.

Experience is the greatest teacher

It’s clear that great shopping comes with experience. Only 59% of those aged 60 and over admitted to making an error when doing their Christmas shopping, making them the least likely to slip up on their gift-giving.

Perhaps the key skill younger shoppers should learn from their elders is organisation, as the biggest difference between both age groups was waiting until the last minute. Only 21% of those 60 and over said they’ve made this mistake, compared to 37% of under 25s. Similarly, 38% of 25-39s also admitted to leaving it late, making it the number one blunder for shoppers under 40.

Younger generations are also more likely to forget wrapping paper (15% of under 25s compared to 6% of those 60 and over) and buy something that won’t be delivered on time (26% of under 25s compared to 16% of those 60 and over).

Tips for avoiding a Crimbo shopping misstep

We could all do with one less thing to stress about these days, so to help minimise the pressure that comes with purchasing gifts, we’ve drafted up a list of top tips for Christmas shopping. Read on for a faff-free Christmas clear of merry mistakes: 

Set reminders: Many of us leave it too late to get started, and a simple way of avoiding this is to set an annual reminder to begin getting gifts. Put a note in your diary or add a recurring event in your phone’s calendar so that you can always see when it’s time to hit the shops.

Alternatively, try thinking of an annual event to use as a prompt to get started, such as the first Christmas advert you see on the telly! Another good one is to use Black Friday as a starting point. As soon as the sales get underway, you know it’s time to put on your Santa hat and get cracking.

Lists aren’t just for Santa: If Santa uses them then you should too! Lists are a great way of staying organised, so try to use them to your advantage during the holiday season. Struggling to remember who you need to buy a gift for? Make a list! Unsure of what to get everyone? Ask them if they have a list! You can even make a wishlist for yourself to send to others who are struggling for inspiration!

Keep an eye out for vouchers and price trackers: Paying more than needed is a real blow, especially when times are tight. To make sure you’re getting presents for the best possible price, be sure to keep an eye out for deals and voucher codes on the stuff your loved ones enjoy. That way, putting a smile on their face doesn’t have to put a dent in your wallet.

Buy backup pressies (if you’re able):  Keeping track of everyone you need to buy gifts for can be tricky - it’s no wonder so many of us have forgotten someone at some point! A good way around this, if you can afford to, is to get a stash of backup presents ready for a worst-case scenario.

These don’t have to be too extravagant, just simple treats to ensure you have something to give to those who slip your mind. For example, a good chocolate tub, biscuit tin or just a nice bottle of gin for anyone who might like a tasty tipple. You could even get a few emergency selection boxes for any little ones you might accidentally miss.

According to research from ShipEngine, ShipStation and Retail Economics, 79% of UK consumers plan to cut back on non-food Black Friday and Christmas spending.[1] To help ease the struggle, we’ve put together some top tips on saving money on gifts this holiday season and have revealed how much money vouchers can help save during the Christmas period! 

The cost of living crisis - how is it affecting Christmas spending?

With the cost of living crisis still hanging over the nation, finding the cash for Christmas is going to be tougher for many families this year. New research from ShipEngine, ShipStation and Retail Economics has revealed that households will have around £3bn less to spend this holiday season.[1] 

As part of the research, around a third (34%) of UK consumers stated inflation as a main reason for cutting back, while 22% named a lack of savings.[1] Circumstances beyond shoppers’ control are making it harder for Brits to fork out on holiday spending. 

To get over these challenges, many are planning to spread the cost over a longer period by starting their shopping earlier. The majority of UK consumers are also looking to spend digitally, with nearly two-thirds (64%) stating they will shop online.[1] Overall, UK consumers are set to spend £17.9 billion on online marketplaces, between Black Friday and Christmas.[1] 

How to save money on gifts this Christmas

We know that this Christmas will be financially challenging for many families. But, having limitations on spending shouldn’t limit your enjoyment of the holidays, so we’re sharing our top tips on how to save money on gifts.  So, here are some budget-friendly ways to treat your loved ones this Christmas: 

Make budgeting fun by setting gift rules with friends and family: 

One of the best ways to avoid overspending is to set down some gift ground rules for Christmas. For example, you can talk to your family and friends and set budget limitations.

A good guideline is to use the four-gift strategy: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. Of course, if needed, you can replace these rules with others that better fit you!

Spread the gift responsibilities through a game of Secret Santa:

Buying gifts for every single friend and family member can quickly add up the spending costs. Instead, why not suggest spreading the gift responsibilities among everyone? Secret Santa is a good way to go about this.

It’s undeniable that Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer some of the most enticing deals compared to any other sales event. With so many exciting discounts and offers going on, it can be tough to see where the value really lies, which can lead to impulse purchases and buyer’s remorse. In 2021, a Which? survey of 2,000 UK adults even revealed that the majority of people who bought a product during the sale regretted it.[1]

Although these events can hold persuasive deals, some offers aren’t always the bargains they seem. So, we’ve taken a look at data from Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2022 to uncover the best time to shop during this season and which categories offer the best deals. Read below to find out when you’ll save the most cash!

Black Friday vs Cyber Monday

Despite the two events being separate, they’ve seemed to blend seamlessly ever since Black Friday began to span over a weekend. This mix of events can blur the lines between a good deal and a sour deal. So, which of the two offers the best bargains? 

