Host a bonfire night for the ultimate cosy and wholesome get-together. Have everyone bring blankets and chairs, and decorate your outdoor space with some fairy lights for that enchanting feel.

When it comes to the perfect, sophisticated engagement party, you can’t go wrong with afternoon tea. But instead of going over budget somewhere posh, opt to make it yourself instead, with a little help from your guests.

Decide whose making what: scones, baked goods, and finger sandwiches. And all you need to do is supply the warm beverages and classy crockery.

Get the party started with a games night. Instead of buying new games, have every guest bring a different game - be it a board game like The Traitors, trivia or a pack of cards - and enjoy an evening filled with laughter.

Why not have a go at building your own adorable Easter basket for less? All you need is a basket (spoilers, it doesn’t have to be an actual basket) and a few thoughtful gestures. It’s ideal as a wholesome activity or a small gift.

Now, social media might tell you that you need to go out and buy a brand new basket, but I think otherwise. Easter is all about celebrating new beginnings, so it’s the perfect time to repurpose something you already own.

I’m talking about an old jam jar, a spare storage basket, a very large mug, or even a flower pot. These items will make your Easter basket all the more adorable.

2. Easter treats

You can’t have an Easter basket without some irresistibly delicious treats, now can you? Avoid paying for over-priced cookies and brownies, and bake some instead. It’s a known fact that I love Jane’s Patisserie recipes, and she has a ton of wholesome Easter recipes to choose from.

Alternatively, level up your fruit with a star-shaped cookie cutter – star-shaped banana and cucumber look adorable. And don’t forget about mini chocolate eggs, too. These are far more affordable than large Easter eggs and taste just as good.

3. Wholesome activity

Over the Easter bank holidays, I love spending time with my family. We eat food and play tons of garden games together, and it’s the best. Include a wholesome activity to do with the kids in their Easter baskets.

4. Personal touches

Finally, add a personal touch to make it one to remember. It doesn’t have to cost you a fortune – think a small note or letter, a handwritten poem, or some DIY coupons. You could do hug coupons, breakfast in bed, a movie night, or just some quality time.

We’ve spent the last month fasting for Ramadan, and now it’s almost the time to celebrate the best time of the year - Eid. This year, I’ll be hosting Eid for the first time, and I’m super excited.

I’ll be making sure that it feels as special as can be – from indulgent, homemade traditional food, to decorations and fun activities. And I’ll be doing it as affordably as I possibly can.

What is Eid?

Eid is the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan. It takes place after approximately 30 days of fasting from sunrise to sunset.

Traditionally, Eid involves spending time with family and friends, eating delicious food and exchanging thoughtful gifts.

When is Eid 2026?

This year, Eid takes place on the evening of Thursday, 19th March. That means that Thursday, 19th March, will be the final day of fasting for Ramadan, and Eid will begin after breaking fast that evening.

Food

Bring a board

Take the stress off making everything yourself, and split the cost by having everyone bring a board. Some fun traditional board options include a stuffed date board, a hummus dip board, and a mezze board.

It’s a great idea to have each family member make their own dishes. Not only is it much more affordable than buying everything yourself, but it means you’ll often get more of a greater variety of delicious dishes, too.

Traditional Eid food ideas

This year, I’ll be doing as many classic Eid dishes as possible from scratch. Some fun ideas I’m planning on making include hummus, harissa potatoes, tabouleh, olives and feta cheeseboard, pita breads, labneh, and sambousek.

Most of these are simple to make and don’t require any expertise in the kitchen. As mentioned above, you could split these so that each guest makes one - that way you’re not stuck in the kitchen all day and can enjoy the celebration.

Sweet treat ideas

Opt to make your own sweet treats instead of purchasing expensive ones. I’m making Turkish delight (an absolute favourite of mine), baklava, and medjool dates stuffed with dark chocolate and pistachios.

Host brunch

Go non-traditional and host your Eid celebration as a brunch instead. Sometimes the cost of bigger celebrations can quickly add up, so something smaller like brunch can help you save.

Make homemade pastries and mini pancakes, served with fresh fruit. Add a side of homemade granola and Greek yoghurt, with tea & coffee.

Eid treat bag

A lovely idea is to send everyone home with a treat bag. But instead of spending money on things to fill them with, simply buy some bags (or reuse old jars) and have everyone fill their bags with food and treats that everyone has made.

Decorations

Reuse decor

It’s always tempting to purchase new decor for every celebration that comes around. Instead, reuse decor from previous years to make your space look special. I have some black and gold decorations from when I hosted New Year's, and it’d be ideal for Eid too.

If you do want to treat yourself to some new decor, my advice is to opt for something that can be used for other celebrations too.

Make your own

This year, make your own Eid decorations to save money. Use Pinterest for inspiration – I’m thinking crescent moons and stars, candles, and paper bunting. You can find affordable supplies from Hobbycraft and The Works.

Head to the supermarket flowers section and make a gorgeous floral arrangement for Eid. Buy three or five bunches of flowers - most of the time, you can find individual bunches for under £5 – and have a go at arranging them yourself for the perfect centrepiece.

Use what you’ve got

Avoid splurging on excessive, non-essential items when you host Eid and use what you’ve got. If you’re anything like me, you might have a drawer full of unused paper plates and napkins, and this is the time to use them.

A moment of gratification

Set some time aside for a moment of gratification. I previously mentioned the importance of gratitude in my recent article on gentle self-care during Ramadan.

Exciting celebrations without an intention can sometimes run away from you. Engage in a group prayer, or take turns sharing your Ramadan reflections and experiences this year.

Afternoon walk

I love an afternoon walk after eating a big meal, which is great for Eid. During Ramadan, I often spend a lot more time indoors, so getting outside in the Spring air feels wonderful.

It’s a great way to break up the day if you’re planning on spending a whole day celebrating with family and friends.

Garden games

Eid is a beautiful time to come together and spend quality time. Providing that the weather allows for it, get outside and have some fun playing garden games. Some of the most fun include Jenga, Red King, and swingball.

Donation gift basket

Add a thoughtful touch to your Eid celebration and have a donation gift basket out. Let your guests know ahead of time and give them the opportunity to bring something to donate. Think dates, nuts, prayer beads, scented candles, incense, and essential oils.

If your mum is anything like mine, then you’ll know that it can be near impossible to convince her to really relax. That’s why I’ve shared my top tips on how to make your mum feel special this Mother’s Day.

And now, I’ve put together five simple steps to plan the ultimate day off for mum. Read on to find out more – it’ll most definitely be appreciated.

1. Don’t let her plan a single thing

The golden rule when it comes to giving your mum a day off is to not let her plan a single thing. If your mum is a bit of a control freak, then this might be tricky. But the key here is to have a solid plan - and try to think of just about everything.

Whatever the plan is, you decide. Think about what she would like to do (not you!). You could even plan a little itinerary and give it to her the night before as a cute gesture.

2. A slow, uninterrupted morning

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a slow morning? And mums probably don’t get to enjoy them enough.

While she stays in bed to chill out, surprise her with her favourite drink and some breakfast. The key with this one is not to rush her. Allow her the privilege of getting ready as slowly and as glamorously as she likes.

3. Time alone

This is one that a lot of people forget about when it comes to Mother’s Day. Now, quality time is still important, but so is time alone. Run her a bath, let her nap, or prepare other arrangements while she goes for a walk or reads her book.

4. Manage her to-do list

This one is a biggie - and it’ll truly make her day. We all know that mum’s to-do list is infinitely long. Take a huge weight off her shoulders and get some things ticked off for her.

Declutter the cupboards, put a load of washing on, and tidy her workspace – it’ll mean more than words can say. Do it while she’s having some downtime to make it even more guilt-free.

5. Low-pressure quality time

Last, and by no means least, some quality time – but the key here is to ensure that it’s low-pressure. While a dinner reservation or a shopping trip can be fun, if the vibe of the day is all about winding down, a low-stress activity is perfect.

Think about doing a puzzle, going for a walk, or watching her favourite film. Take the time to actually spend time together - have a proper conversation. She’ll love it.