Well, our research reveals that in 2022, UK shoppers saved an average of 13% on Black Friday.[2] However, only a few days later, the same products saw an increase in price of 19%. This revelation gives us a sense of which event holds the best deals for us shoppers. While Cyber Monday can still offer some worthwhile discounts, Black Friday tends to present a better bargain.

We also broke down the best-selling products from 12 categories to find out which one offers the most beneficial savings.  This uncovered that the category with the highest percentage of savings during Black Friday was beauty, followed by baby & kids, photography & video, and fashion. If you’re looking to spruce up your look, Black Friday is the day for you!

This matches with the types of vouchers shoppers like to use during Black Friday weekend. We found that a fifth (22%) of Black Friday weekend transactions were for fashion purchases.[3] With average savings of 16% during the sales event, it’s no surprise that shoppers are eager to snag those deals!

The Bestsellers in 2022[4]

Unsurprisingly, some of the most popular purchases during Black Friday were wireless earbuds, tablets, and laptops. This could be due to the way the event is advertised, as there’s often a heavy emphasis on technology and appliances. However, with only an 11% average savings in this category (around £7 per product), it’s clear that you might find superior deals elsewhere. 

When it came to home interest, it was dehumidifiers, vacuum cleaners and our increasingly beloved air fryers that were some of the most bought products. Home appliances saw the average buyer save 11%, while home and kitchen products were discounted by an average of 12%. This saved shoppers a combined average of £22 per purchase, so Black Friday might just be the time to consider home improvement!

Shopping Smart During the Sale Season

 The surge in Black Friday’s popularity has also made it a prime target for scams. In 2020, UK shoppers fell victim to fraudulent activities amounting to a staggering £2.5 million during the sales event, a 61% increase from 2019, as reported by Gwyn Topham at The Guardian.

Staying vigilant during these sales events is crucial. Here are some proactive measures you can take to protect yourself from potential scams:

• Opt for payment methods like PayPal or credit cards for added security
• Avoid shopping with retailers that you haven’t heard of previously
• Be wary of spam emails with Black Friday offers attached
• Compare prices across various retailers to ensure you’re getting the best deal
• Keep an eye on the product prices leading up to Black Friday

 And remember, if a deal seems too good to be true - it probably is.

If you're a fan of well-known brands I would say price comparison sites are essential when getting the best price - and that's sound advice all year round. Keeping up with everything your favourite brands have to offer can feel overwhelming at times but signing up for their newsletters can be a great way to stay up to date, especially on the run-up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. 

Most fashion retailers have some kind of newsletter or emailing list you can sign up for which will tell you about the latest product releases, sales, and the most exclusive deals and discounts. This is the best way to receive the latest information regarding a brand’s Cyber Monday event (especially sale extensions which are becoming more popular). 

Pay with a credit card or PayPal

Unfortunately, during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there is an influx of scams that catch thousands of people out every year. Thankfully, there are a few ways to protect yourself whilst still enjoying the insane savings out there. 

If you’re looking at purchasing some big-ticket items, using a credit card instead of a debit card will offer a necessary layer of protection. HSBC’s ‘Credit cards vs debit cards’ article tells us that this is because “Your card provider is jointly liable with the retailer so, if the goods are faulty or the company goes bust, you’re entitled to claim your money back.” According to Section 75 of the Consumer Act, this could apply to orders between £100 to £30,000. 

Alternatively, PayPal is also a great way to shop with security. According to Tim Parker from Investopedia, “The PayPal Purchase Protection policy ensures that users are reimbursed in full, including shipping costs, if a product purchased online using PayPal arrives and is “significantly different from its description”.’ Using PayPal can ensure that, should a Cyber Monday scam catch you out, you will be able to claim your money back without too much difficulty. 

Set up online accounts prior to your shop

There are loads of deals available during the Cyber Monday sales and prior preparation will help you to enjoy them stress-free. To create an easy Cyber Monday shopping experience, make sure you create accounts with your favourite brands and retailers a few days before the sales begin. Doing this will not only make placing your orders quick and easy but it will also grant you perks such as easy tracking and returns should you require it. Several brands also offer ‘New Customer discounts’ when you create an account. These promo codes can be used in conjunction with some Cyber Monday promotions but check the terms and conditions regarding this. 

Beware of Cyber Monday scams

There are a lot of online scams these days, especially during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The are three scams that are commonly found during these sales events; being aware of them will help you to be safe online and save money whilst you’re at it.

Purchasing scams are possibly the most common. This is a fairly simple scam but it catches out a lot of people; this is when you purchase an item that never arrives. The good news is, if you pay using a credit card or PayPal, you may be able to claim your money back. 

The next most common scam is known as a phishing scam. Usually, this would mean you would receive a ‘Problem with your delivery’ email. These types of emails normally demand some form of payment to ‘re-deliver’ your package. It’s important to note that most if not all delivery companies (including Royal Mail) will not charge you for redelivery should you miss its original arrival. Fake delivery notifications (received via email or text message) work in the same vain as a phishing scam and should be avoided at all costs.

Charity stores work much like wanted, except you’ll have to check each store near you physically, and they are likely to have a smaller range. But, because your local charity store likely has fewer customers than a vast online clothing market, you may have more chance to nab some branded suit jackets, shirts or trousers. If you get lucky, you may even find a full matching suit that someone only needed once. For those who don’t have the space or funds to buy a suit outright, suit rentals are common and often cheaper than buying a brand-new suit from a tailor at around £50-80, depending on brand and type.