For the last couple of years, my partner and I haven’t celebrated Valentine’s Day. Instead, we’ve put our effort into finding some of the best ways to show love all year round, without the added cost.

Whether you’re taking part in Valentine’s Day this year or not, you might be looking for ways to celebrate without overspending. Here are some of my favourite things that cost nothing, but mean everything.

Low-pressure quality time

1. Go on a walk

Going on a walk with my partner is sometimes just what I need. It’s super easy and low effort, and it’s the perfect way to connect with no distractions.

2. Listen to a podcast together

Sometimes we do this while on a walk together if we feel a bit talked-out from being at work all day. Pick a podcast or audio book to listen to together. It’s a lovely way to find something new to discuss.

3. Couples readathon

If you’re both bookworms at heart, host a readathon together. Buy your favourite snacks, get cosy, and read. Make it even more fun by choosing a book for each other or reading the same book together. Extra points if it’s a book you already own.

4. No phone zone and undivided attention

The no-phone-zone is something we started doing a few years back. In a world where we’re all glued to our screens, it’s a great way to give your partner some undivided attention.

5. Sitting together while enjoying separate hobbies

Sometimes it’s not so much about doing things together, but just doing things in the presence of one another. While my partner watches a new tv series, I love to do some embroidery, scrapbooking, or playing on my Nintendo Switch.

Make something instead of buying something

6. Make vision boards

Connect over shared goals and aspirations with a vision board making night. All you need is some scrap paper and some thoughtful ideas.

7. Open when… letters

If words of affirmation mean the world to you, make each other a bundle of ‘open when…’ letters. Make them as creative and personal as you like. Sometimes things like this are appreciated more than a gift.

8. Bake their favourite sweet treat

My partner and I absolutely love to bake. Whether we bake together or surprise one another with something new and delicious to try, it’s a sure-fire way to make someone’s day. After all, there’s nothing better than a freshly baked sweet treat.

9. Thoughtful notes

Leave your partner little notes here and there to remind them of how much they are loved and appreciated. My partner and I always write notes for each other and hide them around the house to find when one of us is going away.

10. Affirmation jar

All you need for this one is an empty jar – which, if you’re a candle lover like me, won’t be hard to find. Fill the jar with affirmations and memories you cherish to put a smile on your partner’s face. Have them pick one out weekly as a heartfelt reminder.

11. Morning coffee together

Cut back on the coffee shop visits and enjoy a morning coffee in bed together instead. I always find that I feel more fulfilled when I do this with my partner instead of rushing my morning to get on with the day.

12. Host one another

Take it in turns to host for the night. Have one of you in charge of dinner and one in charge of dessert, and keep it a total surprise until you sit down to eat.

13. Monthly date night

Prioritise a monthly date night. My partner and I have a shared note on our phones to note down date night ideas to enjoy. We categorise ours based on nights in and nights out so, it works for our budget and energy levels too.

14. Evening check-ins

Each evening, take the time to check in with one another. Don’t just ask about work – really talk to each other and make the time to do so. No distractions. No commitments. Just you.

15. Sunday resets

Work together to get things back for the week ahead. Get back on top of washing, wipe down the kitchen sides, meal plan and swap schedules. It takes half the time if you do it together.

Perla Coco has revolutionised the way I buy and wear jewellery. Gone are the days of me heading to general brands for fashion jewellery, I now wear unique handcrafted pieces made with recycled materials. From smaller everyday pieces to unusual statement pieces, I get compliments whenever I wear Perla Coco Designs. My most loved treasure is a gold necklace with an oversized golden swallow, it’s always a talking point and, as yet, I’ve never seen anyone else wear anything else like it. March Muse - Best for black-owned 

March Muse is a female-led brand that I’ve never been happier to discover. As a mum of mixed-heritage children, I’ve found it incredibly challenging to find gifts that represent my family. During the Christmas of 2023, whilst shopping in Tesco I was delighted to find gift wrap and Christmas cards that represented my family. The beautiful artwork featured Black Santas and mixed-heritage angels, it was an emotional discovery. Since then, I’ve purchased an angel tree topper that looks just like my daughter - she is seen! I plan to buy more Christmas decorations this year, and finally, Christmas is a reflection of what a mixed-heritage family looks like. 

Natalie Duvall is the founder of March Muse. Natalie told me how March Muse began, and it was a relatable story. Natalie said ‘the idea for March Muses came when I was decorating the Christmas tree with my daughter Sophia and she asked me if Christmas angels could have brown skin. We were hanging up white angels and Santas at the time.’ But starting her business was a challenge. Natalie went on to explain that

Spectrum  - Best for Beauty  

As a qualified makeup artist, I love great quality makeup tools. I discovered Spectrum makeup brushes in 2016 on a local photoshoot. I was impressed with the performance of the brushes, so did some research online. At that time the range of brushes was fairly small, I purchased a set and I’ve never looked back. I recently discovered Bookbar on a trip to London. As an avid reader, bookshops are my happy place. I’m always on the lookout for an independent bookseller too, so I wandered into Bookbar and wasn’t disappointed. What better combination can there be than a good book with a glass of wine or a delicious cup of coffee? There is a real sense of escapism at Bookbar, I didn’t look at my phone once! I could take my time choosing a new book and even got chatting with other book lovers whilst having a drink. It seemed they loved it there too and we happily shared book recommendations. I don’t live in London and felt quite sad that I won’t be able to visit every week, but I’ve recently become aware of the Bookbar Bookclub which provides you with a book and a virtual event with the author. When is Father's Day this year?

Don’t leave picking up a gift for Dad until the last minute, you will only panic buy and he’s probably got enough socks already! Father’s Day is on Sunday the 16th of June this year (2024).  

How much should I spend on a Father’s Day present?

The short answer to this is - what you can afford. Your Dad isn’t going to want you to overspend, so set a realistic budget. According to our survey children and families spend an average of just over £30. 

With this in mind, I decided to set a £20 budget, so that you can make some valuable savings or have a few quid left over to treat Dad to a couple of pints or a coffee and a cake!  

What do dads want for Father's Day?

Our survey found that Dads want the simple things in life, from spending time with the children to a home-cooked meal. And at the top of the list was a restaurant trip. Other top requests included: a holiday (don't we all!), beer, a hotel stay, wine, chocolate, tickets to a sporting event and books.  

The survey also revealed what gifts Dad would rather you didn't waste your money on. Fishing gear was the most unwanted gift - understandable if he isn't a fisherman! Other unwanted gifts included: A Hawaiian shirt (no surprises there, unless he's a massive Hawaii Five-O fan?), Best Dad merch, and socks (he probably got plenty for Christmas).

The Basket

Traditionally, a hamper is given in a wrapped wicker basket with a rustic feel. You can get one from The Works for under £5 alternatively, you can get plastic ones that look like wicker from places such as Amazon for around the same price. It may even be worth checking your local charity shop, where you can find one for cheap and help a good cause. That being said, a basket isn’t necessarily the only thing you can use. Instead, you can paint an empty shoebox or small wooden box to align with your colour theme. Maybe write Happy Mother’s Day on top for that added personal touch. You could also reuse a gift bag if you have one handy.

Alcohol

If you’re looking to save with a Mother’s Day hamper, I would recommend not including alcohol because it can bump up the price of your basket fast. However, Suppose you have a colour theme such as pink and wish to use alcohol. In that case, a mini Gordon’s pink gin can be bought for under £2 from many supermarkets or online stores such as VIP Bottles or The Bottle Club and will compliment your theme nicely without going overboard.

However, when most think of a candle, they think of Yankee; the word is almost synonymous, but the price of a Yankee candle is pretty high. So, I would advise avoiding the Yankee brand and taking a trip to your nearest Aldi, where you can pick up their Purewick brand of scented candles and diffusers for less than half the price. The catch is they sell out relatively fast, and you’re at the whim of the mysterious middle aisle. If Aldi is sadly sold out, The Range makes a good selection of scented candles cheaper than Yankee, while Home Bargains sells a brand called Wickford & Co. 

Beauty & Relaxation

Include budget-friendly bath bombs (you can even make your own), scented candles, or homemade sugar scrubs for a spa-like experience. What’s particularly handy with solid metal is that it can be polished, cleaned, and even resized to look good as new. That means even if pieces are looking a little worse for wear, it doesn’t take much to give them a new lease of life.

Lab-grown diamonds

Diamonds are the ultimate way to mark a special moment, but it’s a big investment, so you’ll want to make sure it’s the right one. Picking a lab-grown diamond means you’ll still get the look and feel of a diamond, without the hefty bill.

Buying Used

Buying a gently used bike can save a lot of money. Check Facebook marketplace, gumtree or even car boot sales if it's the season. But inspect for rust on the chain or frame first and ensure the brake system works well. However, keep an open mind; you’re buying a bike that has been used, not a shiny chrome one straight off display. There are likely to be superficial scratches and paint scuffs, but these won’t affect the usability of the bike, and depending on the colour, a lick of metal paint, it’ll be as good as new.

Halfords is a well-trusted bike seller for all ages and has a second-hand bike store where bikes are graded and checked for quality and safety. You can even spread the cost via Klarna for even better affordability.

You can get bigger savings via eBay as people sell bikes their children have outgrown without space to store them. However, you are less likely to get a warranty or an officially refurbished bike. You could also try Gumtree, which is essentially the same as eBay but easier to plan swaps.  

Swap with Friends

As kids outgrow bikes, consider setting up a community swap. This way, everyone gets a new-to-them bike without spending much (or any) money.

Forgive the joke, but avoid the bells and whistles. Elaborate designs and flashy embellishments on kids’ bikes can certainly make them stand out in the store and to your child. Still, these aesthetic additions often have an inflated price tag without enhancing the bike’s functionality. When budgeting for a bike, it’s crucial to focus on the core features: safety, size, durability and ease of use. These aspects will ensure that the bike serves its primary purpose of being a reliable and safe vehicle for your child to have fun with. 

Trade-In

Many stores offer credit towards a new bike when you trade in an old one. Depending on the brand, you could get £100s towards a new one for your child. Halfords has a pricing table that may give you an idea about how much you may get. 

Lease

Kids grow up fast, and before you know it, the bike you bought last year for their birthday is too small, and you have to go through the process of buying another bike and selling the old one. But there is another option: leasing. When leasing a bike, you get a brand new model and pay a monthly subscription, then at the end, you give the bike back, no fuss. Some companies, such as the Bike Club, offer kids bikes from as low as £4.99/month. More and more people choose to lease bikes for their children every year. 

Even John Lewis now works with the Bike Club to offer great leasing options. My tips will reduce the cost of Christmas without sacrificing the sparkle. Read on to find out how. 

Family Secret Santa

Buying a gift for every family member can get expensive. Why not have fun with Secret Santa Gifts? Just as you would in the office or with friends; decide on a budget, pop everyone’s name in the hat and just buy one gift for that family member. It will massively reduce the cost of gifting.  

Ditch wrapping paper for brown paper

Brown paper is generally a lot cheaper than traditional wrapping paper and you get more for your money per roll. Leave the brown paper plain for a contemporary feel or get the kids to decorate it! In addition to this, don’t waste money on expensive ribbons and add ordinary household string to your gifts. It’s worth remembering that a lot of cheaper wrapping paper isn’t recyclable either, brown paper is - win-win!  

Avoid the expensive advent calendars

Whether it’s chocolate or cosmetics, you can blow a fortune on advent calendars.   And if you want to buy a few of them it becomes an incredibly expensive tradition. Consider buying a reusable advent calendar and filling it with chocolates or treats., there are loads on the market or you could consider buying your own if you’re crafty. You don’t need to do 24 days either - 12 days leading up to Christmas is perfect for younger children.  

Budget Christmas days out

Christmas markets and events are great fun, but expensive. Get the kids wrapped up warm and head to a local park. Create a checklist of things to find eg: oak tree, robin, yellow flowers and so on. Once the checklist is complete there’s a festive prize. My kids love a chocolate reindeer. In addition to this, we love the Christmas lights drive every year. Most neighbourhoods provide a plethora of festive cheer for free.  If you do have a small budget, why not head to the cinema and see a Christmas movie with the family, take your own snack, sit back and enjoy! 

Festive hot drinks at home

There’s nothing like a festive hot chocolate or coffee but for the price of one in your favourite coffee shop, you can buy all the ingredients you need to make one for every family member. Go crazy with the sprinkles, watch your favourite Christmas film and enjoy! If the thought of making your own doesn’t appeal use any free coffees you have earned via loyalty schemes. 

Get ahead on the Christmas food shop

Christmas starts earlier every year and although we may not like it much, it can save you money. Pick up chocolates and booze throughout November whilst many are discounted, especially if you have store loyalty cards. You will save money and spread the cost, just don’t eat and drink them all before Santa arrives! And don’t forget to make the most of freezer space, stock up on offers that are available now. Reduced foods can be frozen on the day of purchase and enjoyed at a later date.  

Swap turkey for chicken

Yes, turkey is traditional but you don’t have to be. A whole chicken is far cheaper than a turkey but equally as delicious. And if you have a bigger family and need more meat, 2 or 3 whole chickens is still cheaper! And there’s less chance of anyone complaining about dry meat. Or ditch traditional Christmas dinner altogether and have your favourite meal anyway - who says you have to do what everyone else is doing?! 

Cut back on Christmas cards

Receiving a Christmas card is always lovely, but it is an additional expense. As well as buying the cards, the cost of stamps has shot up over recent years. Why not make a small donation to a charity instead? Family and friends will understand when they find out you have supported a good cause. And if a donation isn’t an option, send an e-card to let loved ones know you are thinking of them. 

Host parties and gatherings for less

Whether it’s Christmas Day or parties over the festive season you can still be a super host by asking everyone to bring a plate of food. Make it fun and have a theme or cuisine in mind. Likewise, ask your guests to bring a bottle. Why not have a cocktail party where everyone brings the ingredients -It will reduce the cost whilst having a wonderful time together. 

Regifting is still gifting

From books you have loved to ornaments that aren’t your thing - they make great gifts for someone else. There always seems to be a negative stigma attached to regifitng, and there shouldn’t be! It saves money and prevents perfect items from going to landfills too. Toys are a perfect regifted gift, especially those that only left the packaging briefly - they could be another child's dream pressie this Christmas.

This simple-to-follow but effective way of gift-buying saves money, time and your sanity! If possible, start the 7 Christmas Gift Rule with younger children, it can easily become a tradition. When it comes to writing Christmas lists, stick to the same template every year. Older children can make the most of the rules too, understanding that there’s more to Christmas than gifting is a good mindset for the future. 

What are the 7 rules?

It might be that you make the rules, but here are my suggestions that are easy to implement. Keep them as they are or tweak them to suit your family. And if 7 gifts are too many, pick 4 or 5 of your favourites.  

What do they need?

Start thinking about something the kids need. A new winter coat, trainers, school supplies, and so on. This could be absolutely anything that would be of practical benefit.  

What do they want?

This is something that they really want, within reason! No matter what their age, kids usually suggest several things they would like for Christmas, whether they are telling Santa or you. Choose one item that is within your budget. And if everything on the list is over budget, ask them to suggest smaller or cheaper items!  

Fun times!

Consider what activity your child would love to do. Maybe it’s some tickets to the theatre or cinema? Would they enjoy mini golf? Or even a trip to the beach with a picnic. Whatever you decide, include a fun activity and make some memories. Pop your tickets or a card detailing what you have planned in an envelope, and leave it under the tree for the reveal on Christmas Day. 

Include something to wear

This is a great opportunity to replace those much-loved PJs that are far too small, treat them to that hoodie they have had their eye on or pick up a new pair of cosy socks or gloves for Winter. Remember that you don’t need to spend a fortune, you can save money by shopping on preloved clothing apps or buying ex-display footwear too.  

Include something to read

Whether it’s a book by their favourite author, a comic that they love,  or a voucher for a digital download - a reading gift is a must.
